Besides are all music artists necessarily professional dancers? I don't think so. What are they going to do in their music videos or live performances? Just stand there and sing or sit on a chair? That would not be a very entertaining concert, dancing is part of the show.
The way I see it her dancing is a plus, remember she is first and foremost a singer and song writer then a dancing performer. You got to admit she does give good shows. There is no need to argue about this. I am a belly dance student and now have noticed Shakira is not really a professional belly dancer but does it to enhance the performance. There is nothing wrong with performing and not being a professional belly dancer as long as that is not your main talent. :)

Thanks...you're right....her father is from Lebanon and her mother has spanish blood and she grew up in Colombia. So she has arab and latin roots. Either way, I like her and kudos to her for all her accomplishments.
Um Kalthoum is unique. There will never be another like her. Only those who understand middle-eastern classical music can really appreciate her greatness.

Como colombiana y bailarina: Las que nos dedicamos a esto sabemos que shakira es solo show y nada de sentimiento. Su baile es brusco y no se por que me siento ofendida en que se atreva a incorporar una cancion como "Enta Omri", semejante clasico egipcio, en uno de sus presentaciones totalmente fuera de contexto. Todo el mundo es libre de hacer lo que quiera pero ofende que ella pretenda ser la gran bailarina que no es, alimentando la imagen burda que las profesionales intenta nsuperar.

Si, incluso yo conoci la danza arabe por ella, pero cuando empece a bailar me di cuenta que es un cuento totalmente diferente al que ella representa. A mi no me importa si ella baila bien o no, el problema es que haciendo la danza representa a todo un gremio de bailarinas que hemos estado luchando contra la imagen facilona/sexual y amateur de la danza......ella esta en el bando que nos hace quedar mal......... The only reason I even watched this was because I was researching anyone who dared dance to any Oum Khalthoum music. Defending Oum Khalthoum? Nope, don't need to, her reputation is locked up tight. Shakira's? Mish ketir.

That's a generalization. I am a huge Shakira fan, and I have over 160 versions of Ojos Asi. However, I do not think that Shakira is the best bellydancer of all time. Do I think she's a good one? Yes. But again, not the best.
The people saying she is THE best are actually small in number - videos like these simply draw them for some reason. But Shakira fan communities such as Shakiraholics and Shakiramedia never have people claiming she is the best bellydancer of all time.

I just watched the whole vid. Many of her movements are vulgar by Mid East standards. Sometimes she is technically correct, but many times not so much.
I'll give her credit for being able to sing and "dance" at the same time, but that's it.

Mediocre brand of pop music?! Shakira used Enta Omri as an introduction to a song of hers that is quite Arabian-influenced itself, called "Ojos Asi". Find a video of this entire performance and not just this intro. Ojos Asi is a brilliant song with stunnning, poetic lyrics. Not just a pop song.

Thanks...you're right....her father is from Lebanon and her mother has spanish blood and she grew up in Colombia. So she has arab and latin roots. Either way, I like her and kudos to her for all her accomplishments.

Como colombiana y bailarina: Las que nos dedicamos a esto sabemos que shakira es solo show y nada de sentimiento. Su baile es brusco y no se por que me siento ofendida en que se atreva a incorporar una cancion como "Enta Omri", semejante clasico egipcio, en uno de sus presentaciones totalmente fuera de contexto. Todo el mundo es libre de hacer lo que quiera pero ofende que ella pretenda ser la gran bailarina que no es, alimentando la imagen burda que las profesionales intenta nsuperar.

If you think um kalthum is overrated then you are clueless about middle-eastern music. It's like saying Santana is overrated, or Jimmy Hendrix is an overrated guitarist. You need to know what you're talking about to criticise someone like Um Kalthum. She is unique and beyond comparison.

Si, incluso yo conoci la danza arabe por ella, pero cuando empece a bailar me di cuenta que es un cuento totalmente diferente al que ella representa. A mi no me importa si ella baila bien o no, el problema es que haciendo la danza representa a todo un gremio de bailarinas que hemos estado luchando contra la imagen facilona/sexual y amateur de la danza......ella esta en el bando que nos hace quedar mal......... Cada una es libre de hacer lo que le plasca......pero ella nos sabotea el camino.....

qualquier chica de nivel medio-avanzado en tu escuela de bellydance más cercano sabe bailar igual que ella, por eso la critican, por que no es rachel brice o Sadie, aunque la envidia se basa en esto: Ella es famosa y gana mucho dinero por hacer algo que puedes encontrar en cualquier libanés + cantar a su estilo... que por cierto su voz no me gusta porque parece de oca, pero esto ya es otro tema. That's a generalization. I am a huge Shakira fan, and I have over 160 versions of Ojos Asi. However, I do not think that Shakira is the best bellydancer of all time. Do I think she's a good one? Yes. But again, not the best.
The people saying she is THE best are actually small in number - videos like these simply draw them for some reason. But Shakira fan communities such as Shakiraholics and Shakiramedia never have people claiming she is the best bellydancer of all time.

