Because the year off will erode an already waning fanbase, and sponsership money will be even harder to come by. Commissioner Baker screwed the pooch when he tried to make the AFL the "fifth major league" instead of leaving it as a niche sport. Now, there will likely be no league, although I'm sure some of the AFL franchises will play on in AF2. It's just a shame.
