Sounds really good!! How would you compare this to the Epiphone Dot Es335? Is it better than the Epi or are they just very similar, 'cause I think the price's about the same.
If i am looking for an electric guitar that will be playing a lot of acoustic songs and some electric guitar songs, and i want to to be a good clear sound. I dont like all of the distortion. Is this guitar good for me? Like i won't be playing punk or hardcore. Is guitar good for that function?
@Justincole429 Hi Justin - I have this guitar and while I love it, I wonder if it might not be the best choice for what you are looking for. You could take a look at the AF75 - same price and great fit and finish, but it is a larger hollowbody that sounds very nice (albiet not as bright as an actual acoustic). You could also look at something like an Acousticaster if you want more of an acoustic sound. Good luck shopping!
I love the bluesy tone on this guitar, but I gotta ask, would this be a good guitar for rhythm guitar for harder stuff like 70s AC/DC, Ramones-style Punk, or even straight ahead rock like Foo Fighters?
Can you give a little information as to what AMP is used in this video and how you have the AMP set up? GREAT VIDEO and an incredible sound from a 300 guitar. Thanks.
You keep repeating that this guitar is good for blues, but I play Hard Rock, Punk, etc. and from what I've seen I Really Like how this guitar looks (I LOVE HOW IT LOOKS) and sounds but THE QUESTION is: Would it be a Nice guitar for playing Hard Rock/Punk and some Alternative Rock???
@johnhguitar Thanks a Lot John!!! I play guitar in an Alternative Rock/Pop Punk Band but I'm starting a new band that is more Punk Rock old school (plus) Garage Rock.
I play a Telecaster, and I wanted to buy a new one to change the sound a little bit.
@006sick dude you can use any guitar for hard rock or punk or whatever music its how you use the thing not WHAT you use... its the heart behind the guitar that plays it not the other way around..
@006sick I shred metal on mine. It's straight FLAWLESS. The only thing I will say is that as someone who plays metal/thrash/punk a lot, the paint DOES scratch fairly easily. I have never worn a belt while playing this guitar, and my DiMarzio Clicklock strap tends to do some damage. That being said, it's my favorite guitar I've ever owned, and by far the most versatile. Hope this helps!
Hey John, I'm looking to buy a Ibanez Artcore AS73L as I am a lefty. How does it differ from the guitar you show here? Would you recommend this guitar?
All I can tell you is that Ibanez is a good company and to buy any variation in their models would be a choice you would have to make. I've always like what they do.
For blues it's BB King, Freddie King, Albert King, Albert Collins, Mike Bloomfield, Eric Clapton, Jimmie Page, and Jimi Hendrix and later SRV. For jazz I like Wes Montgomery, Joe Pass, Pat Martino, Tal Farlow, and others.
Ted Greene was a great player and teacher as is Bob Conti. So many great musicians and good people.
Maybe someone asked this way down the list somewhere, but I'm wondering how you are getting that nice bright tone in the high register. What amp are you using?
that a BB King trick. You put your little finger on note on the high E string and mute the rest of the strings with the other fingers of your left hand. You just drape your fingers lightly on the strings and then strum-slap the strings making sure that one note is the only sound that comes out. And be sure to slide the note.
Hello John. This is a very high quality review in all aspects. Could you please review the Ibanez AS 93 versus the Ibanez AS 103. There is a big jump in price between the two and I think you would give them a fair appraisal.
That's some really nice tone man. And to all the people asking what style it's good for: you make your own style, so find whatever feels nice to play and sounds good to and you can play anything. The player makes the guitar, not the other way around.
I bought this guitar 11 months ago, it has a very nice sound. I have a vox valvetronix vt15 amp. You can use it for blues, rock, even metal. You can play enter sandman on this excellent, for example. I use it mostly for alternative(coldplay like stuff), stoner rock, metal and every other kind of rock. Blues is an art, which I have not yet begun to study. ;)
So to the people who were wondering if it's fit for other genres such as rock and metal. The answer is YES! :)
Would this also be good to play Weezer, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Jimi Hendrix, Beatles, or any other classic rock or alternative rock music? Please get back to me soon on if i should get this guitar or if i shouldn't, please give me suggestions on what i should get.
@oyecarnal just because hes not famous doesnt mean to say he isnt a ' blues guy' the guitarists who you mentioned are all good players but by the looks of things this man knows what hes doing in terms of the blues . You're probably pretty jealous considering he can actually do the blues justice whereas i doubt you can .
@johnhguitar I like this kinda guitar and I'm on a pretty tight budget, however; could it play anything but blues? It's a good review but you kinda stuck to one genre (which is okay), I would just like to know if it could play rock or something suchlike?
@doknero Yes. Semi-hollow guitars are used by a bunch of people to play rock music to great effect: George Thorogood, Malcolm Young, Ted Nugent, Noel Gallagher, Keith Richards, etc.
great demo, i want to buy this guitar, and this video answered all my questions about it, exept one, does this ibanez have a good unplugged acoustic sound? i mean, not like a real acoustic, but does it have a good sound like for practicing without an amp?

