I think people are missing the point with the 'leapfrog'/'jump' solutions, the point of this story is that they're being so headstrong over something as ridiculous as 'walking directly North/South'. They shouldn't need a solution that will keep them set in their ways, they should realise how trivial their argument is and reach an agreement.

As an adult I see it as: Dr Seuss just wrote these skits so you would think about a solution and maybe see the err of our own ways. There is much deeper meanings to all of his works. Not just entertainment. We are all equals and deserve to stand with pride, but allow others to do the same. COMPROMISE is not a weakness. Just ask couples who have been married for 50 years!!
