  • i LOVED the movie

  • 38 people don't have good taste!

  • Secretariat the greatest of all time!!

  • There will never be another horse like Secretariat,he holds the track records of all three triple crown races and his record at the Belmont may very well stand forever!

  • @Irishfanism yes, prob so.... my favorite moment in sports, all kinds.... poor Sham, any other year....RIP Big Red

  • Do you give the horse his strength or clothe his neck with a flowing mane?

Do you make him leap like a locust, striking terror with his proud snorting?

He paws fiercely, rejoicing in his strength, & charges into the fray.

He laughs at fear, afraid of nothing; he does not shy away from the sword.

The quiver rattles against his side, along with the flashing spear & lance.

In frenzied excitement he eats up the ground; he cannot stand still when the trumpet sounds!

  • I love the movie so much! And now that I saw this I'm truly amazed! Secretariat is now my favorite movie of all times!!!!!

  • You couldn't have done a better job with this this video. Amazing. Thank you.

  • The greatest racehorse that ever lived. There will never be another.

  • @ghanimajade Absolutely! I am so glad I saw this on TV when it happened. I've never forgotten that moment.

  • The music with this is perfect! ♥

  • Little known fact is that Secretariat kept surging even after the finish line all the way past the next 1/4 pole. He would have been awesome to watch in the Breeder's Cup Marathon. ♥ As Penny Tweedy said of this race, "He just felt terrific! He ran because he was loving it." Bill Nack said he had never seen a horse so fit when he saw him in the paddock before the race. I'm sad for Sham. His trainer and jockey ruined that great horse in this race. :(

  • @kwgrid while surging and then pulling up at end of the Belmont Stakes, he BROKE the record for 1 5/8 mi set by Swaps. Nack points that out also in the biography. I RECOMMENDTHAT ALL YOU YOUNGSTERS GETTING TO KNOW THIS HORSE READ Bill Nack's biography of Secretariat, The Making of a Champion. The description of this race is 8, yes 8 ! pages long, anticipating, tension filled, quoting a CBS executive in the crowd turning to a colleague and yelling... "he's gonna win BIG, Herb !"

  • just watched the movie and loved every-bit of it but the real race is more inspiring loved the soundtrack too.

  • A horse like Secretariat comes around every 50 years, sometimes longer.

"Tremendous Machine" perfect call, it would be humbling to watch that race, you would know that you witnessed a horse that is very special.

Secretariat gave every ounce of his amazing strength, I wouldn't be surprised if Secretariat had the same massive heart that Phar Lap had.

  • @Parag0n Phar Lap's heart was weighed at 14 pounds. Sham's was weighed at 18 pounds. The same pathologist did the necropsy on both Sham and Secretariat. While Secretariat's heart wasn't weighed, the pathologist estimated the weight of his heart at 22 pounds. This is why he was a "Tremendous Machine" - he had the "x-factor" in spades. An amazing athelete.

  • @RcDellena Sham and Secretariat had the same maternal grandsire, the wonderful Princequillo, brought over to U.S. fm Ireland in 1940 by ship thru rough seas infested with German U-boats. You shld all google Princequillo and select reines de course

  • I'd like to know who the Zeros are that disliked this. They wouldn't know greatness if it smacked them in the face. This video is the most inspirational that I've ever seen. Thank you.

  • I wonder how it felt for Ron Turcotte...the moment he let the reins go and felt that big engine kick in and REALLY take off. I envy him for that; it must have been the sensation of a lifetime.

  • @leaferne I thought the same thing. I envy him that ride. :)

  • Saw the movie for the first time the other evening, Thouroughly enjoyed it, if you love horses or horse racing you will love this movie. Another great thing about the movie it is a true story and it follows Secretariat's racing life closely.

  • OMG what an awesome video! Music from Rudy is so appropriate, because they kept telling Penny she couldn't do it just like they told Rudy.

This horse just continues to take my breath away every time I see him! There will never be another. So lucky to have been alive to experience the joy of Secretariat winning those races. He was truly the people's horse!

