The only explanation to such is the rotation of the earth and the Coriolis Effect but these whirlpools are not wide enough in radius to be affected by it. It's cool to think of it as an omen, though.

A Maelstrom *IS* a whirlpool, you are thinking of a Vortex, which is a different kind of whirlpool, and rare in nature. (common in kitchen sinks though)
