  • There is a major difference between a bark that invites you to play and a bark that warns you not to come any closer. How would animals survive if they couldn't understand the signals? Even people who don't own dogs can make the difference! It's not like dogs "developed" different kinds of vocals so humans could understand them better, lol.

  • Do you have to be a scientist to understand that? :) That is their language. Can you understand different English words? Different intonations? D'oh.

  • lôl_ì_féEl_sÕ_l0ñëlY_tÔÐÂÿ

  • @CutieaaVivienaa120 lol_you_äre_a_bot_so_yØu_dônt_feal_emotion

  • well is would be pretty stupid in evolutionary terms if they couldn't.

  • Human beings utter different types of sounds. Research shows that humans can understand the differences between these different types of founds.

  • OMG this has got to be a joke right, wow you guys are so smart, any dog owner could have told you this!! lol

  • do scientist not realize that humans arent the only ones with a spoken language. are they just now realizing that all animals can communicate and that they are all smarter than humans??? im be serious for all you haters out there, if you dont believe me think about it, most animals survive on instinct if you plop them in a forest they'll know how to forage for food or wat not. if you plop a human they will spend all their time looking for a road cause we cant survive without our technology

  • that chick sounds so dull its depresing

  • Hey, maybe now we can learn to communicate with our dogs... Oh wait...

  • thats fucking amazing! no really i'm in a state of shock dogs can understand one and other

  • my dog knows what alot fo words mean. Also I was at a friends house and when they say squirrel the dog goes and runs around looking for it :p

  • no shit really they can hear MORE THEN one sound and understand it wow BREAK THROUGH

  • dish network

  • the last pic looked natsy!!!!!!

  • I love the dog pics lol :D

  • my dog heard the second bark, came up to me, then went looking around in the backyard

  • UNKAODYA; i meant to reply to your

comment, but i it mark as spam. crap.

anyway, i wanted to say, you are absolutly right. and eeires, no research is ever a waste.

  • crazy

my dog heard the second bark

and started barking like if someone was hear

  • actually dogs can tell the difference between the engine sound of two identical cars .

  • What? if the two cars are identical then there is no difference to be heard ... Are you pulling the piss or are you retarded?

  • hhahahahahahahahahahaha serious RAGE HAHAHA

  • oh and haha you stupid fucks you died on 9 11 couse you're stupid and you're still stupid not to do anything about it , i would estableshed a real terrorist group . viva america . fact : america about 306 million people , romania about 1.5 million people , microsoft , nasa above 50 % of the employees romanian , romanian is the second language spoken in microsoft . what ? do you like romanians so much ? or y just didnt find enough geniouses in your gr8 big shitty country ?

  • -_- dude shut the FUCK up no one cares and you can go to prison 25-Life for a national terror threat such as the one you so "courageously" made here...dumbass

  • dude, asshole

  • i know , i know tx for the chill and your atitude , it's just that sometimes i cant controle my rage , i feel alone in this world , surounded by retards , it's nice to know there are still ppl like u (and if u caled me asshole pls read my first mg and then check it out if you dont agree , dogs can tell the diference between what we hear as 2 identical sounds , and yes 2 identical cars can not have the same sound , i repet the diference it is perceved by the dogs but not by us , i'll post a link.

  • i think "zanulalex" was taking the piss out of you the whole time, hilarious!

  • what a waste of research this will absolutely not help anything

  • you know, research is not always about profit. most often it`s about knowledge. did any space research help you in anything? does knowing that mars has 2 moons helps in everyday life? not really. but it`s nice to know.

  • Is this where my taxes are going?

  • yeah better they go on that illegal war.

  • yeah got a problem?

  • The commentator is impassive and doesnt speak naturally.

  • i like these vids..

    PEE - point, example, explanation..

its all easy to take in !

  • i cant believe people are getting paid to do this pointless research

  • Well I hope it didnt take too long to find that out. I learned that when I was still in my diapers.

Dogs can also tell food from a piece of wood....wow

  • Wow I learned nothing.

  • rotfled...

  • "New research shows that dogs can distinguish between two different types of barks."

You dont say... Who did this research? A two year old? How much money did it take them to find that out? :/

  • 200 million dollars and 6000 man hours

  • @beckytheinsomniac There's a difference between asserting something as opinion and fact. As silly as it sounds and what appears to be a waste of resources, when dealing strictly with provable facts, it lays the foundation for more research... likely into areas that neither of us can fathom. Take for example the MP3 format, it was created by understanding what sounds a cat could hear.

  • they obviously know the difference between barks.. they dont just do it for nothing. lol

  • animals are smarter than we give them credence for.

  • credence??

  • fancy word for credit:P

  • if dogs can understand human words and associate them with doing a task, (which is what i find amazing) it should be plain old obvious that they can distinguish different emotions in another dogs bark.

  • Hungarian dogs are cool

  • Well I for one find that quite interesting.

  • Wow I learned nothing.

  • maybe they just thought it was a different dog.

  • Wow...scientist just found out about something that dog lovers understood for years.

  • What dog lovers 'understood' is too anecdotal to be objective, even given the consensus. One needs an objective methodology i.e. science to make more certain of said understanding. So yes, there is importance to this experiment, no matter how trivial it or its results might seem.

  • Well, isn't that fucking exciting.

  • barking mad

  • poochengeez hit the nail on the head.

  • Then again there can be just as much meaning to a bite. There can be a bite with the intent to warn of and a bite with the intent to kill.