  • Excellent video.

  • woooooouuuuuu it is incredible and wonderful i like the animals but the horses i believe that they are creaturas wonderful and we most give thanks God by them, and the honor of them to have had here.

  • Just an Incredible video put together here. Thumbs waayyy up!

  • Secretariat, words can not express this Belmont Triple Crown Winner. This great horse has wings like a dove and Big Red flew away from the other horses as if the angels of GOD pick him up and carried him across the finish line. When you have a horse that has been cleaned up prayed up with his trainers you can not lose. This Beloved horse Big Red.... Secretariat. can do all things through CHRIST who strengthen us.

  • They think his heart weighed almost 22 lbs. A normal horses heart weighs 7-8 lbs. He wasn't on steroids or anything he could run like that because of his heart What a beautiful horse!!!!

  • @Mumpys By Leigh Nichol under the direction of the Indiana horseman's coalition quote:According to an article by Dr. Barbara

Forney, a veterinarian practitioner and author, there is no research evidence that supports

anabolic steroids use as a ‘performance enhancing drug.’

    Race Horse

    Cont.

  • @Mumpys Research has shown that anabolic steroids have done little to improve both humans and horses. “There’s a tendency to look for an external agent as a magic bullet, a magic pill that’s

going to help us perform better. The truth is there isn’t any,” states Dr. Laskowski from the

Mayo Clinic.End of quote. You right my good man but if he did it would not made any difference anyway. Maybe these Secretariat haters will shut up now knowing the truth but I doubt it.

  • Wonderful horse - just spectacular!! A performance I doubt we'll ever see again.

The announcer Chick Anderson's race call was perfect for this magnificient race.

  • @SuckBigHorseDick

yea so was seabiscuit and so are all the athletes who won or win with heart and not chemical enhancement... Jimmy the Geek should just shut his beak.

  • @GoFuckaPregnantPig Well since Jimmy the Greek said.... Do you want to know why Secretariat was able to run like that? Autopsy revealed a heart twice as big as normal for a horse his size....thats TWICE, not 1/8, 1/4 but 2 times. Either the horse was born with an overly large system capable of producing amazing output, or something caused this condition, or it grew to endure the immense strain, probably a bit of all 3. Cocaine? Steroids? Thats what everybody says when something great happens.

  • Love the music. My horse (My Moms Sugar Halo) is Secretariat's great great grandson but he doesnt have the speed for it so he is now my hunter/jumpers horse. I LOVE Sirius and proud his great great grandfather's blood runs through his veins. :)

  • This is by far the best video clip of the race! So much clearer than all the rest. Thank you so much!!! ♥

  • @GoFuckaPregnantPig and he only snapped the record by 1.8? sounds like he gave him the cheap shit.

  • @SuckBigHorseDick Jimmy the Greek didn't know shit.

  • make them go around the track 1 or 2 more times he may have laped them.

  • Not only did Secretariat set the record for the fastest time at the Kentucky Derby (1:59 2/5), each of his quarter-mile splits were faster than the preceding one, which means he was still accelerating at the end of the race. His split times were: 25 1/5, 24, 23 4/5, 23 2/5, and 23.

In the Belmont Stakes, both Secretariat's winning margin (31 lengths) and his winning time (2:24) still stand after 37 years.

    Simply untouchable.

  • @lantzn ...a lot of people don't know and can't appreciate the 'still accelerating' aspect...truly jaw-dropping and, in the actual definition of the word, awesome

  • @lantzn Secretariat's 1 1/4 time at the Belmont was 1:59 flat. He broke his Derby record while running the Belmont. It will never happen again.

  • I am not a sports person..at all. I could not tell you what team is from what city or who won the world series or super bowl. But I've have a few moments when I have witnessed jaw dropping amazing . Michael Jordan or Walter Payton would make you stop in disbelief at what you saw. I didn't even know what I saw, but you get a chill!! I just bought the movie to fill my 5 for 20 Blockbuster special. Heard of Secretariat but a horse was a horse...until him. I had to see for real! Now I understand!

