Its funny how in the 50's they couldn't act or create the feel of a 1912 period (only 40 years ago) yet in 1997 (over 100 years ago! ) we can create a time capsule with immaculate 1912 acting! God i hate olden day movie acting!
This version has so many well-done elements! The mounting danger expressed in the music (who wrote that magnificent bit?), the shots of the prow of the ship cutting so relentlessly against the water towards its ghastly demise, the juxtaposition of disaster below, while the "beautiful people" danced and dined unawares. Remarkable, really. Superb depiction of the inherent drama with very few words, at least in this fascinating clip. Thank you for this!
Curious thing when Captain Smith is asked about 'making a record crossing' on the North Atlantic... "The Titanic is certain to pick up a blue ribbon..." R.M.S. Titanic was not attempting to set any speed record... her speed was increased most likely at the influential urging of White Star Line President, J. Bruce Ismay. First Officer William Murdoch did not order Robert Hitchens, the quartermaster, to 'helm to port' until after the ship was manoevered 'hard-a-starboard'.
@Titan52berg - Even ANTR played on her speed record. It was of its time, not historcally accurate. I dont believe for one moment that Titanic's slight increase in speed had anything to do with Ismay, it was Smith trying to put the ship "past" danger after the early reports of ice warnings.
Interesting, albeit highly innaccurate. This clip depicts immediate panic when, in fact, the realization of the severity of the damage was somewhat more delayed, particularly by those in the "upper classes". I find this significant more as a cultural artifact than as a historical depiction.
This drama is no differant than such other early features on Titanic such as the 1953 movie 'Titanic'. Although a iconic movie now in its own right, the film is very inaccurate.
I'm Seeing POSSIBLE "Deleted" Iceberg Footage From The 1953 Film TITANIC, As Well As Recycled Sets Form The Same Film. And A TON And I do Mean A TON Of Scrap Filler Footage From the 1943 German Propaganda Film TITANIC.
I Must Say This Is An Incredible Piece Of Cinema I Never Knew Existed.... The Editing Is Done Very Nicely And It isnt That Choppy.
Who Knows, Maybe One Of These Days We'll Glimpse "SAVED FROM THE TITANIC" Circa 1912, This Turned Up So Why Not That? :D
It's highly unlikely since the film negatives for "Saved from the Titanic" were destroyed in a fire in 1914. I wouldn't be suprised if a copy of SFTT was found in someone's collection or in a film vault somewhere. Heck I've heard all of the lost clips for "Metropolis" have been located, so there maybe a slim chance for a film print to be located. All that's left of the film are a few photographs from the film.
I'm surprised this wasn't mentioned in the Titanic documentary, "Beyond Titanic", which explored how the famous liner shaped our pop culture through movies and novels for example. Unless at the time it was made, they were not aware of this rare footage, but it was the documentary where I first heard about Raise the Titanic.
Count of think of it, the documentary also didn't mention S.O.S. Titanic, the Voyager episode that had the deleted footage from RTT, and even Gone of the Wind Producer David "O" Selznick's attempt to make his own Titanic movie in the late1930's, which never got off the ground.
Though in its defense, it only explored Titanic media up to 1998, which at that time, James Cameron's Titanic was still sailing to the top of the box.
It was probably because if the rarity of the show. I only came upon the film reel by accident many years ago. I have not seen this episode mentioned anywhere else, in any other media or publication. Not yet, anyway.
I don't blame you, there is possibly tons of Titanic related media that has yet to surface (no pun intended). At least you're the first to bring this to our attention. Looking forward to the next part whenever its ready.
A lot of the films footage comes from the 1943 German version of Titanic . Some external shots of the ship model , the iceberg sequence and some crowd , dance and engine room scenes are taken from the movie , with English dubbing .

What was Molly trying to save as she stuffed it in her clothing?
GuyverFan95 2 years ago
She was putting jewellery and what appeared to be a flask of alchohol into her clothing.
