ive got a pentium 2 that runs ubuntu. 400MHz and 32mb of ram. i was only 10 at the time i installed it, and i kindof forgot to check system requirements... but now im 12. hehe, my parents still use it because their other one mysteriously broke...
The problems is your Videocard, try change it.. i use a Voodoo 3 3000 AGP and runs perfectly XUBUNTU on Pcchips M748LM and M748LMRT and Soyo Sy-6BB ...
Hmmm, I've got Pii 350mhz 210Mem... so.. I run Xubuntu.., In beginngin i had problem with monitor too small.., so, i've got now bigger monitor and a better one.. It's betters...:-)
My videocard is a voodoo family.. Diamond MonsterFusion 16MB ... old one..
That looks like a Gateway G6-350.

You should try Xubuntu not Ubuntu. Xubuntu is especially designed for older machines.

FreeBSD would work.
Or you could try the Netbook addition... my guess is you'll have to put more memory in it to run Ubuntu on that, though.

Ubuntu is overly bloated. I suggest Debian GNU/Linux Woody. Would be great for a closet server or something.

I recommend you to use some lighter distro such as zenwalk, vector, puppy linux, grafpup, pcfluxboxOS, damn small linux, deLi, slitaz, etc
Ubuntu is way to heavy for that... I guess you have discovered it already.

I had similar problems with some odd video cards you can either just use the VESA driver or just go buy a $10 ATI or nvidia card off ebay.