Hi John i need some advice, I'm an intermediate guitarist and I play Beatles, Rolling Stones, and similar styles of music on the guitar. Would you recommend this guitar for me?
They also come with a Bigsby-style tremolo, only made by Ibanez.
Are these any good? Is it worth getting one without trem and having a Bigsby installed or is the Ibanez trem good enough to buy one with the trem stock on it?
John you gotta give me some advice, Im in the 500-600 range for a guitar and i need a very versitile guitar.i really like to play prog rock though like david gilmoure/pink floyd..do you have any suggestions? thanks
@slipknot56000 If you mean 500-600 British pounds, I know that for 700 you can get an American Special Stratocaster, and if you haggle you can get one for 650 or even 600 if your good at haggling :) 500 Pounds though can get you a very nice mexico stratocaster.
Hey John, need an opinion on a guitar. Should I go for an Ibanez Artcore, or an Epiphone Casino? I'm mostly a blues player, but I'm also into alt rock and indie rock.
@johnhguitar I'm the proud owner of a Korean made Epiphone SG, my first electric guitar and it's really good. Been playing for 6 years now and I've never had any problems with it at all (as long as it's set up properly, which I didn't do until last year). But even without proper setup it was a good instrument.
Thinking about getting myself an Epi Dot but seeing this makes me doubt...
@johnhguitar Hey, thanks a bunch man. I did go with the Casino after playing a back-to-back comparison of that and an Artcore, and I have to say I love it.
i just got back from guitar center with this guitar never seen it before.....i love it and i just looked up this vid lol.....definitely gonna subscribe.....i am gonna get a friend at another store here( railroad bazaar) to put a tone bleed and mid scoop mod on it....and then ima get it pinstriped more.....good review though
i need a pro tip jon please help i know u get alot of messages please rply -what guitar do you recommend for a intermediate player i was leaning toward shecter hell raiser ,eppiphone prophecy ex les paul, or gibson studio .i cant use anything with a floyd rose i cnt maintain it. do you have any recomendations please let me know
Of the guitars you have reviewed, which one do you think is best for a beginner, cheap, and good for playing rock? I like bands like Rolling Stones and ACDC, but i also like Weezer and Sublime. Can you help me out?
great review... just got an Ibanez similar to this but honeyburst flametop/abalone blocks. forget the haters man; i don't know which like more: the reviews or the playing. just curious, what kind of camera and recording equipment are you using? i've thought about just making some videos of myself on the couch with a viking helmet on or something goofing around with the guitar. stupid and self indulgent but fun for the whole family!
Great review as always. I like how you give an OPINION, rather than just stating specs... it's helpful in a way many of the other video reviews are vacuous and unhelpful. Thanks!
I want to buy either the Epiphone Dot or the Artcore AS75. I even thought for a little extra I could get the AG95 but that may break my budget ... I need a jazz guitar to give as a gift to my musician husband :)) Please help give me advice :))
My husband is a profesional musician. Here is a link to him playing: youtube.com/watch?v=3jpsPF2LxqY
@joeya62 most definitely get the ibanez cause i've tried both b4 cause i wanna jazz guitar also. and the artcore has a nicer warmer tone than the dot does
@choco634 Artcores have shitty shrill ceramic ACH1 & ACH2 pickups. Now, if you do like I did and yank them out and throw in a pair of Gibson Classic 57s (or even some GFS Alnico II knockoffs) then you've got yourself a stew.
Nice review. I am looking to get back into playing (used to play a Fender Jag) and I think this is going to be a good start for me. Your review helped me make a decision. Thanks.
Myself I always found Ibanez had nice fretboards. I tried an Ibanez AF series jazz box and was instantly home on it and jamming np. Not something you can do comfortably on every guitar.
The wanker RG guitars had always been decent players as well could be I like the fretwire.
Targeting certain tweaks you can make on an economically priced axe you can get away with a decent playing guitar. Setup work, possible pickup change and breaking it in can alter a perspective as well.
I really like your playing style, and your philosophy on guitars about prices and quality, I recently bought an axl eldorado and I m really satified with that guitar for hat little price I paid...best regards.
I bought myself the Ibanez AS-73tcr not all that long ago. It's an absolute beauty for the price. I replaced the bridge pickup with a seymour duncan, and thats all ive done, just to give it a bit more high end crunch. I strongly suggest the artcore line guys, you wont be disapointed.
You know, it's hard to be honest these days without people jumping all over you. I'm giving my honest opinion not being too negative about this guitar. I'm just comparing it with real high quality expensive guitars. When a person goes out to buy their first instrument they usually can't understand how something can cost so much because they have no experience and don't need something that good to learn on. If I was a politician I would tell you that this is the best guitar in the world.
@johnhguitar Thanks for the review. People are always spouting off on YT because its easy to talk smack without being accountable. I appreciate all the gear reviews here it helps me decide what I may buy next. I am currently looking at the Ibanez artcore line and the Epiphone sheraton II line, older ones, for a nice hollow body without breaking the bank. Any major differences? If not, then I guess I have to try them both to see which feels better. Used ones are $100 or more for the epi than Iba
@johnhguitar Man,thank you for a nice review. It's easier with good instrument ,isn't?
I looked at some other reviews on this model and people really like them. I like how you do it,since you just don't talk about it,or just play it. It is good balance, which is important .
When you really are interested about some particular guitar and not just try to go on someone's channel and be rude (oh how badass it is to hide behind screen name, right?) you need to hear both, guitar and info about it.
@johnhguitar I really appreciate your review of the Ibanez artcore. I was torn between several instruments, and since I am on a limited budget I wanted to get a good guitar for a good price. I watched several of your reviews on various instruments and read up a bit before heading down to the local music store. I like the Ibanez a lot. For the price, I don't think you can beat it. Also, after doing some online research on epiphone I realize that your "critical" review of the Joe Pass was deserved
@BlackRose2222 Look into Muddy Waters, Albert King or Howlin' Wolf. there's a video lesson out there for Howlin Wolf's "Smokestack Lightning". Fun to play go for it!
Dude, so true about the blues man. People like Justin Beiber are spoiling the taste of music. Plus, the world needs to acknowledge that without blues, there would be no Hard Rock or Metal. Cheerio for the Blues man. :)
It's really a great guitar for such a low price, the pick ups might not be a+ and i will eventually replace the stock pick ups in mine but they are way better than what i expected. In my opinion the Ibanez AS are better built than the chinese Epiphones and dont look as cheap.
this guy sounds like a blues guy

