  • does the hard drive only need to be plugged in while im using itunes?Or all the time? (i have a macbook pro)

  • Please respond: I have around 30,000 songs on a external hard drive. when i added them to the itunes library, at the bottom of the itunes main screen it showed 16,232 total songs. It seems that these missing songs are mp3's and they don't have such things like title, tags, artist. Is there a way that i could fix these songs automatically, because you can imagine how long it would take to do it manually. When i take 1 of these missing songs and try to add it to my library nothing happens.

  • this has all changed by Itunes... It's easier now and theres no need for manual copying.

  • you sound like Charlie Sheen.. #WINNING!

  • WHEN YOU DO THIS DOES IT GO ON BOTH GO ON ITUNES AND STAYS IN THE wd

  • THEN HOW DO U GET TO THE WD TO THE ITUNES THEN ON THE IPOD

  • With windows, can i just change Itunes media folder location?

Because my c:\ is only used for installing programs, whereas i store media on a separate drive.

    Thanks.

  • I WOULD LIKE THIS VID 100 TIMES IF I COULD!! THAT COOL TRICK AT THE END HOLDING THE ALT KEY. AWESOME

  • the holding the "option" key trick did it. Thanks a million.

  • quick question, every tutorial says "plug in", can you just do it wirelessly? I mean, my external hard drive is always on and plugged into my airport extreme. Great Vid!

  • It works!

    You rock :)

  • very useful but they are always tutorials for mac, and barely anyone uses them

  • @tom1980uk You are completely incorrect - though a Majority of the computer market is PC - Apple came in with a 7 - 10 % control of the PC market, so 1 out of every 10 people is a mac - you are an idiot.

  • @NathanSchiele eat a dick. u loser. that was a great video thanks mate

  • You mentioned that you need to keep your external hard drive plugged in at all times. Are you talking about keeping it plugged into the power source at all times or the computer at all times? What happens if the power goes out??

  • Very usefull vid thx alot ! :) rated 5*

  • it will ask you if you want to transfer the files from your ipod to your library, the library will change, not the ipod, i did it myself

  • as soon as i plug it in, it starts synchrinizing and im afraid it will wipe it, your sure it will work?

  • yes, i was scared, too, but it worked

  • ok, im trusting you, hope your right

  • good luck :-)

  • THanks ive looking for this video for a while help alot me personally im just making a copy to my external instead of cut and paste im COPY and paste thanks

  • I got a 1tb for $50 AUS

  • i just bought a 1TB at best buy for $99

  • Could I have part of my library on my macbook and part and the rest on the external hard drive?

  • they ripped u off, i got a 1tb from best buy for 125 bucks11

  • Walmart, $109.00

  • thanks! im gonna try this on the macbook!

  • can you delete Itunes library on Computer once you moved it to the external?

  • yes

  • @sampw002 yes

  • How do you convert m4a files to mp3's??

  • took delivery of my mac mini on monday and was wondering how to do this, thanks to you my library is safe on my 1TB external!

  • why do you only put those three folders on the external?

  • Front Row is iTunes in a tux .... Any tips on how to redirect iPhoto to an external?

  • use alias.

  • .... and only the 'iTunes Music' folder found in Home>Music> Trashing anything else with foul things up ....

  • Mike, its all good. Your tutorial did it. It did 2 things actually. Initially I went the alias route to point Front Row to a 1TB external. I got movies but no covers, no music just covers, no photo slides just covers, no podcasts just covers and with iTunes still hogging my internal. I reversed everything I did for FR and only pointed iTunes to the external and FR followed suit with everything intact. End result. My internal is 360G lighter after trashing the iTunes Music folder... cheers

  • Mike, thanks but on iTunes 8, Consolidating library is under the File menu (File>Library>Consolidate library) and not under Advanced ... Cheers

  • Mike, In iTunes 8, 'Consolidate library' is in File and not the Advanced menu. File>Library >Consolidate library. My Library is consolidating as I write with fingers crossed. Cheers

  • 1 question, I did this to free up hard drive space on my mac but my macs internal hard drive is still loaded? After the consolidation all media added is strictly going to the external drive, but is there any way I can free up what's currently on the internal hard drive since a copy already exists on my external?

  • Okay, now it doesn't work again with my most recent library. What the hell is wrong? Why can't iTunes recognize my music in my library? The library itself shows all the songs, but none of them play unless I manually go navigate to find the original file. Holy crap this sucks.

  • I just uploaded an old iTunes Library with a lot less songs and iTunes played them all fine... Now I know that something is wrong with the iTunes Library, but what? I guess I will try uploading most recent library again to see if it can fix itself. Please work!

  • I recently moved my iTunes folder around in my external HD and now iTunes makes me find the music file for every song. I told iTunes where my iTunes music folder was after I moved it, and I have no idea what to do. I have not run into a problem until now. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • I have been doing this for a while now and it has worked out fine. Except I noticed that you made one little mistake in your explanation. You have to leave every folder/file in your internal HD. You can only move the iTunes Music folder to the HD and it should work fine... Anyways what I am trying to figure out is why my iTunes can no longer recognize any of my songs.

  • What a great vid>! Thanks>!!!

  • Finaly SOme REal Help!!!!! ThankZ Alot

  • Final a guy who knows what they're talking about! I've been looking all over for a way to get my iTunes library to recognize my External HD. This show did. Thanks.

  • your second way does not save hd space though,

i would recommend getting a wireless ext hd or plug your ext hd's into a base station.

this way your laptop is clean and you can access the itunes library from any mac

  • Awesome Screencast Michael! Thanks so much, you make it quite simple to follow. Who needs the Genius Bar when we have Michael and The T4 Show:)?!

  • Way to go Mike! Great Job
