  • Great intro to how to choose a bluray player, but I still think you should consider a region free player (both DVD and Bluray region free). Especially if you stays in Europe and wants prompt access to USA releases. Google "modchip bluray" and you find forum and retailers that are all about region free.

  • @rickie5150 No DVD will die soon

  • Comment removed

  • @rickie5150 you do realize that you can use Blu-ray disc in many other ways, you don't necessarily need to buy a movie on Blu-ray you can use it to store movies, music, pictures and other things. And with 25 to 50 gigs of memory its better than having a cheap shit flash drive, you don't need to have jaw dropping visual effects to enjoy a movie you can still watch you're DVD's and with a Blu-ray player they will be upscaled and will look better.

  • @jvmc08 Resorting to profanity and an insult says something about where you are psychologically. Especially while making public proclamations. I had no idea how emotionally attached to Blu-ray you are. That's unfortunate. If only you could see that your preachin to the choir.

  • @rickie5150 BUT I will never recommend a stand alone Blu-ray player, get a PS3, more horsepower/entertainment for you're money Girl

  • Comment removed

  • @rickie5150 you are very ignorant, you called me a laddie first boy, and and now you are trying to change the conversation because you can't defend your argument, just because you can't afford the best things does not mean you should bash on others, you shouldn't use you're 10 years old computer too often it might burn out

  • Comment removed

  • @rickie5150 you do realise I never said anything about the definition of laddie(even though in my part of the world we never hardly use that word) and I called you a girl, just as a one up insult, and still you don't defend you're argument, YOU FAIL. Technology today is outdated very quickly but it never means its obsolete....and thats the bottom Line

  • @jvmc08 The definition of obsolete is outdated>no longer current. A pertinent piece of information that you are having trouble grasping, is that Blu-ray is only one medium, for delivering HD entertainment. You may not want to understand right now and you missed the whole VHS, BETA, LaserDisc era. There was a ton of information to be learned about the release of technology to the consumer. And please don't try to inform me that HD was not available then. Capisce ??

  • Comment removed

  • @rickie5150 AND you keep on insulting me, instead of persuading me, real nice of you. Outdated means a new product has been released, so its no longer the "New Thing". Obsolete means its no longer used AT ALL or at least not in the mainstream. No two words ever mean exactly the same thing, if they did we wouldn't need/use them. And you are comparing the VHS, BETA, LaserDisc era to this era? Ha, you got man I thought you were serious for a second there....

  • @rickie5150 One thing is to buy a product like PS3/Blu-ray that will probably last 10+ years, another thing is to buy an Apple product that will be replace in one year. Oh and remember that Blu-ray player can at least be updated unlike the VHS/DVD, example of that is the 3D which to me seems to be a work in progress. And many companies have spoken on not releasing any major products because of price and demand AND of course econ. Oh and at least my writing has character unlike yours

  • Comment removed

  • @rickie5150 After your insults and lack of persuasion, my question is, are you British? When you were a child and you got into a fight, instead of fighting back you would just insult the guy and you would just keep getting hit(an analogy of your arguments). With your intolerable ignorance I wouldn't be surprised if you had an Obama sticker on your bumper. The type of people like you don't deserve to live! I'm still blooming while you're rotting away boy. You gone get now yah hear

  • Comment removed

  • @rickie5150 Damn! You are the exact definition of a Liberal! Next time when you get into an argument boyscout, argue about the TOPIC, don't just insult them like an idiot. There is a fine line between criticism and just plain insults. Writing is not a science but an Art form, which you do not realize or understand. Just because you are 40+ years old, doesn't mean you ever fully matured or maybe you're just a senile person. Don't ever argue with people your not very good at it, take care boy

  • @jvmc08 You are as amusing as a puppy fart !! Please help me understand your oh so full of character writing self... Do you have a job ? Did you earn the money to pay for your PS3 ? Do you live at home ? Are you really over 7,665 days old ? Are you a minority ? What was your last completed grade of schooling ? Are you an illegal immigrant ? Are you homosexual ? You never clarified. Have you looked up the definition of all the words you don't know ? Will you let intelligence be your guide ? Hmm?

  • @jvmc08 What on Earth, which is not near your part of the world, possessed you to become so upset about the "blu-ray will die soon" warning ? Your reply "No DVD will die soon". Blu-ray is a DVD.. dare I say Doofus? The way you write "You do realize" denotes that I already understand what you are saying. If you are questioning me, add a question mark. That's grade school mate.. and I'm not even British... who could imagine ?.. not you. I could drill you with intellect till the end of time. BUSY ?

