To brother aznlyrickz, please if you do not mind let's me correct you- It' was Thailand use to be part of Laos, not Laos use to be part of Thailand. It was the colonial France gave Part of Laos to Thailand (Siam) as recently as mid 1800's.

fomga you got your history backward. over 1000 years ago it was just Khmer. Laos is part of the Angkor empire, just as Thailand and parts of Vietnam was part of Khmer also. You can still see Khmer temples remaining in Laos, Thai and Vietnam.

The Khmer were in Southeast before the Tai migration. It had been due to the pressure migration southward collapsed the empire into different countries, Laos and Thailand, which were called differently in those times.

no, lao and thai are similar because they are tonal languages and are of the same origin even in writing. Lao could be said the simplified version of thai. khmer is very different some of the words used in khmer might be the same as thai or lao but because khmer is not tonal it is hard to tell. khmer writing and speaking is just too different and neither lao/thai would be able to understand.
