Horses are tripped until they go lame and then they're killed or sent to slaughter. What a nice thing to do to a horse that probably was raised as somebody's pet until the owner got bored and sent it to auction. The rope burns and other injuries done in tripping are quite a sight. Broken necks are not unknown. But, tripping the back legs is a little less barbaric than tripping the front feet.
