You'll notice on Google Earth they only developed the EXACT area the strip was on. It is not like they wanted to develop 1000 acres and the strip was a small part of it. I think LI sucks and I think that the missing tracks (westhampton and Bridgeport) discourage people from getting into racing. Am i supposed to build a car on LI and then test it at Atco or Englishtown? Maybe Watkins Glen or Poconos? It is all politcal, just like Islip Macarthur airport, people are complaing about the noise there
@OFFSHOREJOJO It won't make a difference. They were going to build one at Calverton airport but they wouldn't allow it due to "noise". WTF!!!!!!!!! It's a god damn airport! How can they site noise as a valid excuse. Steve Levy just doesn't want a track anywhere on Long Island. End of story.
I got a 57chevy rules shirt there,raced a 67 road runner.Remember woody wood pecker,the line came from here''long island international speedway''not englishtown.
@howcomecattleman yea I grew up there, never paid admission. once inside bought one pit pass and passed it back and forth through fence to 4 friends.....Hey dont for get to visit the goodie booth! lol
You have the best drag vids on youtube. Those shots of the cars on the return lane are fantastic. Ronnie Sox up close in the Cuda and Road Runner and Dick Landy in his Dodge and all the other great shots. Wish it were that way today!
Great Suff. Funny seeing Terry Hedrick with snow on the ground. I saw The Ramchargers break the 7 second barrier at NY National Speedway while it was snowing. I was also there for the Wild Thing Volkswagon wheelie truck crash - that sucked ('68 Summernats). I miss that track.
does this bring back memories! I ran there and all the other tracks on Long Island. Thank You for the great memories. Quarter Mile is the only way to go. Still have my 68 Mustang to keep me going
what a great video brought back tons of memories at these tracks lived near both National speedway in center Moriches, now a retirement park.. still see parts of the track they used as roads, and I lived last up the block from Westhampton both dearly missed
This brought back many memories for me. I raced @ NY National & Westhampton (sometimes the same day) Thanks to the NIMBY'S drag racing only exists on the public roadways of LI. Thats why I moved away!
There are no racing events on LI anymore other then the limited schedule run at Riverhead race way. I lived up the block from the westhampton track and used to race in Bridghampton as well I was president of The Long Island Sports Car Association from 1982-1991
This is great. My dad (Hank Schlosser) raced a 55 chevy (yellow) called Yankee Raider on LI in the 50-60's. If anyone knows him I would love to hear stories.
it's to bad they closed down national now westhampton is gone. i'm real excited to see my 63 ply. ironsides in the film. me and a friend raced it for a short time in the late 60's. WOW!! this film brings back memories!
what a shame that they dont have a track on long island anymore ,that was in islip ,,,,,,,,,,Gruman out east is the perfect spot 4000 foot concreat runway,,,,,,,, and they wonder why we street race around here
Man that video brings back some real memories,my dad used to take me there in the 60s and early 70s to watch and i raced there late 70s,i was just telling a friend about how they used to race 4 cars at a time as this vieo show....wow thats cool
HOLY F*CKING SHIT!! That 67 Camaro @ about 5:20 lauched like a bat out of hell! I have NEVER seen anybody dump the clutch like that and not break anything! That thing sounded like it was spinning tire well past the 1/8 mile mark! Unearthly!
@punkazzgearhead hello the gold 55 chev at 5:17 sec was mine in those years we already had Oldsmobile rears in these 55'S and camaros and there was Henry's Axels

According to the producer of this video, they dubbed in some of the sounds. I guess a lot of these films didn't have sound.
I just ordered the DVD to see if I can catch a glimpse of my father. He started racing at National Speedway in 1969.
