this is the coolest bike I remember lusting after when I was twelve or thirteen. It was probably marketed with California in mind, hence the "Campus" designation. Eventually I ended up with a 66 Twin Jet 100, in the same colour. I restored a stable of six of the YL1s about ten years ago, they have all scattered now, after the divorce. Finding a Campus 60 would the the ultimate, for me.
I owned a YJ-2 (also known as the Campus or the Riverside). It gave me up to 200 miles per Imperial gallon ( 1.25 US gallons) if I babied it. Usual daily riding netted more like 120 mpg, or 96 mp(US)gallon. These are real numbers, generated by carefully topping up the tank with the bike in the same position each time.
the manufacturer's claim that these 50, 60, 80cubic centimeter motors will go 200 miles per gallon, is actually a theoretically projected estimate with the engine turning at less than 900 r.p.m.
think about it,...even a 350 cubic inch V8 will consume far less fuel at that speed. though certainly not yielding a co-relating performance in actual miles per gallon ...that is; with wieght and displacement in mind.
@ms6pix This video was posted a few years back, before we knew much about the bike. After shattering the piston at the end of a 2,000 mile summer, we found out it was a 60cc. Not a lot of info on these, but thanks for clarifying! Still looking for a piston/ring/cylinder set....

700mpg?
Is that a joke?
You know modern 2stroke 50cc scooters just push 200mph is you're lucky?
Blaze0303 3 years ago
No, it gets nowhere near 200 mpg. In fact, I'm not sure if it gets much over 60 mpg without a strong tail wind going downhill....
