  • If cracked said she was a female then he was a female.

  • Billy was known to let it all hangout when he was with his close family. They helped him keep his secret and not one of them gave him away to the press. I believe that Billy had no investment in being female and due to the prejudice in the pro musician world(even today in many cases) against a womans abilities as a "real musician", Billys music made the gender choice for him. Had female musicians not only gotten gigs as all female "novelty acts", Billy would maybe have made a different decision.

  • my grandfather WAS known and and his death only proved how much harder life was back them for a woman to have to pretend to be a man, if any of you really understood how my grandfather lived you would know it was for the pursuit of happiness

  • @beanpole680 well, if HE was your grandfather, he wasn't pretending. He was transgender he was a guy. the end. not pretending.

  • @Manacle180 not biologically but still my grandfather non the less, "she" lived her life as a man and did a very good job at it, was a better man than most real men can take credit for.

  • How did he pass all those years? There weren't many butchies or dykes so maybe no one questioned that he didn't need to shave. How tall was Billy? It helps when they're taller because a 5'0" ft tall cross dresser won't pass very well.

  • @6950062 There were probably more, but you have to remember the times. Even when a young girl became pregnant it was a shame and disgrace and many were sent away to secretly have the baby, orphange, adoption or abortion. Then there were the two WW's where women worked in weapons factories and had the Women's base ball leagues. Imagine all that tapped talent being submerged when the men came back needing jobs and care.

  • @bluekrypton1 Most of all Billy love the music, how many talents are surpressed because of _______. Fill in the blank and gender is not the only one.

  • @bluekrypton1 so true

  • @outsideedgejr female muscians a few come to mind such as Ann and Nancy Wilson , sheryl crow, 3 non blonds, Stevie nicks is still hot too.

  • Good music! But what did Billy do when a date wanted to ride his/her penis?

  • @kapacon he convinced them he had a bad injury downstairs in his nether regions and never got nakie infront of them and his partners loved him enough to forego any wobblies.

  • @OutsideEdgeJr: Okay, thanks for answering. I just love jazz and wondered how this aspect of Billy's life was handled.

  • Halaluani get with the program! It's He, Him, His, now you know.

  • i agree with you both completly. and thanks for the post on a genius in the jazz world there will never be another billy blessings to you both---thanks again..

  • I think of it differently. The only thing people didn't really know was her gender. We're all so much more than our gender. When you really think about it, gender is a tiny part of people. Is there anything about people less significant than gender? I don't think so.

  • @halaluani i agree with you unfortunately alot of professions think gender is ver y important. music is one. if your cute and all lady gaga youre in. if your susan boyle youre laughed at and scorned before you open your mouth. a not very attractive female guitar player, drummer etc, gets no listen. not even a foot thru the door except as a "novelty act". billy wanted to be taken seriously as a jazz musician not as a novelty girl jazz player. i hear ya tho. thanks for the comment

  • @halaluani if we are getting technically with gender then we might as well be saying his gender because he clearly identified that way :)

  • @halaluani the point is "he" became a "he" for his music not cuz of gender dysphoria. we still live in a world where unless you are a particularly good looking woman you dont get gigs and male musicians tend to treat you in a very condisending diragatory demeaning and dismissive way. when will the world get over the novelty of pro musicians who happen to be female AND excellent at their craft???
