You know...

Every time you've ever fought Kraken and won, you did just enough damage to him, and not one point over. And his next attack would've wiped out your entire party in one hit, I assure you.

The reason you were able to win is because at some point the slippers did 1 damage to him, and that chipped in towards your survival.

Maybe you didn't notice, though...

Not necessarily. Nintendo just published both games. The DKC music was composed largely by Rare, whereas the music in Earthbound came from Ape. Even though they sound similar, they weren't composed by the same people.
