• This 'rough' linetest is better than almost all animation in recent history. . . this is truly a work of art.

I cannot watch it without getting chills, becoming choked up, and nearly crying (at least tearing up)

  • The Beast is Glen Keane's masterpiece. I agree with Don about this sequence as one of the great icons of character animation. It's absolutely perfect.

  • 2 people can not animate good

  • @markafroman1 One person cannot speak "good" either.

  • @eakooffire ooo im sorry miss fancy pants with all your rich colourful wording why dont you take a cold shower and go cool of in the corner let the big people talk before you open ur mouth

  • @markafroman

you have no idea what effort is, and wouldn't recognize talent if is bit you in the ass.

Please send me any hand drawn animations you made before criticizing this masterpiece.

Second, this was all made by one guy, didn't you read the title? or listen to the guy speaking in the video?

  • yay happy ending

  • I have a special place in my heart for traditionally animated movies. They're so much work and dedication, and they hold so much magic in them. 3d movies are great too, but it takes away some of that realness and authenticity. Idk what it is, but old 2d disney movies are seriously masterpieces.

  • This scene is the most wonderful of all time...:'')

  • This is how disney should have been. Hell, I remember watching sleeping beauty over fifty times when I was 7 because of the amazing visuals and great storyline/characters!

  • Holy shit. Every time. Every goddamn time I get the worst goosebumps and I cry like a damn baby. Glen Keane, you are truly amazing.

  • I'm speechless.

  • Gosh, you can learn so much about animation by simply observing this.

  • hÊy_Ì_fèEl_sò_lÒñëly_tödàý

  • Simply Amazing! <3 Glen Keane in Heart! <3

  • You know what I just realized, they never said The Beast's real name.

  • @tokyogirl345 I think his name is Prince Adam....I've heard that here and there.

  • Dammit Glen Keane, you are the genius behind my childhood.

  • I think the Beast is Glen's masterpiece and this scene is one of animation's greatest moments

  • omg I'm crying and it's just a bunch of rough, squiggly lines. Ahhh Disney :)

  • 4:40 - 4:51 that's just blew me away!

  • Is it sad or pathetic to say that I actually CRIED at this little animation?

As a matter of fact I still DO cry at such like these.

Wonderfully made, absolutly no -one can better this, it's so sad that Disney refrained from making such stunning and trilling movies like these. So PASSIONAITE!

  • It's funny how these pencil-sketches feel as though they've got a greater sense of dimention and life than most CG-films I've seen.

  • Don't be worried, Tangled is a great movie. Worth watching it in the cinemas.

This film holds an overall approval rating of 93%, based on a sample of 28 reviews. (source: Rotten Tomatoes' Top Critics).

Quentin Tarantino named Tangled as one of his top five favorite films of 2010.

  • best transformation ever. Except the part where Prince Adam turns around as a human. -_-

  • Don Hahn is so YOUNG in this...i just saw him last year...he has white hair...and is still a giant.

  • What blows me away every time is the sculptural feel of the pencil drawings. Like the hand looking like it could be a 3-dimensional object trapped in a pencil line and shading.

I think the reason the Prince looks better here is due to the added shading, something you can't get in the final clean line work.

I know when I've done some drawings showing roughs and finals, some have said, 'your roughs looked so much better. They had more personality.' Of course, I wanted to draw like Glen.

  • I am so sad Disney is not like this anymore.

  • @InuKH2Sammy You must see Tangled! It is artistically Outstanding!

Nice songs (I See The Light)

Nice Score by Oscar-winner Alan Menken!

    Incredible animation!

    Beautiful backgrounds!

And Glen Keane is Executive Producer! ;)

  • Glen Keane is a pioneer in animation hands down

  • The prince looks hotter in this sketch. :DD

  • I am very excited about this Disney's project (The Snow Queen is scheduled to 2013). Because it has some people that worked in other great Disney animations:

Written by Linda Woolverton (Beauty and the Beast, Lion King)

Produced by Don Hahn (Beauty and the Beast, Lion King)

Score composer Alan Menken (Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin)

    Directed by Kevin Lima (Tarzan)

Btw, The Snow Queen is a fairytale created by the danish Hans Christian Andersen (The L. Mermaid)!

  • The pencil work on Beast/Adam is so beautiful!!

  • i cried. im sry im an animation major and this just happens to be one of the most beautiful movies ive ever seen in my life. its because of things like this that im going to school for animation.

  • Man, it's really something when just the sketches can bring tears to your eyes. Aaaaaahhhhh oienfw amazing. Really powerful scene. When yer a kid, you don't think about all the work and time put into it. I can hardly believe one person did all that. (Well, a bit of Belle's animator, too.)