  • music is too much. the announcer is all we need.

  • Watching the movie, Loved this vid thanks for posting!

  • HE IS DRIVING A KIA SORENTO TODAY!!!

  • Man poor Sham. Hey may have won the triple crown any other year.

  • The greatest racehorse of all time,he still holds the track records in all three triple crown races,no horse before of since will ever touch him!!!

  • @Irishfanism

    or ever...

  • @LORDTREVORTON Thank you for pointing that out..

  • WOW!!YOU ARE A FUCKING THIEF HACK!!!THIS AINT YOUR VIDEO!!AND YOU KNOW EXACTLY WHO THE ORIGINAL BELONGS TOO!!!YOU ARE AN INSECURE FUCK WHO STEALS VIDEOS TO MAKE THEM THEIR OWN!!WHAT A PIECE OF SHIT YOU ARE!!HOPEFULLY YOU BREAK YOUR LEG,AND THEN GET SHOT!!

  • @myjoeyd shut your hole you useless waste of oxygen

  • Nice to see the original race after watching the movie, but the music wasn't really necessary for the clip.

  • AND ALL OF GOD'S WONDERFUL CREATURES~~~REST IN PEACE SECRETARIAT!! ALONG WITH RUFFIAN AND ALL GOD'S WONDERFUL CREATURES!!

  • I have no doubt that if Forrest Gump had seen this race he would have been yelling run Secretariat... run

  • Words cannot express the grace and power of this majestic animal! I am old enough to have witnessed his greatness when I was a young man and I never grow tired of watching him. I am too young to have seen the great Man-O-War race but, if he and Secretariat were somehow able to race today, my money would be on Big Red!

  • Makes me so much appreciate the splendor and grandeur of these marvelous creatures. May we all protect and take care of our animal friends. What a marvelous and moving race. Secretariat, RIP.

  • I love this horse(: ♥

  • Secretariat is a-MA-zing! Great movie, too! :D

  • I could watch this forever! Totally amazing!

  • the music u chose was amazing, this video brought tears to my eyes. God Bless<3

  • i knew this music was from rudy! great job! honestly, i am not a fan of horse racing and i never have been.. but ever since i heard about secretariat i have been extremely interested and i could watch videos of this horse all day... what an amazing animal and a great story behind it. secretariat was a super horse, just awesome. when i watch these races and see this horse it brings tears to my eyes and idk why! lol i guess i just have a loit of respect for the horse after learning about it

  • I'm astounded by how the music matches almost exactly with the action in this race. It's like it was written for it! Goosebumps.

  • Man I can never see that enough. I was ten years old when he won the triple crown and it's been etched on my brain ever since.

  • man i love secarteriet the best horse the world will EVER see

    rip secrateriet

  • Just finished watching the movie...and just had to watch the real event...and amazing horse!

Now I know why Aunt Bliss kept that photgraph so many years...she took the picture at Belmont...

  • this is the most amazing video ever,to seee how a house could do a complete blow out, and the movie did a grat job at showing what happened. this is the best video of what really happened :D

  • Does anyone know what music is playing in the background.

  • @sabliko1

    "The Final Game" Jerry Goldsmith

  • @jawillo Thank you!

  • @sabliko1 It's from the movie RUDY...

  • they had to pan the camera... that says it all.... Greatest moment in sports... bar none

  • Amazing horse. Per the owner, the horse understood what a race was and planned his own races. He was also a ham. He got fed up in the Preakness with the slow pace and blew by the field in an unbelievable burst, but before he went past Ecole Etage he stared him in the eye. In this race, Secretariat was finally in great shape after the tooth abscess and made a statement about what greatness is. And poor Sham. A better horse than all the triple crown winners before 1973, relegated to obscurity

  • That is the most beautiful horse ive ever seen!

  • Perfect choice of music for this video, from one of my favorite movies, RUDY. Amazing horse!

