I have heard your affected music, and peered at your face behind a fog. It is good to hear you and see you, in an honest manner. Your essence is lovely and deserves to shine in the open. What a beautiful crowd there is, looking at you, with open eyes.
He seems like he's a little puffed up on pitchfork reviews, but he's still got an arguably unique and interesting sound. I would not be able to sit through one of his shows though. I think he'd be great if he did more dj sets with some of his more dubsteppy stuff.
@ChopperJohn4 agree. he is clearly talented, but id love much more to see him at the turntables live. i have a couple of his recorded sets and his selection is top notch
I was there and it was definitely an amazing performance. As someone who lives in Austin however I have to admit that yes, the SXSW crowd is generally one of the most self absorbed, annoying groups of people I've seen. I happily anticipate and dread the festival happening each year.
Someone told me to check this guy out because he had a super-original sound. I disagree. This song sounds like a run-of-the-mill R&B song from the likes of Luther Vandross. I'm not saying that he's not talented, because he does have a really nice voice, but I'm not seeing what's so original and exciting about this dude. Just re-hashing crooning R&B songs.
@ppec314 i completely understand where you are coming from with that opinion, but I also disagree. i would say the beginning of the song, yes. the intimacy of it, with blake's voice firmly the focal point of the song, definitely rings true to typical r & b. but this song develops into something else, the instrumentation, little by little, starts taking over blake's voice. it isn't at the center anymore, it is competing with everything else. plus the backing music sounds nothing like r & b.
I really like James Blake and this was a great performance of this song, but @ppec314, you cannot use the term "run-of-the-mill" in relation to Luther Vandross. GTFOH with that noise.
I really don`t get this guy`s musical appeal. Sure, he`s handsome, but I listened to his self titled album thinking "what`s the big deal?". Somebody needs to explain his appeal to me
@solidnadz He has an incredible ear for sound manipulation. If you listen closely to his cd, you notice that every little sound on it has been produced with such a profound sense of detail that it becomes a delight to listen to. On top of that he has a good voice with a pleasant timbre. I know that most of the above is a personal opinion, so take it with a grain of salt, but this is why I belief he is more than just another good looking chap trying to make it.
Aww, i want to be a hipster who goes to these gigs, with ironic t-shirts, bad facial hair, over-sized ray-bans, who talks about their band/screenplay all day long while sipping lattes.
@trumpet90909 But nay, you are rather confined to the darkness of your bedroom, watching youtube videos all day, negatively commenting on people who look and act differently than you.
@vivalaiver09 Touche, almost. Instead I'm working hard, brushing up, not living off my parents like them, and running a multi-national company. Like I said, it must be hard mooching off handouts your life.
no one is enjoying this performance at all. most are just trying to 'capture' the moment. don't any of these hipsters know that a camera takes you out of the moment?
@NickKentucky I feel ya... @3:59 sunglass, headband, hanky around yer neck, shit in diaper, and you're not in williamsburg? WTF dude. go die!!! I never want to go there now. Isnt it in Texas? why the fuck is that girl wearuing a winter hat?
@ledepotesta No. My comment is not in re: to lack of response & movement in the crowd. Rather, it is a comment on the type of people who frequent SXSW. Those types being PBR pounding, ironic facial hair wearing, culture-less asshats who lap up anything Pitchfork deem worthy of a 7.3 on their richter-o-pretension. The same hedonist-hipsters that ruin all great shows with their bullshit "all about me" attitude. They are like hippies without a cause, unless you consider wearing Toms as sufficient.
The song has a subtle yet clear groove stated in the vocal refrain by a device one might call a rhythmic hook. I would say the groove "swings" on this phrase and its creation and release of tension. The singer develops, deepens and then almost obscures this temporal fulcrum with each iteration of the refrain. The kids in the audience are anticipating and reacting to the singer's delivery, some of them with more success than others. Why insult them?
hipster? how so? this guy is huuuge in england, and, like it says in the description box, this is one of his first shows in the states. i don't see how this is 'hip', it's just a great song.
Watch a Pre-January 8th copy of Inception. Listen closely when the actors say imagine, reality, safe, and envelope, or point pistols. You'll hear the words, Loughner, offin' her, part of the word Giffords, and much more. Some even say the hear them saying do it.
@leesaall shut the fuck up! why there has to always be a dude who has to talk shit about crowd? were they supposed to headbang in front of the stage? fucking idiot.
There is a subtle, yet clear groove, more of a rhythmic hook really, stated by the vocal refrain, that establishes more deeply as the song progresses. It swings on you saud it -Right - that phrase. It's a pickup phrase just after the four. That's what the kids are bobbing their heads to. Some with more visible success than others. Do not begruge them their pleasure.
Fucking SXSW...all of the musicians...even the lesser known ones get laid by smoking hot 10s...(I know James Blake is pretty well known, just stating that he and every other musician in town is going to get their dick/vagina wet)