  • @jvmc08 Allow me to demonstrate the art of a question...Have you ever heard of a Holographic Versatile Disc ? This is a near future medium for much more than just HD technology. Please take note on how I did not use your phrase of "you do realize". Have you ever heard of Apple TV ? Are you aware that Flash drive technology, which you hate, is gaining momentum ? Heard of USB 3.0 ? Are you aware that you are un-aware ? You even walked a path, I asked you to avoid. Stupid ? Y/N ? Are You Sure ???

  • Comment removed

  • @rickie5150 I must of gotten to you because you gave me 4 reply's in a row, Amazing! Maybe you finally woken up? BUT probably not. I am very tired of your insolence, I have wasted my time with you long enough. I suggest you do something productive with your life, maybe you should take up knitting. You cannot understand the simplest problem if not followed by an answer. You should go waste your time with people who care about you, NOT ME! Goodbye Rickie! Don't take things so seriously.

  • @rickie5150 hahahahaha, hey next thing on your list of douchebaggery(urban definition) should be watching natural disaster videos and preaching about how the world will end soon...

  • Look at the quality of that horse.

  • I don't need a blue ray player, I don't even need a DVD player! I rip all that into the computer and stream it over my network!

  • Philips BDP-7300 any good?

  • Thank God! This was in my recommended box, and I thought it was a Howcast... Which don't help at all... This helped, Thanks!

  • I have a receiver... Is it better to connect the blu ray player to the receiver and the receiver to the Tv or to connect the BD player directly to the Tv =) ?`?

  • @weakkitten

The answer really depends on the receiver you have, and the TV you have. Number of inputs on each plays a role in this, as does the HDMI series (1.3, 1.4, etc). Are you trying to do 3D? There's a lot more to consider.

You should check out the articles and videos on the Crutchfield website, go there and click on "Learn" and prepare to be pummeled with info. And if that's not enough, you can call us or email and we'll help you personally.

  • @systematic91

Hi, .. but if you are a bluray fanatics you should have a regionfree, modified bluray player. It gives you full control over your player, not the manufacturer.

Just Google for.. ”bluray modchip”... and you find plenty of solutions.

  • jeez u guys look like rabbits.

  • can you use a blu ray player as your audio/video receiver?

  • @64bitgfx

Definitely cannot use a Blu-ray player as your A/V receiver. They are two completely different components that work together along with your TV to give you home theater.

There are some home theater packages that have the Blu-ray player and the receiver all in one component. These systems usually come with speakers as well. But most Blu-ray players are standalone components.

    Hope that helps,

    CrutchfieldTV

    800 315 0030

  • so there are some blu ray players with AV receivers in them? can u give me some brands?

  • @64bitgfx

Interested in a complete home theater system that has Blu-ray built-in? Sony, Samsung and others make these systems. On The Crutchfield website we call them "Surround Sound Systems." If you go to that section of the website you'll find all the systems that have the Blu-ray player included or built-in to the main component of the system.

    Hope that helps,

  • can any blu ray do 3D?

  • @Mewzyc

You must purchase a 3D Blu-ray player such as the Sony BDP-S470, BDP-S570, or the Samsung BD-C6900 to get 3D from a disc. You can find all of these on the Crutchfield website.

    I hope that helps Mewzyc.

  • @crutchfieldtv Does sony's ps3 able to play blu ray in 3D?

  • @Mewzyc

I Googled "PS3 3D" and found several articles about 3D gaming on the PS3. They also mention that through a firmware upgrade later this year you'll be able to do 3D movies as well.

  • best blu ray is ps3

  • 2 Questions PLEASE ANSWER? so all blu ray players and 1080 hd none is bettter or less just the features they have? and im confused about the hdmi cable, how do you know when to use it?????

  • @fmxbeast102

We have Blu-ray players from $130 to $5,000, and the difference is more than just features. You get incredible build quality and componentry when you spend more. We have 30 models to choose from, and we can help you pick out the right one, just call, email or chat with us.

You use HDMI cables when you have a source with HDMI outputs (Blu-ray, HD cable, XBOX, etc) and a TV with HDMI inputs and with most new sound systems.