  • Wow, what a amazing horse - a special gift! He was and is simply the best - ever.

Loved the video of not only the race, but of Secretariat running in his pasture and the clip of his workout. What a horse!! Thank you for putting this together.

  • Just watched the movie and surprised how much I liked the film....then watched the REAL races on youtube and am even more impressed with how the movie portrayed it.

  • Greatest of all time.

  • the best

  • I watched the movie last night and loved it! It was so heartwarming to see a horse go above and beyond anyones expectations and take on this race all by himself! It was funny to see on the movie everyones face expressions, lol.. big red just surprised everyone.

  • i guess thats what RED does when he gets a good start...

  • 34 people lost money on this race.......

  • @ lonesomepete: my sentiments exactly!!!!

  • SECRETARIAT WAS A LEGEND!!!!!!!!! RIP BIG RED

  • curse you people who disliked this

  • i want to be like penny own a race horse and do the triple crown i love horses and when i saw this movie i wanted a race horse

  • I was 21 when i witnessed this race....I'll never witness again....most amazing horse with a personality and will......just a wonderful gift to everyone who knew him.....

  • Secretariat is the Michael Schumacher of Horses!

  • Hey colbeyp Sham 4th!!!! No way on my list or any other I've ever seen!! Please,Horses like Risen Star,Easy Goer,Point Given, are better just to name a few, never mind the all time greats such as Man o War, Citation,Whiliway,Spectacular Bid,ect...

  • I'm not saying Forego was better as a 3 year old, but he did take on all comers ats a older horse, always spotting them pounds galore(se his Malboro, Forego 137 lbs. Honest Pleasure 119) Both great horses. Both in my all time top ten,yes I have Secretariat ranked ahead of him.But i have Forego ahead of the likes of Cigar,John Henry, and Kelso.A great Handicap horse.

  • the reason he was "super horse" was because his heart was three times bigger than the average horse. they found this out when he died at the age of 19 and they cut him open to find out what made him run so fast. bigger heart means more blood and oxygen pumped to the muscles.

  • that horse is like a torpedo its like hes slowly picking up speed and....bam hes in front of sham.he is the ultimate horse of all time.and you dont have to ask me to know it

  • The most amazing thing about this race? he ran each 1/8 faster than the previous 1/8! The best ever? Don't know, but definitly the best 3 year old ever.By the way,in Secretariats Derby win,a pretty good horse by the name of Forego ran 4th!

  • @artsnletters77

The 1973 Kentucky Derby has 3 of the Top-Ten ranked horses of all-time.

  • @colbeyp Ok I know Forego & Secretariat,Whose the third?

  • @artsnletters77 Sham is the third one, ranked 4th

  • @artsnletters77 Your right my good man but you failed to mention this was the last race Forego would ever run against him. His owners said he would never race Secretariat again. They did not want their horse looking out the rear-end of him anymore in fear he would have ruined Forego. Guess you can't blame them.

  • Only if Mike Smith let Zenyatta lose from the start then she probably beat everyone by 20 lenghts.

  • @nbsbb2009 NOT!!!

  • @nbsbb2009 thats how zenyatta runs.. she always closes like a freight train..

  • Two of his records, i forget which two, wheter its Belmont, Kentucky Derby, or Preakness that have yet to be beat!! And I really doubt if they ever will be beat. This was one fast horse and deserving of the Triple Crown. I think in Zenyatta's younger years if someone had worked with her before she got out of the age requirements, that Zenyatta could have done a lot more damage than what she did. Keep in mind this was an old horse that was running this race the other day, not a 3 or 4 year old!!

  • @abbey2772 Secretariat's Preakness has been matched twice, but never beaten. The thing the Sec detractors NEVER think of, is Sec never ran more than 85 to 90% of his capacity. He was still accelerating in Derby as each quarter was faster than previous; in Preakness Turcotte said he cld've won by 10 lengths but kept thinking ... Belmont. In the Belmont Sec ran a continuous, even, rhythmic 12 furlongs w/o ANY urging. He cld've bettered the 2:24 flat.

