  • Maybe we should start a vlogger's union and set up collective negotiations with the mass media? Naah... I get maybe 100 views for every taxi vlog :)

  • Very salient points you raised there John, but I have visited online newspapers and many times I have been directed to political videos emanating from YT. It's just a pity none of the editors of these newspapers fail to run with the stories.

  • The general public at large seems to still think those of us getting on cam here are just lip syncing to Numa Numa or showing random unimportant objects in our homes.

It will take one of the major news media outlets paying attention to this and achieving some gain by doing so before others notice and follow suit.

    That's just a guess.

  • Upon serious introspection (hardly!) I've realized that I tend to gravitate towards the personal vlogs as well. So many things political are my passion yet I've tried to stay away from politics for over 2 years :)

  • Agreed. The instant feedback, interaction and varied topics on this site are one of the reasons I have not owned a television set since 2006. Not many among us could have imagined such a thing a decade ago and we are living in exciting times indeed. One vlog from some users here is many times more interesting than anything on regular TV to me.

These days if I watch anything it's a film on DVD ... on the computer. Awesome comment :)

  • I would prefer our contribution were more in the altruistic nature not unlike the hieroglyphics on Egyptian Temples adrift in shifting dunes...

  • You're a romantic and poet and I love ya for it brother. That comment right there sounds like it belongs in stone. Well said my friend.

  • I hope your holiday season is one you might mark all others by...

  • Likewise good friend. I think we all have it within us to change it all around if need be at every passing moment and create not only banner years, but banner days, every day. Thanks Pappy!

  • That is what I am trying to accomplish with the GoodSamaritanNetwork channel... its off to a slow start but I will remain optimistic...

  • Oh wow ... I'm there like a bear!

  • I enjoy the written alot, although since coming to You Tube, i enjoy a good vlog now and then. I think for me its the removal of 'face factor'. I can read and interpret the words on my own, a bit easier this way. Of course the subject matter is another factor. For example, i kept looking at you ring here, and the zipper on the coat being too high up, so my focus on the material was a bit askewed. :D Cant wait to see the Nixontationals too!

  • Much like why I prefer a good book instead of the film adaptation.

The ring stood out? I think I noticed that myself when watching back. Yes everyone has their attention somewhere else but that's a good thing. Sometimes I leave props around me in a very cryptic way and no one notices lol. Backfires almost every time ;)

Love the phrase Nixontationals! Might steal it.

  • I'm right with you on this one John & it's something i've mentioned before. I find it very frustrating that vloggers are not taken as seriously as bloggers.

Somebody mentioned that vloggers are often insiders & i think that's true & that way they can hide their idendity. Whereas a vlogger is putting themselves "out there" for all to see.

One concern i have is that TV channels etc only use those "ireport" things, as cheap programming. They also use them to show that they're "hip" & up to date.

  • These days it seems that TV wants to be the Internet & YouTube wants to be the TV.

    It's a mixed up world.

Vloggers of the world unite :)

  • The whole concept of bloggers being insiders is something that makes incredible sense. I should have known you'd have vlogged about something like this!

It is kind of transparent how things like iReport are obvious attempts at being "in" and trying (weakly) to steal some of the limelight of YouTube. Amazing observations Andy, thank you!

  • I LIKE the dark John Reagan! Looking forward to more Reagan tapes.

A friend of mine works on a current affairs show called The Listening Post that airs on Al Jazeera and focuses on different forms of media. They do something that sounds very similar to this i-report whereby they ask people around the world to send them video clips of themselves talking about the next show's specific issue. They sometimes trawl YT for likely candidates.

    Maybe it's starting to happen.

    Cheers!

  • Fantastic observation regarding Al Jazeera. Logically it could only be a matter of time from a business sense to them as they can get new that they would otherwise not get from 'free' sources like us.

Darkness shall be wrought upon the YouTubezz! Loving your support Novanine. Your comments are always enlightening and so appreciated.

  • I think bloggers might be more usefull to mainstream media because they are faceless and can steal and distort the truth. they can't do that with vloggers. There would probably be lawsuits and hard to distort the truth when there is a video out there to prove it. I guess I'm just not a fan of mainstream media. I do believe one day vloggers will have a place and it will be interesting to see how that pans out.

  • oh John, it starts when you open up your mouth babes. Keep talking someone is listening. I look forward to Nixon-esque tapes. I hope it's juicy. ps People only want to hear people like Perez Hilton and his gossip bullshit they don't want actually vloggers with opinions on anything but keep talking.

  • I couldn't agree more. Sensationalism and Perez Hilton crap is what grabs the media.

In my private life, if ever do watch TV type stuff, I tend to watch (besides damn good films) the deep conversation shows late at night something along the style of Charlie Rose. Mostly those with a bit of humor. Boring to many, but fascinating to me.

Your words about someone listening, is encouragement indeed. You rock Furz! I'm ready to start watching the Furnis and the Nixon tapes are too hot to handle ;)

  • I have to rewatch this I quit paying attn to what you were saying while waiting for you to drop your ash..

  • Don't you know by now that I spray a little glue at the end tip of the cigarette so it won't fall on camera?

If the ash falls, it's like having your pants drop in public. It's a no no.