    Hope that helps

    800 315 0030

  • @crutchfieldtv okay well i understand better but i still have a question about what you said about the more it costs the better. i got a model NB500MG1F. is that a good model for good quality. and will it work its best on a tv such as a 46"in flat screen. more specifically the model. 46"in sanyo DP46840

  • @fmxbeast102

You are asking me to tell you if very inexpensive products that we don't sell are going to perform well. I'm sorry, but i really can't say. I know I wouldn't be happy with the DVD player or the TV you mentioned.

If you spend more you'll have products that last, better picture quality, better sound quality, and more features. And the more you spend, the better it all gets.

I hope that clears it up, if you would like more help, just call us, seriously.

    800 315 0030

  • @crutchfieldtv alright i fully understand. so 1.1 isn't good. it does nothing??

  • @fmxbeast102

HDMI 1.1 is very outdated. We're now up to HDMI 1.4a as the latest and greatest. If you aren't trying to do 3D TV then you still need at least HDMI 1.3 to get the best sound and picture.

    Hope that helps,

  • blue ray players should be at 4320p instead of cheap old 1080p.

4320p is super high vision hdtv its 10 times better than 1080p, why are they making us watch 1080p when their are better solutions.

  • 4320p?..not in uk shops!

  • It gonna take a while to look at that resolution, but they are working on it. in 2 Years your about to watch 2160p (and maybe in 6 4320p)

  • the other day i took my christmas money to comet and started talking to member of staff about blu ray and he showed me several players and showed me the pic quality and there was absolutle no difference so i went for the cheapest and i am absolutely stunned by the quality, when buying there really is no difference your paying for the make( brand name), but the staff in comet tryed to persuade me otherwise and they tryed to sell me a £80 hdmi cable but i bought a £9 and it is perfect.

  • is it possible to connect a bluray player to the wii useing ethernet cable and a adaptor to get the netflix useing the wii's wireless signal to the router

  • cOuchsl0uch,

It is not possible to get wireless connectivity for your Blu-ray thru your Wii.

Samsung makes a Wi-Fi link adapter for their Blu-rays for this purpose, and other some Blu-ray's have Wi-Fi built in. Otherwise you'll have to connect using Ethernet straight to your Blu-ray.

    I hope that helps,

  • you know netflix is coming to wii like this year right?

  • My home theater system with built in DVD player died. Now I want a regular receiver with no player to hook a blue ray player to using my existing 5.1 speakers. Whats a cheaper receiver that can kick out decent base? Help I only have 2 HDMI ports on my 1080p HDTV and they are already took up by my cable box and a PS3 game system! Can gold premium component cables provide HDMI quality picture? If not how could I get around this?

  • putz esse é o novo disc player que legal!

  • i have a vaio that play blue ray

  • wat does decoding actually do

  • oo7nightfire,

Great question. The 7.1 channels of digital surround sound information is "encoded" onto the disc when they make the movie. All that information has to be decoded, either by a surround sound receiver or by the Blu-ray player.

If you have an older receiver that can't handle the new formats, you might need a Blu-ray player that has it's own decoded. If you have a new receiver, you don't need a built in decoder on the Blu-ray.

    I hope that helps,

  • My blu-ray disc is the correct region and my playstation 3 is telling me that i need an internet update to be able to play the disc but i dont have the internet where i am so i will have to buy an official blu-ray player instead so i can watch the latest blu-ray discs, but i read that the blu-ray players sometimes also need internet updates but i dont mind that as long as it doesnt prevent me watching the films i buy.

  • elvishprincess321, you might be able to contact sony and have them send you a disc that has that update on it. perhaps a friend with the net could burn one for you?

I've done this with my xbox 360 when I didn't have the net. Good luck.

  • elvish,

I think we've found the answer. I'll post the short version here, and send you a message with the long version.

Managed Copy allows you to make a copy of a Blu-ray movie. These discs will need Internet.

No Blu-ray player currently has this capability, games often include firmware updates.

You may want to see about borrowing or renting a recently released game to see if that updates the systems firmware and fixes the problem.

    CrutchfieldTV,

  • For the last two years i have been using my playstation 3 to play my blu-ray discs but hadnt bought any discs in a while and then i just got a new one recently but my playstation 3 refuses to play it and says i need an internet update for my console but i dont have the internet in the flat where i stay,i would like to get a blu-ray player but will it also need internet updates which i cant get and would it also be able to play my old dvds as well???