I own an Ibanez Artcore. Killer guitar! I play Heavy metal/Metal. the sound out of it is so frigging sweet, OMG! I LOVE my Artcore! From it's Gothic black looks to it's tone. "AWESOME METAL AX" !" ALL MINE : )

I don't think it sounds like an ES335. I'd rather to say it doesn't have sustain at all.

Hi John i need some advice, I'm an intermediate guitarist and I play Beatles, Rolling Stones, and similar styles of music on the guitar. Would you recommend this guitar for me?
lfcuruguay19 11 months ago
Have you been drinking John? You don't have to defend your blues qualifications. Fuck what people think.
randompersonsband1 1 year ago
They also come with a Bigsby-style tremolo, only made by Ibanez.
Are these any good? Is it worth getting one without trem and having a Bigsby installed or is the Ibanez trem good enough to buy one with the trem stock on it?
yekshemesh4alig 1 year ago
John you gotta give me some advice, Im in the 500-600 range for a guitar and i need a very versitile guitar.i really like to play prog rock though like david gilmoure/pink floyd..do you have any suggestions? thanks

For this kind of money an early Fender Strat made in Japan.

@johnhguitar from like the 80s?
slipknot56000 1 year ago
@slipknot56000 If you mean 500-600 British pounds, I know that for 700 you can get an American Special Stratocaster, and if you haggle you can get one for 650 or even 600 if your good at haggling :) 500 Pounds though can get you a very nice mexico stratocaster.

Wud these be better for punk over the normal as73 that I've got?

Hey John, need an opinion on a guitar. Should I go for an Ibanez Artcore, or an Epiphone Casino? I'm mostly a blues player, but I'm also into alt rock and indie rock.
FlyingPandaCCN 1 year ago
I like Ibanez but sometimes there's an Epiphone that's good quality made elsewhere than Korea.
johnhguitar 1 year ago
@johnhguitar I'm the proud owner of a Korean made Epiphone SG, my first electric guitar and it's really good. Been playing for 6 years now and I've never had any problems with it at all (as long as it's set up properly, which I didn't do until last year). But even without proper setup it was a good instrument.
Thinking about getting myself an Epi Dot but seeing this makes me doubt...
yekshemesh4alig 1 year ago
@johnhguitar Hey, thanks a bunch man. I did go with the Casino after playing a back-to-back comparison of that and an Artcore, and I have to say I love it.

hey John, do you think this guitar would sound nice if i want to play some jazz?
rudster711 1 year ago
Yes! but for me it's the thickness of the strings. I use heavy strings when I play jazz.
johnhguitar 1 year ago
Of the guitars you have reviewed, which one do you think is best for a beginner, cheap, and good for playing rock? I like bands like Rolling Stones and ACDC, but i also like Weezer and Sublime. Can you help me out?