  • Comment removed

  • this is when animation becomes art:')

  • i cudnt agree more

  • I don't care if this is supposed to be a kids movie, that animation was beautiful. I can only hope to be able to put so much passion into my art one day.

  • porca miseria che darei per animare così!!!

  • Woow that's so perfectely great! this is soooooooo much better than the thos ridicullusely 3d movies they make these day's. to draw like that, you can almost touch it. its undiscribable

  • @RyanneLove I personally think that's a very harsh statement there "ridiculous 3D movies" Glenn Keane worked on the 3D Animation Tangled, which has some of the most smoothest and beautiful animation to date. Pixar has a long list of well made, well animated and brilliantly written films. I agree that 2D has a better charm and love, but to say 3D movies is ridiculous is just wrong.

  • so in a scene like this, would glen keane animate both belle and the beast?

  • Different characters, and especially main ones, are assigned to different supervising animators. Belle's was James Baxter. Glen is notorious for hard pencil lines in his roughs, while James draws light, and you can see that difference in most of these scenes. The only exception seems to be during the kiss scene, where they are definitely both being drawn together (tee-hee!), and it's very clearly Glen's style.

  • it all just looks so much prettier in sketch form. What an amazing animator and artist.

  • This actually brought tears to my eyes... I'm deadly serious. All that work, all that effort, so much talent... it's just incredible. Plus, the human prince looks so much more gorgeous as one of Glen's pencil sketches for some reason XD

  • Yes, totally beautiful and incredible. Even it's not cleaned up animation in this video I almost cried. I wish I could do draw like him. My own animations are shitty.

  • if you practice, esp with figure drawing, you're bound to do better. you'll be able to sense it

  • wow...That was AMAZING.

  • Watching this practically made me cry. It certainly took my breath away. You can see such passion in the raw sketches that it makes the whole scene that much more epic and amazing.

  • What amazing work!

  • can you imagine having all that talent???? ugh, glen...so good...

  • amazing. my fav disney movie by far, this was a treat.

  • This movie should receive the best picture award!!!

  • It almost won Best Picture at the Oscars that year.

I'm glad Frank Thomas and Ollie Johnston lived long enough to see this.

  • Yeah to Glen Keane, one of my favorite artists for the great animation he did! I love the way how the scene came out from the movie. The transformation scene from the movie is my favorite part since then. It's a good thing Glen design the human form of the Beast before he animated Tarzan from the title movie. For the record, I instantly fell in love with the prince's human form. ^^

  • this had such emotion and passion this is the greatest animated sequence i have seen by far and amen binxOr

  • Comment removed

  • I loved this scence but I HATE how fugly the beast looks in human form, I will say with all honesty I think his beast form was much better looking

  • i think a lot of it has to do with the voice. his human voice was soooo feminine and the beast's was like, rugged and deep. i think it was unfortunate casting *shrug*

  • You know it´s the same actor, right? They just put an effect over it...

  • i actually had no idea... weird, i still wish they'd chosen a different voice :P

  • What a gorgeous scene, my personal favorite is the fight with the wolves, i guess its the way the music and animation flow, its a very powerful sequence.

  • wow

    i can only say:

    wow

    and one last thing:

    wooooooooooooow

  • Oh my gosh, I have to go watch this movie now.

  • Simply art at its best, and i am proud to say im doing animation now for college.

  • I agree!

It must be tough for Glen to draw that transformation scene. I don't think I can do that; especially the part where his face slowly changes from hair into skin.

  • In the end Glen did a great job, makes me jealous how good he can be lol

  • Anyone who says movies like this are 'just cartoons' can eat me!

  • CRAZY GOOD!!!!11

  • I think the most visually pleasing part of this sequence is when Beast is being lowered back to the ground and he is lying in his cape. It looks beautiful. ^.^

  • Glen Keane did such a beautiful job animating the beast in this film. :*)

  • first in the pencil test, i was confused but then glene keane drew the key poses in the pencil test then it shows key poses during the pencil test, so that is why you draw some silhouettes before the key poses are ready to be drawn without using silhouettes.

  • Also, you can totally see Michelangelo's influence in the imagery. I love it.

  • Ohhh gawd, the shot with the hand is simply incredible.

I think this is probably one of the most powerful scenes in animation history.

