  • It'll buff out

  • Bonus Points to the Genius that STILL installed the Inlet Cover on the Engine.

  • Damn I love Hercs. They are tough as nails. Always brought me home safe.

  • The prop to that plane was found in the mid 1990's I helped load it onto to the USCGC IRONWOOD in dutch harbor. It was found in the nets of a fishing boat.

  • tax payer money gone with wind

  • i hate it when the engineers gave their explanation about the why and how . they should have designed sensors to monitor over temp exposure, and warn pilots before.and on;t tell me its hard,i know its not hard.not for an expensive system like a plane

  • Brings back memories, the first shot was what I saw when I stepped off the plane 3/4's of the way down the runway at Cold Bay. Was stationed at Attu and was heading home for my mid tour break. Thanks for posting...

  • OUCH!!!!

  • i BET SOME FOLKS NEEDED TO CHANGE FLIGHT SUITS AFTER THIS HAPPENED :p

  • outch.... what a gaping hole...

  • When this happens to a 130... does it get fixed or decommissioned?

  • It was fixed, and is still flying.

  • what # cg c130 was this?

  • 1706

  • a little duct tape should fix the problem

  • Good job for the crew bringing a sick bird home. How long between the pinion bearing failure and the gearbox eating iteself?

  • ouchh

  • and the pucker factor was what?

  • OMG nibble chew nibble YAY they brought it home.

  • Seen an engine gearbox separate back in 95 prop waas hanging by the cannonplugs and wires.... the sun gear launched and we never found it

  • Wow! I once had a spinner come off while doing a ramp runup (after an engine change) at SFO, but this is just a "wee bit" scarier! When and where did this happen?

  • Actually, I did check the Mag-plug prior to this flight as required by CG requirements :-)

  • I bet someone didn't check the RGB mag plugs on that plane's last BPO. Glad no one was sitting in the plane of rotation.

  • Wish we had some indication of what was going to take place. Unfortunantly it was not to be. One second she is running great, the next second... we are dealing with a propless motor

  • Seems like they would have noticed an RPM flux or an out of limits torque differential on #3 before this happened.

  • Actually, The Main Drive Gear Cracked and a large piece broke out causing the Gear to jam up and Explode the front half of the gearbox. The reason for the Gear failure was that it had been exposed to high heat from a previous Gearbox install that had a pinion bearing failure. :0)

  • most likely loss of gearbox oil pressure, RGB exploded, mid bearing support forward is gone

  • What caused the detatchment? I saw it riped half the gearbox out with it.
