Well the film storyline is loosely based on the science fiction book by phillip k dick called "do androids dream of electric sheep". However, the title of the film is actually from another science fiction book by Alan Nourse called "The Bladerunner" - Ridley Scott bought the rights to use the title Bladerunner, or more precisely Blade Runner (note the space).