  • BEAUTIFUL BEAUTIFUL BEAUTIFUL! No other way to put it :)

  • 2-d animation is coming back in THE PRINCESS AND THE FROG !!!!!!!!!! IN 2009

    SPAZZZZZZZZZZ

  • Indeed! I pray that The Frog Princess brings Disney back into another golden era =) Like the one seen in the late 1980s through mid 1990s... with Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King, The Little Mermaid... etc. I hope that they return to their roots with classic stories and 2-d animation <3

  • absolutly amazing, thank you :)

  • this is simply awesome, thnks for sharing

  • You know, some of Pixar's animators were 2D animators including John Lasseter. Atleast Pixar doesn't overexaggerate their animation. Most other CG films have that kind of bulgy, non-realistic thing going, but Pixar takes their time.I stil miss 2D animation, but let Pixar do what they do. They're the ones who DON'T desrve criticism!

  • i agree with u all the way. i love pixar but 2D animation is still great to me. they have the greatest animators in the world and Glen is amazing.(:

  • Damn. Glen Keane is a god. I love how he draws eyes; they have such a realism to them and it makes those features stand out on the characters.

  • Disney magic at its finest. I greatly admire Glen Keane's superb artwork. :DDD

Get back to 2D! CGI isn't what we want!

  • CG, 2D its all Art. Both can co-exist. Pixar does amazing movies, you can't deny that. Disney needs to concentrate on better stories. It's like telling DaVinci and Michelangelo, get back to drawing with paint, sculptures isn't what we want.

  • Yeah I forgot about Pixar and Blue Sky. they're actually prettyy good at what they do, But Disney made better movies when it came to traditional animation...

  • Glen Keane is a genius. He animated the beast in such a way that he looked fearsome but also had such kindness in his eyes.He also animated Tarzan. Its so sad that epic films like Beauty and the Beast and the Lion King have been replaced by CGI

  • OMG! Glen Keane is one of my favorite animators. His animation of the Beast made me cry because of how he brought the character to life. This sequence is probably the best one he's ever done. I love it!!!!

  • It's amazing, I just realized how the prince's proportions are like Michaelangelo's Adam. He is truly a master! *sighs* traditional animation can't be dead! *whines* It can't. *sniffle*

  • look in you tube: teaser de serie "Villstress" de renaud armanet.

  • Its just awesome how they could animate their Hair and how the clothes interact with each other.

  • i love how you could tell, even in rough form, that different animators were working on this

  • Yea, but Glen Keane did all of The Beast-which as awesome. Someone else did Belle. For the Transformation, Glen Keane did all that.

  • gorgeous

  • This is a beautiful scene! All the details in the hand and feet and the Prince's face! And how they make the cloaks move with the swirling wind! It's just amazing! It surprises me how lightly Belle is drawn, but still, she turns out beautiful in the movie! Wonderful, 5 stars!

  • Belle is drawn lightly because Keane is focusing on Beast, Belle is someone else's responsibility

  • Oh, I understand.

  • Glen Kane is amazing. he did Ariel, The beast, Aladdin and pokahontas!!!

  • Mr Keane is without doubt the best. But why, oh, why did beautiful Beast have to turn into that ugly man?! Poor kid...

  • ... huh? O_o

  • I could not agree more. That wonderfully lovely beast then become a stupid, ugly "prettyboy" prince, whereas he was totally much cooler as a beast.

I will not deny that the animation in this is done really amazing, I just think the Beast is far better looking than the prince.

Then again as a guy I might not know very well. I don't like how the voice of the prince sounds on him though either in the movie.

  • Did you notice how, when the last scene turns into a glass mosaic, his nose is given its own triangular piece of glass?

    Bignose.

  • It's just like the scarecrow in 'Howl's moving castle'.

  • Omg I don't think I could ever do something as amazing as this.

  • Wait a minute... did Glen do the Wolf attack?

  • I think he did all the parts with beast..well except the inbetween animation.

  • Hey, jurgenr, I don't know if you can read, but the title of the show is "The Transformation". That is the point of this scene. If you want to watch the beast die, you can press the magical "stop" button whenever you want. I'm sorry you like to make kids sad, but don't rap on disney. sheesh!

  • OMG that is wonderful!! Thank you for the vid, this is very inspiring!!

  • Amazing Work here! Favorite Keane scene, second to the Wolf Attack, third is the Bear from FATH

  • the story should have ended at 2.40, not the gappy end, buth i know its disney:)cant let the kids be sad, i just always wanted this movie to end with the deathscene

  • Wow, 2d is pretty amazing.

I hope they make more 2D in the future

  • I miss soooo much 2D animation, I hate 3D animation... but I think Disney will come back to 2D after 'The Princess and The Frog', I hope this movie make a big success and make Disney earn very money, maybe this can motivate them to make 2D animated movies again.

