That's so cute! :3 I love otters <3. Shame that the parents of those kids wouldn't teach said kids to be considerate to both the otters and the other zoo visitors. They are awfully loud, like they think they can't be heard unless they scream o_O
last time i went to the Philadelphia Zoo these giant amazon river otters were my favorite exhibit. they really interact with the visitors like they are watching you as much as you are them. i love these things now i want to go back.
Hi Andrew, I'm a volunteer with the Vancouver Aquarium and they offer tons of opportunities to interact, including the Sea Otter and Sea Lion Trainer Tours. Check out the ottercam at the vanaqua dot org site (home of the the famous Otters Holding Hands vid) - Good luck, ChrisB
Whohaha? The Vanaqua sea otters are *so* cute. Check out my footage at the head of "Otter, Belugas & Jellies! Oh My!" It's too long, I know, but may give you an idea of some of the variety of life in our oceans.
To those who say that it is cruel to have these animals in captivity and claim that zoo's mistreat their animals, I would like to point out that these animals live in a world where there are no predators, there is plenty of food that is just given to them without hunting, and any illnesses they have can be treated.
I must say that mainly do to animal rights activists, zoo's are making huge improvements and enlarging their captive worlds. For the visitors, the swan boats were great, but the camel ride might have been fun for the one time rider but the camels went in circles all day. I also am aware the a camel is ok in the hot sun but ponies were in the same conditions for hours. Oh, the bleach smell from the otters water was overwhelming!
I am no animal activist but if you put me in a restricted area where I did not have to fear predators, gave me all the food I wanted, and treated all my illness', I would still be unhappy. You would too. We, as living creatures, need the freedom to come and go as we please.
Folks, the kids banging on the glass and speaking loudly will not influence those otters one bit. Just the fact that the water comes up past the glass so much tells me that it is thick enough to hold the pressure. I'm guessing its nearly 2 inches of solid glass.
There is much engineering and design put into modern zoo exhibits, and the number one customer of any zoo is the family. They know that kids will be loud and unruly.
I realize that the otters were ok with the noise but it would be nice if parents would watch and teach their kids to respect wildlife. It is a great place for that and it's ashame they ignore that opportunity. They did rope off the tiger glass area!
stupid kids.. its so disgusting how zoos and other places with captive animals allow people to mistreat the animals like that. people ought to teach kids when they're young about animals and how to act kindly around them so when they grow up, they arent just another human being that doesnt understand that they r living creatures and not toys to b played with and mistreated
It looked like they were encouraging him to dive under with them. They brought him up to the surface too. Probably how they teach them to be efficient swimmers. Remember if they were in the wild its swim well or die!
unfortunately, most parents don't control their kids! I wish the zoo would monitor their animals more closely and parents realize that their noisy, out of control, kids are taking enjoyment of such an experience from others, not to mention abusing animals that are captive! I was however, exciting to see how the otters take care of each other!!!! Holly
god i know! (about parents and kids) unfortunately i was one of those kids but i tapped in the grass i didnt bang against it...thy should have a no peolpe zone (3 feet preventing kids to not hit the glass) and a quiet zone where people who are quiet can go and see the animals and all the other little kids and parents can go somewhere else!
Cute, but it's so sad that kids are speaking so loudly and hitting on the glass. Shouldn't be allowed. I wouldn't allow my kids to act that way around animals!
It looked a little bit like they were trying to eat it lol

Is this the normal way that otters in the wild would teach their pups to swim? It looks so aggressive and dangerous to the baby.

it looks more as if the otters want to eat the baby otter....

I remember the traditional zoos as a child, with animals pacing back and forth endlessly in their rectangular metal barred cement cages.
It's horrible to think about the conditions then, and where they still persist now.
