Instead of using them for menial jobs, agriculture & hard labour (like China is doin) if they could be gainfully & productively employed (each making $8-12K/year at least). Also in the rural sectors there is unlimited scope & potential. It is easy to increase income of people frm $80 pm to $160 pm even with basic jobs. And if tht happens, the growth rate will be much higher than 8% & also tht will be truly balanced development.

America got independence on July 4, 1776 while in on 15th August ,1948 , read it again. So, America got independence 213 years back while india 51 years which is 1.5 half century before. Clearly growth of america and technology is very slow. Amazingly there is only 19 years of difference in landing space shuttle on moon both by india and USA. ISRO, indian space research organization lauched space vehicle in just 7.3 years of foundation of project , while USA took 23 years to work upon.

I've seen the movie of the Venus Project ... and it makes no sense. He talks about funny technologies as if they were already existing and working. India has a massive workforce. Instead of using them for menial jobs, agriculture & hard labour (like China is doin) if they could be gainfully & productively employed (each making $8-12K/year at least). Also in the rural sectors there is unlimited scope & potential. It is easy to increase income of people frm $80 pm to $160 pm even with basic jobs. And if tht happens, the growth rate will be much higher than 8% & also tht will be truly balanced development.

cities are the power engines of growth.because its here most of our economic activity is concentrated especially manufacturing and the service sector.and these power houses are grossly inadequate of the infrastructure both civic and physical.And that is the reason nilekani calls them as ideas in progress. that does not mean neglect rural areas...it is rural areas that run these power hoses thru the required raw materials...starting the chain from the most basic material FOOD.

America got independence on July 4, 1776 while in on 15th August ,1948 , read it again. So, America got independence 213 years back while india 51 years which is 1.5 half century before. Clearly growth of america and technology is very slow. Amazingly there is only 19 years of difference in landing space shuttle on moon both by india and USA. ISRO, indian space research organization lauched space vehicle in just 7.3 years of foundation of project , while USA took 23 years to work upon.

When he said 'we' he meant the Indian mindset... He probably means that Indian policy makers thought of a high population as a liability which needs to be taken care of.... but now, as he pointed out, since India now has (and will have for a few decades) a young population in an aging world, if they are properly trained and given opportunities, they aren't a liability anymore and can tremendously contribute to technological and economic growth.

commodity means an item that is traded or is involved in business (pretty much any product you see for sale is a commodity). Same thing goes with labor. People sell themselves for money (whether it be their skills, abilities or in some cases, their bodies) for money. Nothing wrong with commodity until people are treated the same way (which is unethical) .

the term human capital makes perfect sense. A nation can have everything, but if its citizens don't have knowledge to use the resources, that country will be the poorest. WE live in knowledge economy, and human capital is one of the country's biggest asset. That is y americans give good salaries to indians.... as indians immigrate, America strengthens their human capital.
Simple funda of immigration....acquire human capital from knowledge based countries.

I have heard amazing accounts of how farmers are using mobile phones to improvise communication networks for finding buyers of their products. This seems quite a lot more efficient to me than trekking to market and hunting for the person who has what you want or wants what you have. Not to mention that they are able to contact many people and thus get a better price for their goods. Long live technology!