    I wanna be a Disney animator =/

  • 3D doesnt suck that bad, actually you can creat aweseome stuff and there are some things you cant even do with 2d but you can with 3d never the less I love 2D too :)

  • Go 2-D- it's the best. no wonder everyone always thinks of the classics like little mermaid, beauty and the beast, aladdin, cinderella, snow white ect. beacause IT'S THE BEST!!! the new stuffs ok but the other is much better. I think they could use the computor for special effects but thats IT!! this video is awsome!

  • This is such a wonderful scene. Every frame is pure magic! One of my absolute favs! I wore out my tape watching it over and over! :)

  • [[cries]] NOOOOOO Traditional cell art is gone! Gone! Gone! Hayao Miyazaki is our only hope!

  • Sigh.......I wish Disney would stick with their 2-D.

  • yeah and why they stop singing in disney movies i liked it so mutch. Beauty and the beast and ariel great movies Tarzan i like also.Brother Bear was very funny but not so strong like the others. And Nemo was the only good 3d movie. a Mulan great too. I have a idea for the next disney movie Monkey King thats a movie what disney must do

  • Damn I can still remember how I hate the way he looked as human, I still like him better as the beast ^.^;

  • *sob* I love this aprty. :'(

Wonderful stuff is right there, you know.

  • i think that the old 2D animation is so much better than all this computer and cgi stuff, i guess im a sucker for old disney classics, Beauty and the Beast and The Lion King are my favorites. I think that just because we have more technology doesn't have to mean that we can no longer animate stuff with pencils and paper. In my opinion, 2D animated movies are so much better.

  • No, I totally agree. And I thought I was the only one...

  • I haven't seen that movie in such a long time

  • This is almost better than the actaul animated movie. . .beauty and the beast is one of my all time favs!

  • beautiful!!! :)♥

  • this is the shit i consider srt photoshop is pretty and all the other computer stuff ppl do it nice but any computer geek can do thtthey don need a talent now this THIS is art i love this especially the hand part where the beast hand turns into the human one also the close up of the face as many ppl already said ikm a yound artist and ppl say im very talented for my age if i ever make a movie this is what id do! FRO SURE!

  • I love the shot of the prince's face up close, it's absolutely beautiful. i wish we could revert back to cel animation but computers are taking over...i want to work for disney someday and do this!

  • Disney are going back to hand drawn 2D :D I want to work for Disney too.

  • they are?! yayyyy.

  • Outstanding job. He seems to give an added level to his animations. It's as though there is more emotion visible in his characters, their facial features are much more expressive - even the subtle ways he animates their body language. It's that attention to detail that really sets his work apart from other artists. Seeing the sketch work on this, rather than the finished piece, makes me appreciate the work that went into it that much more. Sorry to gush, but "WOW" didn't seem to say enough.

  • Amazing, the same guy who does "Family Circus" He's just playin' around when he does those comics...that man is a gifted artists.

  • Actually, it's Bill Keane, Glen's father.

  • GLEAN KEANE IS MY HERO!!!

  • Absolutely amazing!!!

  • absolutely gorgeous animation. Glen Keane really knows his stuff <3

  • >SPEECHLESS< ART FOR ARTS SAKE!

  • Same as Ken24life

    lol, poor guy

  • Truely a masterful piece of animation.

  • Refering to sebhary's comment--It's a shame 2d is thought to be just 99999 times better than 3d rather than infinity, a misconception in a pandemic scale- 3d is a completely different art-form that humbly derived from 2d as opposed to a replacement(irrespective that most people believe so).

  • I truely agree with what you said. However, I don't think people really believed that 3d was replacing 2d. Its just these suits in high chairs are telling people what to think. Well, I'm glad to say that most of the people i talk with, disney fans or not, still love 2d animation. Its just that there hasn't been one worthy of watching since The Lion King.

  • Absolutely! I dont think it's easily relinquished the interest in 2d, respective of it being the template and standard in which most great 3d animations are based. Most animators still cosistently task the techniques and methods poineered over sixty years ago by disney and this team. For an animator it's wholly integral that they be able to draw not push a left-mouse button only, 3d is a meer complementary continuation of the magic Disney intended. An intuitive alternative.

  • I agree. I want to go into animation and become an artist, but it ticks me off how people seem to forget that it takes talent with a hand and pencil to lead up to a hand and a mouse >.<.

  • Great shit!I pitty th efool who has to clean it up though! And do th ein betweens

  • I'd gladly do the inbetweens for Mr. Keane!!! No Problem!

  • glen kean is a god!! tears like Isaia...

(why today disney doesn't have animators like him?

    3D sucks! 2D it's 99999 better!)

  • I know!!! We belong to the OLD generation lol

  • OMG.........................

    Tears in my eyes. Dayum