  • he has wing like eagles.. and runs like its nothing... the ground flys beneath his hooves.. and the power is his. He is one tremendous horse. Amazing. I watch this, and im left breathless. i believe that Secretariat lives on in heaven, and gallops on forever.

  • Thanks so much for putting this music to this once in a lifetime race. I am happy to say that all my children have seen Secretariat when he was alive at Claiborne Farm and each child had their picture taken with Secretariat. Secretariat's handler was Clay Arnold every time I visited there, and he is in all the pictures of Secretariat and my children.

  • very nice video indeed

  • Untouchable. Every once in a while an athlete comes along who redefines what is possible. This 4 minute clip captures the significance of this event 1000 times better than the movie.

  • How I loved this horse! I cried the day he died. Just saw the movie "secretariat", Too much on "people" and not enough "Horse" . Would've liked more actual footage included in the film. Nothing compares to seeing the real thing! But, oh I loved that horse! Still get chills watching the original broadcast of the Belmont. Brings back memories of being a horse-crazy 11-year-old in love with Red, jumping and screaming in front of the TV! ( and re-enacting it with my Breyer horses many-a-time)!

  • how did he die?

  • I'm so proud to say ron is my cousin and he is a legen, love you ron xoxo

  • Well put together.

    Beautiful video.

  • I too remember watching this as it happened, and screaming along with the rest of the world: "Go Secretariat", and he did. What a horse, what a horse, what a horse!

  • Great video. Great music. Phenomenal athlete. A true legend. I remember feeling sad the day it was reported that he was put down....

  • Loved the music mixed in with the announcer's play by play of the race. Secretariat is the most amazing horse to have ever lived! Just watching him run and winning by the lengths that he did is just amazing and always brings tears to my eyes. He was a big, beautiful horse.

  • oh wow, what a beast.

  • I saw the movie twice and will have to see it again. Brilliant horse.

  • when secetariat deid ppl found out that he was such an awesome athlet cuz his heart was twice the size of a regular hores's heart. which is y he ate so much to keep up his inergy.

  • For fair play, let's have the poor horses ride the owners and jockeys down the track!

  • That was beautiful, thank you~

  • I HAVE TEARS IN MY EYES EVERYTIME I WATCH THIS VIDEO--A RECORD TIME NEVER TO BE BROKEN-AN UNBELIEVEABLE ATHLETIC FEAT !! WE ALL MISS

    YOU---RIP

  • It is just as incredible watching this now as it was then. My father bet he would fade...I told him he would win it with at least a 5 length win. I knew he was a special creature...thanks for sharing this

  • This is my horses' great great grandfather :D

  • ESPN2 is re-running Secretariat - Sports Century on Friday, October 8th at 5:30 PM if anyone wants to see it or record it forever.

  • thanks for sharing this...I saw the movie last night (sneak peek showing at local theater) and it is PHENOMENAL! This is a story that should have been told many years ago. Disney does the movie like only Disney can, I recommend anyone who remembers this great and very smart athlete to see it, and even if you don't remember because you are too young, you will be so glad you saw how history was made in this exciting movie/tribute to the greatest racehorse ever!

  • "Secretariat is ALL ALONE!"......exactly, my friend

  • ALI WAS DEAD WRONG, HE'S NUMBER 2. SECRETARIAT WAS NUMBER 1.

  • Secretariat will never die.

  • ok this vid made me cry

and if this vid did, i can't wait until i go to the movies to see it

    i can't wait

and he was such a gorgeous horse

  • I have watched this countless times, thank you so much for putting this amazing music to it. It is perfect.....and I will watch a couintless number of times as well. You did good!

  • I have loved this horse for years..

  • The movie released October 8th. Can't wait.