  • You both have a serous case of ADD, I am so glad I got OCD in the group ya'll couldn't handle it.

    gotta go to work

  • what he said :)

  • What I said to him ;)

  • More on the way from, John! Yippie...:-)

  • Amazon now allows users to upload video reviews of their products. It is happening, just amazingly slow. A friend of mine was watching a news report and told me the reporter was holding the camera and eventually turned the it himself, just like us vloggers do. Things like reality tv or moc documentaries like "The Office" are setting this vlogging, "talking head" thing to become a reality. Soon. We are SO in the infancy of vlogging and I find that extremely exciting! :)

  • I think it's coming but slowly. Perhaps more serious fans naturally are attracted to text? I watch several serious vloggers and they just don't have large audiences. But I sub so that I never miss their stuff. Will those people gain greater audiences in time? Do YTers only care about the Chris Crockers and Michael Buckley's of the world? Let's face it, Nalts gets thousands of views yet g12er a very small amount, yet the value of the content is with g12er and others like that. Great topic John!

  • I think it is a good idea for news sites to open up discussions on current affairs to vloggers, and maybe collate clips to give a comprehensive opinion report. I suppose it's easier to quote text than it is to edit video though. And not everyone comes across well visually, a blogger can hide behind their words whereas a vlogger has to have the visual/charismatic side to be marketable.

  • It's easier to give clear well thought out arguments and opinions in text than it is to speak to a camera. I know my brain goes to mush every time I turn a camera on, but some do have that vlogging talent and manage to stay coherent as speakers. I'm better at the writing!

Our individual opinions don't matter to the media, they just want samples of the general opinions that fit with the angle they want to give ;)

    I love your Nixon character!

  • I think iReport is a step in the right direction. You'll see many different types of people from many age groups.

You're spot on: Bloggers can (& sometimes must when reporting about a dictatorial government) hide behind their words where exposure could be life threatening.

Charisma is important if hired by a network, but I'm hoping that everyday Joe's & Jill's will have their voices heard too :)

You're brilliant at writing! Sorry that you have to deal with the 'real' Nixon all the time! x

  • News media.. does not want to deal too much with video bloggers. It makes their jobs unnecessary. They can use blogs with their own reporters. but vloggers would compete with the reporters.

  • We gotta be good for something bro ;)

  • we are good for many things. hell we are the future my friend. Hell I wanna be on one of your series. I dont care witch one. .. call me a bad youtuber cause I spend more time on vloggerheads ,,lol

  • You're always good in my book and that's no joke. When I first saw you vlog for the first time in earnest on VH, I saw a combination of wit, humor and ease in front of the camera that I don't have. I really don't have shit going on.

We are the future man. And I know exactly which clip of you to put in my VICE vlog. Let's shock the viewers lol

  • did you see the new Nixon tapes released?

    I saw them on Hardball

  • Yeah! When I uploaded this I put a link to them on the side John. Good shit :)

  • The internet has actually begun replacing some avenues, but i have to wonder if this is always for the good. i certainly have doubts in some cases and do not necessarily think this trend is healthy. The internet is simply ONE avenue.

And something i see here is that there are many small fish trying to feed their desire(egos) to become big fish. Why must we feel this sense of great individual importance? i just wonder...

New technologies have brought great changes in our society. Good ones?

  • Many good changes, some bad, many dangerous. But so many w/ good opportunity. Because of social networking sites one can have exposure to find a job for example. Because of bloggers and vloggers one can now have a window into lives and events that would have been unthinkable as recent as 1995.

Egos will always need stroking for some. But those that have an agenda without any malevolence are those I admire, thus I enjoy always looking towards the future. And yes I agree 100% it's only 1 avenue.

  • I think it's just a slow burn thing. We have a portal to upload videos to contribute to the BBC and to newspaper web sites here in the UK. In many TV shows we hear YouTube mentionned in the same way that people have taken to saying "I'll Google it". Amazon also has an upload your video review feature. I think all these things add value, but maybe they're becoming so everyday that people don't get excited about them. Looking forward to 'Miami Vice' Cheers, Lesley

  • What you describe there is what CNN seems to be doing more and more. Great to hear that YouTube is becoming a household word in the UK as well. There are even webcams with the YouTube logo on them recently.

What is unfortunately not becoming very everyday common is the worldwide impact that a Vlogger could have, such as exposing a regime that violates human rights as has been seen with many Bloggers.

Cheers! Lesley it is great to see your comment again :)

  • vloggers will achieve this status if "insiders" or journalists start using the platform.

The reason imho that bloggers are given the respect cause some of them are hidden media or politicians which vlogging cannot provide the cover for.

  • Superb perspective Ran. One which I had never looked at before.

I do know of some in the blogging medium that truly are not journalists but the deeper one looks, your comment makes incredible sense as to why the current high profile and influential blogging status was achieved. Thank you so very much.

  • Never heard of iReport. But I'm not surprised. We have already iPhones, iPods and stuff... iOne iDay iWill iEverything iWritten iLike iThis.

    iHahaha

    iTom

  • I've always admired your iSongs ;)

  • How you doing on this cold Miami morning. I agree with you about those I reports. It would be cool to have that here. If you want to create a group count me in

  • Much colder up in the north where I'm currently staying these days. Too cold for my linking.

I'm grateful at your support on this and truly hope to find a way to see how vloggers can be as influential in the world as are bloggers. I'd like to find where we are missing the mark.

  • I guess it's about time I do a vid lol. It's been awhile.

Yesterday morning down here in Naples is was 40 degrees. geez
