Kiran More drops a simple catch from behind the stumps of Graham Gooch. Gooch would go on and make 333 runs. it was most costly drop catch in the history of test cricket 313 RUNS
if only england had such a dominant batsman today. I know we have pietersen, but gooch could destroy any bowling on any pitch. Goochie is with the boys in south africa at the moment, and the way that the 3rd test is going he surely has a chance to play in the final test!!!!
i remember wk More dropped a sitter while he was 36....297 runs i guess is the biggest cost a fielder has paid for such mistake...
& who said Prabhakar is a legend...thats like saying Mark Ealham or Ian Harvey or Andrew Hall are legends....he was promising but never was damn good & later screwed it up with fixing matches with Azharuddin.
Great driving. BTW I've never seen sobody so unextactic in passing 100 and its multiples. When he got 300, he looked like most people look when they get 50.
A pleasure to see. Others got runs in that game, but Gooch stamped his authority all over it. He was a master batsmen in supreme form. His career after age 30 was incredible, I take my hat off!
Can someone PLEASE put on youtube Roger harper's run out of Gooch where he fields Gooch's drive off his own bowling switches hands and throws down the stumps-can't remember if it was a Test match though.
Remember this was the world record as he added 123 in the second innings to his 333 for a 456 aggregate. The next best match total is B. Laras 400* v England.
Even so the most entertaining part of the game was Kapil Dev facing E Hemmings with 24 needed to avoid the follow on and he the over went 0,0,6,6,6,6!!!! Wow.
Graham Gooch is my all-time favourite batsman. What a cricketing hero. Never gets the praise he should do from the media. England's all-time leading Test run-scorer.
Remember watching this as he did it. Gooch was a class act, dominant and intimidating for any bowler to face. Used to love watching him and Boycott open during the early days against Holding/Marshall/Garner, etc. Can you imagine any current England player doing that. Also shown briefly was another great hitter of the ball - Robin Smith - shame his England career didnt blossom (probably his face didnt fit). Thanks for posting and thanks for all that entertainment Goochie.
Gooch was a true great player...terrific endurance as well. His legacy to the England side was to start the process of improving the overall fitness level of players.
Thank you for this video. I am an Indian fan and if I recollect, the keeper (More?) had dropped Goochie earlier in his innings. Anyways, the older I get, the more I am learning to appreciate great feats, be those of my team's or anyone else's. This is so cool watching a good game of cricket. Thanks again!
I was there! I was fortunate enough to be invited (for once in my life) to a brilliant corporate freebie including lunch with Jim Laker and Godfrey "Godders" Evans, who was on great form. But of course the highlight was Graham Gooch's innings. What a day, and thanks for letting me relive it on YouTube.
Thank you for pointing out my embarrassing mistake. Godders was definitely there: I was sitting next but one to him and he was showing us the bits of chipped bone under the skin in his fingers ("I could have them removed but they bring back memories"). But who on earth is the person I wrongly remember as being Jim Laker? He was up the other end of the table so I didn't actually talk with him. If it comes to me, I'll let you know. Well spotted: it's best that I knew!
I've just remembered who it was. It was the Chairman of Selectors at the time: Ted Dexter. These cricketers were playing when I was a small child and they tend to blend into each other!
Ahhh, Lord Ted himself - a real critic of Gooch. I hope I didn't come across as unpleasant with my comment, coincidentally I'd just been reading about Jim Laker!
Gooch was my sporting hero...I remember this series so well, having just finished my A levels, so I had plenty of time on my hands to watch!
A truely great performance. Watched it on TV. Every one of the 456 runs!

Gooch is miles better than that idiot KP, this innings was against a poor attack but what he did in 1991 against the Windies KP could only dream off.

superbb, if I made an all time England XI I think Gooch would be no.1. Later I'd obviously pick Hutton and Laker. But as a No.1 Gooch is the man.

Current English cricketers sucks or other nations getting better?????
I think both.....!
Well most of the current English players are not pure English.
Ravi Bopara, Monty Panesar, Sajid Mahmood, Adil Rashid, Dimitri Mascarenhas (British-Asians).
Kevin Pieterson, Andrew Strauss, Matt Prior, Jonathan Trott (South Africans)
Owais Shah (Pakistani)
Eoin Morgan (Irish).
So sometimes I wonder what does it mean to represent your own country means...?????!!!

Its because Gooch is from the old school of sportsmen who just got on with it.
Nowadays we have to endure all sorts of crazy celebrations in all sports.
Its a different world today sadly.

against that bowling? Kapil, Prabhakar and Shastri are legends of Indian cricket..and Hirwani isnt far off..

Since when has Prabhakar been a 'legend' of Indian cricket?
Indian cricket has a few stars, mate and no, Manoj Prabhakar isn't one of them.

it was the bicentenial match at Lord's in 1987, I think Gooch got seventy odd and a hundred.

Agree, Smithy was perhaps one of the worst treated players out of the 90's, yet commanded respect from every country he played against.
The same can't be said of Hick or Ramps who were treated with kid gloves.