  • Secretariat was a most AWESOME horse of all Time,,,Ron Turcotte from Drummond NB my neighbor was very lucky to be able to have been his Rider,,Ron still talks about the times,,Amazing Horse and will be missed by me and many

see you on the other side Secretariat,,God Bless

  • Secretariat was a most AWESOME horse of all Time,,,Ron Turcotte from Drummond NB my neighbor was very lucky to be able to have been his Rider,,Ron still talks about the times,,Amazing Horse

  • What happened in this race was pure greatness. Imagine setting an unbreakable record in the grueling third race of the triple crown, under a hand ride unchallenged by anyone, while the jockey takes his eyes off the road and looks back wondering where the other horses are. It took 3 horses pushing themselves to the limit to set the mark he devastated that day by 2 and 3/5th seconds. If he was pushed he might have run in 2:23. But no one could push the greatest horse ever on his greatest run.

  • Here's another quote by Seth Hancock from that 1998 story. The wtory essentially said we'll never see another Secretariat.

Hancock said: ''You want to know who Secretariat is in human terms? Just imagine the greatest athlete in the world. The greatest. Now make him six feet three, the perfect height. Make him intelligent and real kind. And on top of that, make him the best-looking guy ever to come down the pike. He was all those things as a horse. He's a legend.''

  • @2813uf Seth Hancock's remarks were spoken to Bill Nack. It's in "Pure Heart" in Secretariat, The Making of A Champion I think day before he was put down at about 11:30 a.m. Nack visited Claiborne spur of moment when he was in area and found out he was suffering seriously fm laminitis. He was there to interview one of old timers and while leaning on a fence I think, waiting, he finally saw Secretariat standing w/a groom, eating fm pail which was odd. Nack wondered why, noticed S was thin.

  • I finally found some stories on Sec in the NT Times. Here's an excerpt from one in 1998.

Ron Turcotte, Secretariat's jockey, has often told how Hollie Hughes, the trainer of the 1916 Derby winner, George Smith, was still around in 1973 just before the Belmont.

''Son, you're riding the greatest horse that ever looked through a bridle,'' Hughes told Turcotte. ''I have seen them all, including Man o' War. Secretariat is the best I've ever seen. You will win the Belmont. Don't fall off.''

  • A special horse that was given a special gift from a higher power. This horse would not have been beaten that day by any previous Triple Crown winner. This will include Man o War. What a remarkable animal that we will all cherish to the end of our time. We will not see another horse like. You were beautiful Big Red and I know that you are winning races in the next world. God Bless and RIP.

  • He was an amazing horse that we will probably never see one like him again. He was supernatural or in other words a freak. He was braught into this world to race and God he did not let us down. Still get goose bumps when I see this race. I will never forget the words of the announcer "He is moving like a tremendous machine". If Citation and Man o War could have been placed into that race Big Red would have given them the same treatment that he gave Sham. Thanks Big Red for the memories and RIP.

  • @stephen39217 its shuch a goood viedio that it made me emotional and best horse i have ever seen good bless his soul :D

  • Love the very last part of the clip with all four legs off of the ground...Pegasus!

  • the best Big Red video I have watched!

  • i wish they would put this music in the new movie, especially for the belmont scene

  • secretariat is related to my horses i love him makes me so sad

  • Surely I can't be the only one who cries everytime they watch this video....it always leaves me speechless.

  • i saw secretariat in all three races of the triple crown in 1973. it is true there are no words in any language to express what we all felt when we watched The Super Secretariat run away from every other horse in the race. You literally cannot see another horse on the screen as he pulled away so many lengths to victory and the first triple crown win in my lifetime. I still get excited, jump up and down and scream and cry when I watch him run the last race of the triple crown. cahz

  • "It's almost a match race..." For a moment, it does seem like a match race between Secretariat and Sham, but then, only seconds later, you realize that it isn't a match race at all, that in fact, there's one horse, and only one horse, in this race: Secretariat.

  • Why couldn't Sham keep pace with him?

  • @watergawbard he got destroyed. he gave it his all and couldn't do it any longer. he never raced again. they claim he had a small fracture in his leg but I think he just lost it when he got beat this bad. turcotte never even used his whip. the horse did all this on his own.