Find a Mexican Custom Tele one with humbuking pickups. It has a little of everything for that type of rock.

great review... just got an Ibanez similar to this but honeyburst flametop/abalone blocks. forget the haters man; i don't know which like more: the reviews or the playing. just curious, what kind of camera and recording equipment are you using? i've thought about just making some videos of myself on the couch with a viking helmet on or something goofing around with the guitar. stupid and self indulgent but fun for the whole family!
morddas 1 year ago
Great review as always. I like how you give an OPINION, rather than just stating specs... it's helpful in a way many of the other video reviews are vacuous and unhelpful. Thanks!

I want to buy either the Epiphone Dot or the Artcore AS75. I even thought for a little extra I could get the AG95 but that may break my budget ... I need a jazz guitar to give as a gift to my musician husband :)) Please help give me advice :))

joeya62 1 year ago
@joeya62 most definitely get the ibanez cause i've tried both b4 cause i wanna jazz guitar also. and the artcore has a nicer warmer tone than the dot does
choco634 1 year ago
@choco634 Artcores have shitty shrill ceramic ACH1 & ACH2 pickups. Now, if you do like I did and yank them out and throw in a pair of Gibson Classic 57s (or even some GFS Alnico II knockoffs) then you've got yourself a stew.

I really like your playing style, and your philosophy on guitars about prices and quality, I recently bought an axl eldorado and I m really satified with that guitar for hat little price I paid...best regards.
edoardomorellimusic 1 year ago
I bought myself the Ibanez AS-73tcr not all that long ago. It's an absolute beauty for the price. I replaced the bridge pickup with a seymour duncan, and thats all ive done, just to give it a bit more high end crunch. I strongly suggest the artcore line guys, you wont be disapointed.
StephenFiorentini 1 year ago
Hi how are you
harmonicminorshred 1 year ago
You know, it's hard to be honest these days without people jumping all over you. I'm giving my honest opinion not being too negative about this guitar. I'm just comparing it with real high quality expensive guitars. When a person goes out to buy their first instrument they usually can't understand how something can cost so much because they have no experience and don't need something that good to learn on. If I was a politician I would tell you that this is the best guitar in the world.
johnhguitar 1 year ago 24
@johnhguitar Thanks for the review. People are always spouting off on YT because its easy to talk smack without being accountable. I appreciate all the gear reviews here it helps me decide what I may buy next. I am currently looking at the Ibanez artcore line and the Epiphone sheraton II line, older ones, for a nice hollow body without breaking the bank. Any major differences? If not, then I guess I have to try them both to see which feels better. Used ones are $100 or more for the epi than Iba

I don't know what it is exactly but I like these Ibanez guitars over the Dot EPIs.....???
johnhguitar 1 year ago
@johnhguitar
I agree , I just bought one today after AB it with a few EPI Dots,
What I liked is the matte finish was quicker on the neck than
the gloss on the EPI , and when you get your hand up near the 17th fret
the side of my hand would hit the lower bout on the Epi dot , this AS73 still
had room where my hand didnt hit the bout.
I currently own over 75 Electrics and this one will be my beater for a while.
Wizard101TalonBlade 1 year ago
@johnhguitar Man,thank you for a nice review. It's easier with good instrument ,isn't?
I looked at some other reviews on this model and people really like them. I like how you do it,since you just don't talk about it,or just play it. It is good balance, which is important .
When you really are interested about some particular guitar and not just try to go on someone's channel and be rude (oh how badass it is to hide behind screen name, right?) you need to hear both, guitar and info about it.

@johnhguitar I like your honesty and your videos. It's hard to find honesty and frankness these days.

@johnhguitar do you think a guitar like this would sound good with a more funky kinda style?

It's really a great guitar for such a low price, the pick ups might not be a+ and i will eventually replace the stock pick ups in mine but they are way better than what i expected. In my opinion the Ibanez AS are better built than the chinese Epiphones and dont look as cheap.
Eurobubble70 1 year ago
Your style is pretty unique and that's pretty awesome. I suppose the Artcore was to show that Ibanez is not just a rock guitar manufacture.

These aren't only good for blues, I use mine through a digitech metal master into a fender frontman 65r and I get an amazing Breaking Benjamin sound.
