@Acidsplasher nobody really knows. some people say its because only mothers can become witches, and she cries because her kids became normal infected and died. others say its because she hates what she has become (an infected, duh) and cries because of that.and ive heard a few theories that she cries because shes scared, and when you get to close, its like a wild animal in a corner, which is why she attacks then runs away

The Witch starts off sitting down crying. She is sensitive to being shot, light, noise, and proximity. If you startle her, she will come after you (not anybody else). She can incapacitate in a single hit, or kill you instantly on Expert skill level.

The idea of Witches in Left 4 Dead is for all the survivors to go into stealth mode when they hear the Witch cry. You usually turn your lights off and be careful of what you do.

However, nowadays everybody knows how to kill the Witch in one shot.

Me too. That's why I investigated! If you can see her, she just keeps running (because the game won't make her vanish if you can see it).

If you play versus and follow her around as an infected, you'll be able to see her disappear.

That's fixed of course, but just a tidbit of history.

You can startle her a second time if you set her on fire. I'm not sure if there are other ways just yet.

Oh, and since I was chasing her I could see her running for longer. Normally they'll disappear when they're out of sight.

I actually did that straight after I played Church for the first time.

There's nobody in there, you just hear the sounds. When you open the door, a Special Infected will appear. I'm guessing it won't appear before you open the door because you'll be able to hear what it is, and thus ruining the moment.

I'm also guessing there's nobody in the room to save memory. You don't need to have a person in there while you're outside.
