Dee Dee sang the middle harmonies. Dick sang falsetto up top and baritone below. Dee Dee sang two middle parts - they were a four-part vocal duet on the records. Live they sang two parts and nobody noticed.
I remember hearing this song on WKY, in Oklahoma City, at the same time the tornado sirens were going off in Norman, Oklahoma. Dad turned the radio off and off to the shelter we went. Strange how certain songs bring back certain memories. The sense of urgency in the song and the sense of urgency in a tornado warning siren and my parents eyes........
"The Mountain's High " by Dick and Deedee is like "Sally Go round the Roses" by the Jaynettes. Both are haunting, estatic, and truly original works of art.
This Duo was a flash in the pan, but left thier mark on the Pop Scene for sure!!!!!! Your right the Albums back then are scarce, most people bought the 45 record not the album.
every saturday wake up to cartoons, midday Werterns and evening..sci fi..dracula, wolfman, later that night..UFO movies..then bed. listening to music played in a bar just below my apartment. drifting off to sleep. If i could be a child again. it would have to be 1960 to 1966. the music was out of this world lol..no pun intended.
this is SO early sixties..in nyc. 1960-1963 the sound is a reflections of the times..Kennedy in the white house..sci fi movies on tv. block parties..the worlds fair, transistor radios, record players that look like suitcases..elementary school, long hot summers..and being a Real kid. today kids dont know how to be kids..all the innocence is Gone. I would gladly go back to 1961-1963..the 00s (today) suck..especially the music.
Thats right. Every week a new great single, new girl in school to fantasize about.. Everything in the world is a new adventure. New trends and eperiences to look forward to. hopes and dreams for the future! I'd give a million to go back.
Smokey wrote the one who really loves you for mary wells..somewhere in 61 but released in 62. put my money that this is a burrow from the one who really loves you. purely a guess..i love both versions tho..what memories..the sounds of the early sixtes.
wonderful song!!!! has anyone noticed that the chord progression in the first part of the song is almost identical to the great Mary Wells song "The One Who Really Loves You"? Which came first? Love them both.
Thanks for posting this oldie but goodie. I didn't reach my teen years until 1963, but enjoyed, and still do enjoy, many of the late 50s/early 60s hits more so than ones on the charts during my mid to late teen years.
This may be the best of many songs that spanned rock, R&B and country (think of "River Deep, Mountain High," "Ain't No Mountain High Enough," "Wolverton Mountain")
that have to do with unrequited love over unspoken boundaries (class, race, the Hatfields & the McCoys???? You get the idea).
I am reluctant to rate this over Marvin & Tammi's record, but the bizarre arrangement sets this in a class apart. BTW I'm LOVING this LP. Thanks for posting.
Love this comment, ptownfreddy - and couldn't agree more. Don't forget Harold Dorman's classic "Mountain of Love" too. But yes, this one is extraordinary for the soaring vocals and sheer emotional power - in a class by itself.
"The Mountain's High" is very dear to me. It was the first album I ever bought and my favorite song throughout grammar school in the earl'60s. Great nostalgia. Thanks for the post.
This is great stuff. I've had this song (Mountains High) stuck in my head forever and couldn't find who did it. The other songs are good too. Thanks for posting!
Surprised nobody wrote about this song. Great song!!!

I don't understand why some songs such as Moutains High, which were hugely popular, have always been ignored by the "oldie" radio stations.

Dee Dee didn't really sing these songs on the record albums. Dick sang his own harmony in falsetto!

Dee Dee was always a sweetheart with a big smile and kind to a fault. I remember, well, 1961 and this song playing on KFWB/AM in Los Angeles.

If You Want My Lovin" sounds so edgy even today. Someone like the Raveonettes should cover it. It could be a smash.

Good comment. I was thinking the same about Chubby Checker's "Lovely Lovely". Let me know if something happens, I don't follow current radio.

From the info box, GeoSilverAway asks
"Tell me Dee Dee, why is your name usually spelled as two words?"
Obviously, because her real name is Mary. ;- >
