  • I used to listen to this album over and over when it first came out. A highlight for me was going to San Francisco to watch them perform.

  • saw Paul Collins couple of months ago at the blue star cafe and met him. They sounded amazing and Paul was such a down to earth guy. It was a tiny gig.

  • ahhhh uh on the great MnM's "I'm Tired" 45

    it's Harlan (hollander) / gtr

    (and peter case/bass)

sooooo, confused with that long forgotten actual cassette dub / Breakaways that was briefly sitting on the kitchen table at 12967 Kittridge north hollywood back then. annnd wait. ? who drummed on the MnM's 45? too much info am harde to remember makes barbies brother's head hurt.

  • ("MIke was the original drummer in The Beat.")

yess but who played drums on the Breakaways tracks ha

the guy who played gtr at that session (and i believe he's on the great MnMs 45, definitley) was a housemate at the time, yea whatever, but he brought homke the "breakaways demo" and we were all wot? huh? this is kinda a lot better than the dopey wimpy Nerves that nobody in LA liked to speak of. "uh, look at the player credit u idiot. NO JACK LEE huh!" hmm historical info, extremely sketchy

  • @hectorsalinasisback + WTF are you talking about? This is a totally nonpolitical POP song. Keep your Ron Paul testimonials to threads that have bearing to your beliefs. Okay? Thanks.

  • People who dislike Paul Collins Beat are liberal idiots who support Obama and Bush's wars in the middle east where the U.S. spends billions to invade and brutally occupy sovereign nations where we force them to accept democracy as a form of government at the expense of our taxpayers and the cost of countless lives of innocent U.S. soldiers and civilians. Real conservatives know the U.S. should spend that money to create new jobs! PAUL COLLINS BEAT FANS FOR RON PAUL 2012!

  • I regard these guys as power pop. Thank goodness for the power pop bands of the late 70's and early 80's - there was not much else to listen to at that time unless you liked new wave/punk or techno...........

Paul Collins beat very underrated - many thanks for posting !

  • what is it with you guys and the term powerpop?

these guys are NEW WAVE not ""powerpopopopoppopp"

  • @bobo007xx Powerpop is the right term because it expresses energy. New Wave is just a term that the Record industtry moguls came up with just to get the new sounds that were coming out on the radio.

  • GOT IT!!!!GOLD STAMPED PROMO VINYL!!!! FOR ONE DOLLAR!!!! There is a GOD!!!!

  • I got this tune on a Promo 45 at Listen Booth, man what a great memory, Paul Collins Rocks

  • As we look at the stage, the bass amp is to the left but the bass player is to the right. I know I know... it's lip synched.

  • Al señor Collins lo he visto algunas veces por Madrid, en la Ferroviaria.

  • Top top tune.

  • So this is the reason they were called The English Beat in America? Never heard these guys before. Catchy song. And they must have been pretty big if they were on Bandstand.

  • @ar4216 What? English Beat were from England...

  • @theonlytruepunk

I know. But the were just called The Beat in England. When they came to the US they had to change their name to The English Beat. And they had to do that because of this band.

  • @ar4216 Yes, yes, yes...I didn't understand what you were saying.

  • @ar4216 Some people in the USA referred to the English Beat as the Beat, but contractually, they were always "th English Beat", and yes, it was because of this group... Going the other way, the group known as the Spinners in North america were called "the Detroit Spinners" in the UK and Ireland.

  • @theonlytruepunk I thought they were called The New Originals ... LOL Anyway in the late 70's/early 80's, Squeeze were originally UK Squeeze in the U.S. because there was an American band called Tight Squeeze. There was another band called U.K. (a descendant of King Crimson) so there was some confusion between UK and UK Squeeze, although not much because of the difference in styles, over here, and U.K. disappeared pretty quickly.

  • It's another proof how a good song has a universal & perpetual appeal!

    I loooove this happy tune!

Hey, Mr. Steve Huff! YOU ROCK!!!!

  • I REALLY liked this song... I recorded this off the radio in 1979... :-)

  • Rockin' power pop, hoping to see these guys live in a couple of weeks

  • Steven Huff always reminded me of the great Peter Asher.

  • "I wish there was an easier way, to meet the girls of today........if i had a chance this is what I'd say...I wanna be with a rock-n-roll girl..."

  • From one of the best era's in music!

  • omg my dad loves this band!

  • I'll take it over Aerosmith any day of the week.

  • who sings the song

" Girls rock and roll, in this wild wild wild" something like that

  • @Samoan26knight

You're not thinking of Quiet Riot, are you? "Cum On Feel The Noize"?

  • @Salguine "Cum On Feel The Noize" originally by 70's brit band Slade.

  • Yeah, I know, but the Quiet Riot one is generally the one people know. When that song plays anywhere, nobody goes, "Oh, wow, Slade!"

Actually, come to think of it, nobody goes "Oh, wow, Quiet Riot!" either. They usually just start rolling their eyes or laughing.

  • thank you, but i already found it. but thank you for like responding to me

  • Does anyone have a video of "You Won't Be Happy" by Paul Collins and The Beat.

  • Man... So good.

  • gotta love The Beat

  • The Beat, The Nerves, Plimsouls...wrote some of the best sub-3:00 songs ever.

  • For sure! The last great era for pop rock!

  • You can take out the "sub 3:00".

  • great debut album...1979?

not your typical rock star look-prob why never made it big

  • They really don't look that much different than the Knack who hit it big at the same time

  • Here comes Dick at the end.

  • Never tire of this band. Great sound. Thanks for posting this. Been a looooong time!

  • Great rock 'n' roll. LOVE IT. One of the best rock and roll albums ever - period.

  • @columnshift I do agree!

  • This reminds me of that old Christian band "The Alter Boys", pop that i could never get tired of.

  • Cool!

  • any one know were i can download their self titled album

  • The singer looks like Doug Feiger of the Knack.

  • wrong comment on the wrong vid,

    this is great

  • One of the rare occasions that American Bandstand wasn't lame. Great song.

  • This is Paul Collins' Beat on Dick Clark's American Bandstand. Bands did not play live on that show. Great band, great tune, though!

  • I think this is live!!! questions comments thoughts??

  • Not on American TV, BBC union rules would at least require a "live" performance before the actual show. Check out the "Old Grey Whistle Test" if you want a few hundred examples