  • *sigh* We'll never see anything like this again. No horse is as special as Big Red.

  • My horses great, great grandfather :) The most amazing horse I know about.

  • "...HE IS MOVING LIKE A TREMENDOUS MACHINE!'... Right there my heart LEAPS,I lose my breath and my eyes tear up! What a call! What a race! WHAT A HORSE! I'm not a big horse racing fan, but DAMNNNN!

  • @lonesomepete Yeah Pete, gets me every time, esp with this Rudy music .... But also because he was an incredible horse, so much personality, and I'm biased being from Virginia....

  • @irish89055 I think we have a lot in common.

  • He was so big he had trouble fitting in the gate. At autopsy his heart weighed 22 lbs.

  • A kingdom for Secretariat!

  • greatest moment in sports..... bar none.

  • @irish89055 .... Amen !!!!

  • Just checked Man o' War's credientials. He was beyond marvelous. The very best of the first half of that century. We just didn't get a chance to see him.

I still believe Secretariat was the the best we will ever see. My heart is with him.

  • Man o' War must have been something beyond the greatest, as he beat Secretariat (#2) for Horse of the Century. I'm dismayed. Who judged this award? In my mind, Secratariat is a horse that we will never see the likes of again. Perfection!!

  • @822d @822d You can see on several Secretariat videos here the story Bill Nack tells (he was on board of judges himself) that one guy put Secretariat 14th on list. Nack said if he had known that at the time, he would have put MOW last just to even it out. It was riduculous. Also you can google secretariat vs. man o' war angelfire. The words jazz nutbush are in the web name. I just tried and it came up first on google page.

  • @bon1042 This was just one panel of 7 that judged them. Hardly a fair judgement by any means. Most all sportswriters & experts that have seen MOW & Secretariat had claimed Secretariat the best. We all know that too don't we??

  • bon1042, I didn't know this information. That puts a whole new perspective on this. I knew Bill Nack LOVED Secretariat, and I knew he was on the panel to pick the Horse of the Century, so I was surprised that Secretariat came in 2nd. Since I don't know much about horse racing, I assumed those picking knew their stuff. I think the person who picked him 14th was definitely out of touch. No way was Sec only the 14th best horse of the century. That's outrageous.

  • @822d My two cents is these "lists" can be subjective and argumentative However knowledgeable these people may be, it can just be their opinions, preferences and yes sometimes their prejudices. That's my OPINION, and I'm a stickin' to it.

  • If you pull up the Preakness on You Tube and time it, you'll see that Sec runs that race in 1:53. Just freeze on the quarter mile and freeze on the finish. The DRF timed him in 1.53.4. The Preakness time with the damaged timer was 1.55 and later changed to 1.54.4. A real injustice as Sec not only won the triple crown but he really owns all three track records till this day.

Also the lightning move he makes on the first turn in the Preakness is the most explosive move in horse racing history.

  • @2813uf DRF had him clocked in 1:53.2 not 1:53.4. His move in the Hopeful race I believe was faster than the one in the Preakness. In that Hopeful race he ran a 22.1 quarter passing them horses. Man 0' War never ever came close to Secretariat's records at any distance. If Big Red was whipped silly like most others coming down the strecth his times would have been much faster & he was most of the time in races coming from last to first going wide into he turns.

  • @rscarbro100 .... and as another poster pointed out.... Secretariat never ran more than 85 to 90% of capacity or ability.

  • @bon1042 That was William Nack quote I believe in one of his books he wrote.

  • When does the clock start for a horse race? I don't know much about the sport, so forgive me if this sounds like a silly question. On this video the horses break the gate around the :23 mark and secretariat finishes at the 2:49 mark. That is 2:26, not 2:24. If they don't start timing them as they break the gate, then when does it start?

  • Comment removed

  • The real Belmont race and time starts at the point where the horses reach the quarter mile post you see just after coming out of the gate. From there until the horses touch the finish line (not cross it) is the time and length of the race. . In the Preakness the clock malfunctioned.
