@paclivesinalaska The whole thing is... Jimmy had Tony Thompson, and Phil begged Robert (since he was playing drums for Robert during that tour of Plants) and so they end up having 2, and they were off key most of the time. Phil Collins was his own in his own time, with his own style.
I was 19 at this time (now 43) and I had long curly hair (permed) and I totally loved seeing this clip.. not much live footage shown at that time, and Jimmy lived up to all I imagined him to be.. Not just being fucked up here, but the whole package with him playing and his after concert attitude! you are right man.. this is classic!!!

@LivingIn1969 yeah that dumbass reporter does, but i think out of jimmy page robert plant and JPJ, i think john paul jones is defenately the one who is having the most fun right now with his band Them Crooked Vultures.
sorry, forgot it was liveaid, it wasn't so much of a disaster, but they didn't reherse at all and didn't they have 2 drumers? like phil collins and another guy they had never plaid with? so it wasn't so much of a disaster, but Im sure it did inspire them to get together more than they would have.. plant always (even in this interview) talks of "this is it" a "one off" again repeated at O2, "one off" Im tired, not even spelling right
They never reheased with Phil Collins, bhut had that morning with Tony Thompson .. (he toured with Phil and Genesis sometimes)
TT filled the drum seat at a rehearsal in the late 80's with Plant, Page and JPJ ... they rehearsed in a small church hall to see if there was any magic there .. unfortunately TT was in a car accident that brought the rehearsals to a halt, Page said it wasnt to be so they never got together again.
My memory of Live Aid, is Page looking over medicated / bloated in the face, Plant was hoarse as he'd got a cold whilst on tour, Paul Martinez playing bass on Stairway was appauling, and Page's guitar was hopelessly out of tune for Rock N Roll ... still I loved every second of it .. especially when Plant looked affectionately at Page during Stairway. .. an overused phrase these days, but these guys were LEGENDS.
24 years ago ... shame it was such a disaster, but still great to see ... wish i could have seen them in their day. funny JPJ getting ignored by the interviewer .. probably hasnt got a clue who he is.
It wasn't so much a disaster if you listen carefully, Page was perfect as always, They went on WAY later than they were supposed to, and they had technical troulbe. so in a way it was... Hit the nail on the head, JPJ never got his share of the credit
guy at the back Paul Martinez who was playing bass for Plant at the time......his bass can be heard destroying Stairway on the VHS copy i have from the day...something for him to show the grandkids...the day i ballsed up Stairway in front of a billion people hahaha
yes.. tha was very good.. I have many of his solo stuff. found some bootlegs as well, crackback is one song you could rank him on.. that driving bass line that goes up and down, he plays it like eddie van halen plays his guitar.
JPJ is shy; he rarely speaks up up unless first spoken to. The last time he did was to ask to join JP's new post-Yardbirds project, and that was only after Mrs. JPJ put him up to it.
lol poor robert plant trying to explain the fucking abortion that just happend on stage.... hes prob pissed off because mick jagger pulled off a solo spot on live aid
I don't think JPJ, or Robert wanted them to know they rehearsed, due to how poorly they performed, it could be a scapegoat, but Page wanted to get his 2 cents in,, he said.. "Yeah we did, for about a hour and a 1/2" .. JPJ made a great recovery by stating "Very quick.. very fast and furious indeed"
i always wondered if he may had been on cocaine, since he is rubbing his nose much.. I also get a kick out of Phil, when he said "It don't do the things it is suppose to do" and rubs his nose and glances at Page, as if to say the coke was bunk
I agree.. He may have had a few jack and cokes here, but i doubt he was on the hard stuff.. he was doing the firm around this time as well, he may have just been bummed about the performance and got drunk, but that is prolly all!
i would of loved to see what Led Zeppelin would have become in the 80s. They would be cheesy like alot of shit back then but take all the good stuff that was in the 80s. They would still rock and not become Phil Collins
No offense to Mr. Collins but whose bright idea was it to team him up with the remaining members of LZ? There couldn't have been a worse fit. Not that he's solely to blame. No rehearsal + way too much alcohol = shitty performance
its true there their there playing thats what zepp was trying to do and thats ok with me .i think it was a after thought when they relized people were bitching that this isnt 1970's anymore and they cant just show there faces anymore video and audio recoding got alot more detailed
John Paul Jones is just giving Jimmy and Robert a look that says "you drunken fools". Jones is so unappreciated since he was in a band among gods. Kind of like Ringo Starr.
i only read about this interview. I remember being told about this. I happen to have the live aid performance on bootleg video and it is of excellent quality (No interview) but Led Zeppelin thought there performance was so bad it is NOT on the LIVE AID DVD (neither is DURAN DURAN "VIEW TO A KILL" WHERE SIMON HITS A BAD NOTE) but the DVD does have The Who under rehersed "WHO ARE YOU" - I need to go back and re-watch...This interview is transcribed in the book HAMMER OF THE GODS...
phil should have let the drummer that rehersed the gig do it by himself.i believe his name was tony banks, collins should have kept his beasty ego at bay!
They must think the world knows who JPJ is since he's the only one who's name they didn't show.

No offense to Mr. Collins but whose bright idea was it to team him up with the remaining members of LZ? There couldn't have been a worse fit. Not that he's solely to blame. No rehearsal + way too much alcohol = shitty performance

Collins was drummer on Robert Plants Principle of moments LP, and toured with him a few times, and this was shortly after

John Paul Jones was awesome at Bonnaroo. He played with everybody. Plant/Allison Kraus sucked this past year. JPJ definately one hell of a musician.
isrukind1 3 years ago 2
Page should do a solo tour joined with other musicians. Plants being a dick and stopping them from doing one last Led Zeppelin tour.

Robert's ego was huge in this interview. And it continues today.

I agree. Jimmy should've punched him in the face after he said what he said.

John Paul Jones is just giving Jimmy and Robert a look that says "you drunken fools". Jones is so unappreciated since he was in a band among gods. Kind of like Ringo Starr.

Yeah, Jones is so unappreciated. I find him awesome. ^^ at the look... Plant isn't drunk... Looks coked up.

Yes. JPJones remains way too under appreciated.

i only read about this interview.
TEMPmichaelhansen 3 years ago
phil should have let the drummer that rehersed the gig do it by himself.i believe his name was tony banks, collins should have kept his beasty ego at bay!
