I actually remember when this aired!! How cool to see it again!! YMO became my all time favorite electronic band of the 80's and beyond! I find it shocking today that Don didn't know who Kraftwerk where... that's too funny!!!
I remember trans europe express being played plenty of times on the show!
Soul Train specialized more in disco and soul music, which was obviously not Kraftwerk's style of music. On the other hand, YMO's music had strong disco influences, so it was more closer to the kind of music the Soul Train folks would have been listening to.
OH!! REALLY?? I NEVER KNEW!! AND JUST THINK I ONLY WATCHED THE SHOW FOR 20 YEARS!!!!!!! AS A MATTER OF FACT SMARTY PANTS I REMEMBER WHEN THE SHOW WAS TAPED IN CHICAGO!! BUT I AM SURE YOU WILL SCHOOL ME ON THAT AS WELL!!
Oh really??? Wow and I only watch soul train for nearly 25 years!!!! Thanks smarty pants for enlightening me!! I bet next you will be telling me that Soul Train did NOT start as an after school show that taped in Chicago up until 1976!!!

Yeah, it's pretty obvious the Soul Train guys didn't know who Kraftwerk were. That shouldn't be surprising, since it was all about disco and soul back in those days. YMO's own new unique synth-pop sound in "Firecracker" / "Computer Game" really helped popularize electronic music in America.
@Jagged85 I have to disagree ...I am a Chicago native, and on WVON and WBMX black radio stations in the late 70s and early 80s, DJ Herb Kent would play songs from European artists - songs by Kraftwerk, Soft Cell, and many Italo-Disco songs, which was why the Chicago house music crowd was more open to and accepting of the Euro-Synth sound ..."Numbers" by Kraftwerk was a CLASSIC played by BLACK house music DJS back in the early 80s
Absolutely wonderful interview. I think YMO are different from Kraftwerk. I think YMO are more fusion-based band where there is an interesting interplay between traditional and electronic instruments.
I also think YMO have more of an upbeat synth-pop sound to their music, while Kraftwerk's music usually sounds somewhat more robotic. I think that's because YMO were a fusion band always trying to fuse different genres together in their electronic music, while Kraftwerk were more of a pure electronic music band that didn't seem quite as willing to absorb outside influences as much as YMO did.
@Jagged85 ..Oh yeah, and Kraftwerk, in a documentary, said, themselves, that FUNK MUSIC influenced some of their songs in the latter 70s/early 80s, i.e., "It's More Fun to Compute"

now that I think about it, this is the only time I've ever heard Yukihiro speak in english, not including his singing on YMO and solo albums.
