You actually got me motivated with this Martin repaire videos to fix my old Levin acoustic guitar! Dont like the price of the right tools though.. I bet a silver spoon and some sweet rage would work aswell though... and some duct tape.. and a wood recycle box to throw it in when im done!.. Thanks for makin all your videos man! appreciate it!
Another priceless piece of acoustic history rescued from oblivion, ready to soldier on, making beautiful inspiring music for another 50 years and more :-)
Hey Dave! I've been watching this Martin repair since part one. Apart from to say "awesome job", I want to say thank you as well. It's amazing to see a man working with love, and just for the love of the Music. God bless you, Dave!
Just Wanted to say that I haven't had that much fun watching videos since those adult site ones!!! It was a great explanation of a restauration. That's gotta ring to it....Keep up the good work!
When you altered the neck angle did you compensate the fretboard from the 14th on up, or does it have a deflection there? Great video. Thank you. ( I hope the question is reasonable )
@davey4557 Thank you for your reply. I have had issues with a customer because he sighted the fingerboard, saw the "kink", and refused to pay. Luthiers are truly an abused group of artists. Pay NEVER matches the efforts of restoration. Just my opinion. Anyway, you are my favorite on the tube.
hey dave i was thinking about sanding my acoustic guitar to the bare wood because i like a satin/matte feel better than a high gloss. would this ruin my guitar in anyway such as the bindings or what not? or should i use a poly remover chemical. love the videos dave
@davey4557 wow , thanks so much for the quick reply. you saved a guitars life! so if this is the case why doesnt this happen to martin and taylor guitars without the high gloss finishes?
@YourVagIsMine Maybe because the satin finish guitars are more modern & this guitar is old and neglected. --I don't think this one will ever be reliable in the longer term. It would have been better with a replacement neck, maybe sourced from Martin.
Wow that was awesome. I've got a '42 J-45 that needs that kind of love, but Gibson said a couple of grand to restore ? Anyway it looks bad but plays great thanks for the lessons.
If you'd removed the 14th and 15th frets, cutout a rectangular piece of the fretboard using a stanley knife and sharp chisel, filled it in with a piece of rosewood, leveled it, replaced the frets, you'd then have an invisible repair
The "glaze" on the back? What happened? Old finish showing through? Strings, Earthwood? Sounds sort of Tinny or Thin compared to an old Martin. But, never can tell listening through a laptop speaker.
i watched from start to finish.....amazing job!!I I'm currently working on a martin auditorium 000-15. The owner dropped it and put a nice 17 inch multiple crack in the bass-side side. so far so fun. happy new year.
I watched the entire ordeal of this repair on the Martin....This will give me encouragement when l I find someone to repair My old Gibson flying V with the same broken heel issues....Thanks Dave
Davey, I really enjoyed your videos. I am just learning guitar repair myself and have an old Harmony Sovereign that looks like it was in a bar fight. The dovetail joint looks very similar to the Martin that you repaired and the body has very similar cracks. Without a truss, I would have loved to know how you set the neck angle seeing you had only one shot at it. Great job ...very impressive.
A lot of thinking, experience and a good guess as to what to expect. The worst case would have been a lot of extra work on the bridge and saddle.Cheers !!!
@williamvzajac Set the neck angle with the idea of a tall bridge saddle with ZERO bridge deflection, When you assemble the guitar, if it bellies a bit you will have plenty of saddle to shave off to get it right. I hope this helps you out
Dave, the next vintage guitar I'll buy on ebay from the states I'll have directly shipped to you for work, if you can ship it to me in sweden after that is!