  • Hi elvishprincess,

We've never heard of a Blu-ray player simply refusing to play a Blu-ray discs regular content with no Internet access.

What are the chances the region on the disc is not the correct region for the player you are using?

I hope it's something as simple as that, sorry you are having trouble.

  • Yummy girl.. and a great video

  • i just got a 42 in vizio tv 120hz 1080p what would be a good blu ray player to get i own alot of dvds also right now the sound on my tv is the only bad thing about it so i hooked it up to my rca 5 disk changer and it sounds way better could i use that for a blu ray player also

  • jtmoney,

TV manufacturers know that most people are going to use some level of a sound system with their new TVs to take advantage of the high definition sound that goes hand in hand with the new high definition picture quality. That's why most TV's sound is so minimal.

To answer your question, You'll need an actual "Blu-ray" player to play Blu-ray discs.

If you call an Advisor at Crutchfield, we can help you get the perfect player for your needs.

  • what about loading times of a blue ray disc ? , i heard that some players have a loading time of 3 minutes before the movie starts ??? is that true ?

I am definitely looking for a blue ray player for this christmas :-) but the choice in price and the remaining unanswered questions are still bugging my brains. Somehow this keeps me waiting for the ideal player .

  • Hello Satan,

I can certainly understand a little trepidation regarding Blu-ray. It does seem like the bugs are still getting worked out. That's not stopping people from enjoying Blu-ray movies right now though.

The current crop of Blu-ray players can be upgraded with firmware updates (and many have) to fix confirmed bugs.

I strongly suggest you check out the reviews of each player posted on Crutchfield. Very helpful.

  • PS3 is my blu ray player :)

  • PLZ HELP--if u get the ps3 do u need to but anything extra in order to play blu ray discs? or do u just pop open the tray and put in a blu ray disc and it will recognize it

  • no ps3 plays blu ray movies right out the box.You dont need any extra accessories to play them.I did buy the ps3 blu ray remote but thats just an optional accessorie you can just use the ps3 controller to operate dvds and blu rays

  • Unless you have HDTV with HDMI blueray will play on normal tv forget about it!

  • Panasonic DMP-BD 35, nuff said. Best stand alone Player with all the essential features.

  • Sony = Root Kits = DRM = HMDI

Wait on buying a Blue ray, because another new format is about to be released in a year.

  • And that format might be? Blu-ray is soon to be the defacto standard now that HD-DVD lost the race.

  • its actually HDMI high definition multimedia interface....-.

  • Just buy a PS3 and you are very fine!!

  • what are the green blue and red wires for????

  • Legend,

Your TV has to refresh at 120hz to get the benefit of 120hz. There is no source (Blu-Ray or otherwise) that "sends" 120hz, it's simply something your TV does, or doesn't do.

Might be time for a new TV?

  • my tv is a 720p, 24p True Cinema playback, what is that? according to this bdp-s350 it has it. will my tv be compatible?

  • ha! 0:53-0:55

  • What is the best Blu-Ray player? I'm not talking about price, sound, internet or any of that crap. Picture quality is the most important and the main reason. I have a 60 Inch Sony Projection HDTV 1080P and an M1000 HDMI cord. My HDTV cannot do 120HZ, which sucks, but which Blu-Ray Player can do this or can display the best picture? I know not all Blu-Ray Players are the same.

  • Hello Legend,

Great question. Picture quality is really the main attraction of Blu-ray, and youve got a decent TV, so I can see why youd care so much about getting great picture. The answer is not so simple though.

All Blu-ray players at Crutchfield can do 1080p, but not all are created equal. Youll want to look for better construction, better video Digital to Analog converters, and better processors....

  • ...Based on my research, the more you spend, the better the player gets. For example, the Sony BDP-S5000ES has the fastest D-A converter, solid construction, and a host of other technologies that should give you the best picture possible.

For a specific-to-you recommendation, you can chat with one of our expert advisors. (888)955-6000.

  • Okay thanks, but can any Blu-Ray Player display 120HZ if my HDTV can't????

  • If money is of little concern, Yamaha will be releasing their flagship , 45lb, BRP. That will probably be the best..But Sony, Marantz , and denon offer ultra high end BRP. IMO, the Panny 55 is the best for 400.

  • Thanks, but what is BRP? The only problem is that my HDTV can't display 120HZ and I want to know there's any Blu-Ray Player out there that can do that.

  • do you need a reciever for a blu ray player to work????