  • Oh yes thanks to Youtube for running such smooth (and fair) posting system there seem to be no delays unlike on other sites.

  • To kill...? My God, I'll never gonna go to your house, your Chihuahua might just kill me.

  • I doubt a "Chihuahua" will but I tell you what I used to work as a post man and when those dogs bite with the intent to hurt they bring about the desired effect.

  • when I say those dogs I'm infering dobermans (I wrote the last response very last at night). Take it easy.

  • Ask em why they lick their plums...hell nevermind. I know why.

  • WOOOF!  {You can quote em on this!}

  • dog language!

  • bark, bark, bark, bark ......

  • How awesome will life be when they invent a dog bark translator?

  • Pretty freakin' awesome.

  • it doesn't matter if its obvious, Earth is flat was also obvious at one time. science never take a obvious assumptions and call it fact without tested evidence for it. there isn't going to be super huge science discovers on a weekly bases... give em a break!

  • wow.. what an astounding revelation.. *yawn*

  • Animal are a blessing.

  • Big deal, my dog at least makes 5 different barks: High aggression bark with snarl, warning bark to strangers, short friendly bark to say hello to strange dogs, bark to me to get my attention, and whinning bark to say it's really upset. Do we need research to do this????

  • We have just become more stupid after watching this.

  • The dogs were so beautiful. ♥

  • News flash, dogs bark to communicate.

    As opposed to what else?

  • unrinating on the fence :)

  • Love to see which government/board paid money to give a grant to that researcher.

  • boring

  • well nothing new but the pics were cool i love dogs

  • dogs recognize their own language? NOOO, RLY?

  • I don't have a dog, but the first bark sound I clearly recognize as the annoying bark of a dog being approached by a stranger (e.g. me) and hoepfully is behind a fence or on a leash.

  • i wish i could recognize my dogs' marks

  • Wow, we've discovered dogs understand their own language.

Sometimes I think some scientists are a lil on the slow side.

  • lol true

  • Cute dogs, NS has discoverd the internet.

  • Shut your god dammed dogs up already, people!

  • aint this obvious. they might be animals but they aint stupid.

  • This was already well known.

    What a dumb video.

  • OMFG.. Those Dogs Were Adorable

  • aww doggies

  • I hate her voice.

  • I like it...it adds variety, your just intolerant, inflexible, and ultimately a douche

  • For some reason I agree...

  • the last picture was kinda wierd but like the guy before me its fairly obvious

  • If you are a dog owner this is very obvious my dog uses not only different barks to communicate with other dogs but with me I didn't need a study to know this sorry

  • Nope...

  • Is it just me or wasn't this fact incredibly obvious?

  • it's not just you...

  • I speak dog, then?

  • This video was still worth watching for the cute dog pictures.

  • Well, even I can tell from a dog's bark what he thinks of me (an innocent stranger of a threat or a potential friend, perhaps some other shades in-between). It kind of becomes obvious when you grow up with a bunch of dogs. I suppose there are many more variations for a dog, although sounds alone tell relatively little, one needs to see the dog get the full message.

  • so what can we stay in the frame hows does dogs barking help the human race i ask you

  • As "man's best friend", anything we learn about dogs has some benefit for us as well, improving our relationship. What's disturbing though is your inference that if a study isn't somehow directly beneficial to man, it is somehow unworthy or unjustified. Science would've hardly ever progressed had researchers taken that selfish attitude. For instance, what difference is it to man what makes a black hole? How Saturn got its rings? What an eclipse is? etc etc

  • look my point is this ,off what inportance is it that dogs have different barks for different meanings The greatest thing in the world is not so much where we are

but in what direction we are moving how will knowing this help

  • I'll add that I wouldn't be surprised if dogs, especially in packs, have different barks for different meanings, but its probably not that complex. Woof! Dolphins noises are complex and varied enough to possibly be a language but nobody is really sure.

  • It should be expected considering how social Dogs are and how cooperative their ancestors (Wolves) were in hunting packs. Surely you've got to have at least two if not more meanings to organize a pack leader and a strategy to take down prey in the organized fashion they do.

  • yeah so the dogs can hear that two different types of bark sound different. So what? It doesn't mean that they understand what each means. They just got used to the first bark and so didn't react to it as much after a few times. This is hardly groundbreaking, is it?

  • and this stops global warming how?!?!?!?!?!

  • the test itself doesnt make sense, with the 14 dogs, like how exactly does it make you interpret that they see a difference... cos their hr is increasing in both cases

  • Exactly what i was thinking.

  • Interesting, thanks!

  • Of course dogs can recognize different barks. It's one of the ways they communicate. Anybody that has spent time with dogs should be aware of this. Sort of a silly study. It needs to get to the heart of the matter, deciphering what each of the barks probably mean.

  • In science, often the obviouse needs to be tested so that you have solid evidence for it's occurence. Even though it's tediouse and sometimes frustrating it's nessesary so that absolutly nothing is simply assumed.

  • that's kinda' what they just did.

  • duh a dog owner could tell you that

  • awesome!

  • if you have a dog then you would know this already

  • interestting

  • uhh, no shit

  • That's pretty weird O>o

  • after that its still only just ossible,i think second time around they wonder what the hells making a noise! lol, whenever a dog barks on the tv my dog knows it isnt real so it doesnt bother with it,yet outside it knows the difference,i think something is lost when reording it!