I actually agree, some of them are acting quite immmature. Many people love Shakira and relate to her music and find it as an escape from problems. Perhaps they are simply defending that.
Don't get a generalized view of Shakira fans, though. As a Star Wars fan, I get plenty of generalization, and it isn't fair. Again, the Shakira fan message boards are a lot more calm than this.
I, for one, respect your opinion. May I ask what you though of the actual song (assuming you listened to it)?

I just watched the whole vid. Many of her movements are vulgar by Mid East standards. Sometimes she is technically correct, but many times not so much.
I'll give her credit for being able to sing and "dance" at the same time, but that's it.

Obviously a lot of people care, sandy. If her audience is stupid enough to believe that she is a great bellydancer that's their problem. If she were a great bellydancer, she wouldn't need a choreographer, she would know how to use a veil and she would know better than to commercialize on Oum Khalthoum by using it as an intro to her own mediocre brand of pop music.

Mediocre brand of pop music?! Shakira used Enta Omri as an introduction to a song of hers that is quite Arabian-influenced itself, called "Ojos Asi". Find a video of this entire performance and not just this intro. Ojos Asi is a brilliant song with stunnning, poetic lyrics. Not just a pop song.

In addition, any dancer that takes on Oum Khalthoum and doesn't know what it's about...will be shredded by any Egyptians. Her music is not just about how it makes you feel, you better know the words. You must be able to emote her music or your dead as a bellydancer. And if you misinterpret it, hope you run fast.
She should not have used this music, it was completely inappropriate for a Shakira concert. My opinion of Shakira does not come into play here. Her lack of respect is astounding.

Wow...you talkin' to everyone with the same opinion as mine,1SHAKISBOY? You and many others here know nothing about Oum Khalthoum and her music. She is/was the VOICE of Egypt and stated that she NEVER wanted ANYONE bellydancing to her music. She only relented once and that was with Zohar Zaki, who was able to interpret the music according to Ms. Khalthoum's standards. Anyone undertaking the challenge of dancing to her music damn well better know it's meaning and Shakira obviously does not.

Estoy totalmente de acuerdo contigo. Shakira se está aprovechando de la fama que tiene ahora la danza del vientre y del trabajo de otras personas que han sabido llevarlo a lo más alto. De todas formas, si va a seguir bailando esto, le aconsejo que se busque una coreógrafa... me da igual que lo baile desde los cuatro años. Cualquier chavala de El Cairo lo hace y no es por eso bailarina. Una bailarina se distingue por su porte y su capacidad interpretativa, no porque sepa menear cuatro figuras.

@nfrcqa Pero no estudio profesionalmente años para ser odalisca. Perfecciono ceirtas tecnicas. Te das cuenta q el baile de ojos asi dle unplugged no es igual al tour de la mangosta. LOs movimietnos de manos y de cadera esta mucho mejor.

Y para q sepas un artista tiene q intentar de todo por más q le salga mal. Así se reinventan como madonna. Si vos sos artista con tu supuesto baile cuando creas rutinas lo tendrias q saber. HAbla mucho de vos eso! aSÍ Q APRENDE UN POCO MÁS Y DEPSUES HABLAMOS.

ENtonces si ella es cantante y se pone a intentar el belyldance que lo haga bien y no lo denigre... y se se pone a bailar bellydance esta sujeta a la critica... La mujer canta bien y es la 3era vez que lo repito... pero su "intento" de belyldance es horroroso, rebaja el arte, solo para vender... Bailando esa cancion con esa cara tan falsa y sus horribles movimientos de velo su "intento" permitime decirte que es super fallido

Shakira did a concert on July 4th, 2008, that used this intro again, except that lyrics from the original song were sung. So she has indeed read the words.

sorry but she's a super pop star, and the world loves her, she is a singer who complements her act with dancing, and she interprets music on her own style using a middleastern basis, so don't judge her like a dancer, beacuse she's a singer first. and when it comes to dance she's above average, she's so sensual and sexy, and she knows what she does.