  • No mate. A receiver will give you the best sound, but it has nothing to do with the picture. You will see great picture (HD TV ONLY), but the sound will come from the normal tv speakers.

  • i bought the SONY DAVHDX475 BRAVIA home theatre system. do you know how i can make it so that i can play my xbox 360 with surround sound? i have a HDTV.

  • I don't own a XBOX 360. Does it have a Digital Optical or Digital Coaxial connection?

  • If it's a 5.1 system with optical connection, you just need a optical cable connected to your 360.

  • is that true PS3 is the best Blu-ray Player?

  • yes it is.

The PS3 loads Blu-Ray Discs faster than any other Blu-Ray Player. The quality is outstanding, and it is very good at upscaling DVDs. It supports home theater sound through HDMI as well. It is also Firmware Upgradeable through Wireless Internet.

It is the best player to go for.

  • if you have a Home Theater system with Six Analog Audio Outputs you would want to go with the Panasonic DMP-BD55 Blu-Ray Player. If you don't have Six Analog Audio Outputs then HDMI will still sound excellent, and The PS3 will work excellent.

  • My dads Panasonic 58" Plasma has a Optical Cable Input, does this mean i can get 7.1 Surround Sound Without using a Reaciver?

    Does a HDMI cable send 7.1Surround ??

  • no Optical Cables will only give you DVD sound, Dolby Digital 5.1 EX, and DTS ES 6.1, Even to get those sound formats you need a receiver.

HDMI will send a 7.1 mix, however it is better use a Blu-Ray Disc Player that has the 7 Analog Audio Outputs. Try to find a receiver that has this feature and the Panasonic DMP-BD55 Blu-Ray Player offers the 7 Analog Audio Inputs.

  • No HDTV supports 5.1 to 7.1. You need a receiver. Yes, HDMI accepts 7.1.

  • I have the Bose home theatre and is connected to my projector. My question is If I buy a blu ray player and connected to my Bose receiver will the image and sound be better?

I usually watch movies on my projector and the image is not bad, but I was wondering if the blu ray will make the images in the projector much better.

  • Blu-ray Playes a 1080p res. 24fps and supports dolby TrueHD & DTS-HD and blu-ray will actualy upscale your standrd dvd's 480i to 1080p, but is the projector have a native 1080p? aka [1920x1080 Full HD] and does your reciever have HDMI inputs version 1.3a supports the latest lossless decoding digital sounds? if you answer yes to all! then yes your DVD's when played through the blu-ray disc will be amazing.

  • If you want to get the best sound for your home theater use the Six Analog Audio Outputs, by doing that you will stll get beautiful High Definition, through your Amp, and it will sound better than HDMI.

If you buy a Blu-Ray Player, connect it to the HDTV through HDMI, then if the Player does not have Six Analog Audio Outputs then use HDMI and it will still sound good.

  • there is no difference between 720p & 1080p, The only way you will see a difference with 1080p is if your HDTV is over 60 inches, and if you sit close to it. I've compared them and I could not tell the difference.

720p is also better than 1080i.

  • Riddler

You make good points. The larger the screen, the more important 1080P is. You can see the difference on TV's as small as 46".

The source, HDMI cable, and the particular TV can all greatly affect how impressive 1080P appears.

Cheap HDMI cables won't get the job done, and many TV's that have a native resolution other than 1080P will downcovert the signal to 1080i or 720P

1080i is better for slow-moving programs with lots of close-ups, and 720P is better for fast motion

  • Why won't cheap HDMI cables get the job done. One of your mods said he couldn't tell the difference between low cost HDMI and high cost HDMI. Over long runs, yes quality matters, but professional grade HDMI cables are between 20.00 and up depending on the length. And with a digital connection, you either get the picture or you don't..Theres no degration like analog cables.

  • Hi kbi,

I've actually seen what a weak HDMI signal can look like. It's not either on or off. When the signal is week, you'll see white sparkly specs on the screen, like twinkling stars. It's like little bits of digital information isn't making it to the TV. This can be a problem if the HDMI run is long, and the cable isn't up to the challenge.

The longer the run, the better the cable used should be. I have recommended $30-$40 1 and 2 meter cables to many of our customers without a problem

  • 20 Dollar HDMI Cables work excellent.

All cables will offer the same quality.

A cheap cable will be identical in quality when compared to a expensive cable.

Expensive Cables last longer. That is the big difference.
