Interesting. Could you upgrade the video output to s-video or RGB scart while you were in there? Or is composite yellow plug the best you can get for a MegaDrive?
Really informative video, Damo. I was just wondering what the ceramic cap is for that was sitting above the point where you soldered the factory clock back up. Doesn't look like it was there from the factory.
i only just realised that the 'jap' MD i bought off ebay was actually a PAL asian one, with mod switch to make it 60, so yea.. they basically did somethin like this i think.. lol
Huh?! How come I am lately not getting any of your videos in my sub-box? Damn. I completely missed this one. >.>
Anyway, a very slick video once again, bro. I like how you do things I've always wanted to do, too. Retro consoles are now a thing of the past for me, though. Got other things to waste my money on, lol.
This was an amazing tutorial. How did you ever figure out all the things you needed to do to retore the console? Simply amazing. Do you have computer hardware background?
@segagenesis1989 - Cheers for the kind words mate :) Yeah, I've been a computer tech for 16+ years and have been a security tech for the last 7 years :)
I picked up one of these the other day and it had a loose rf unit in it as well,i couldnt work out where it came from on the board lol, their was hardly any screws in mine either, weird.
That's the neatness job ever done. My PSX wasn't modded that well back in the day. Back to MegaDrive, Mine is the taiwanese/japan model, which can play all regions weirdly enough and plays PAL fine. Still I should test a NTSC game. Overall very nice restoration Damo as always. I would really like to send my Saturn to you, would look awesome with a switch and all.
damn dude that blue reset button actually makes all the difference to the look of that thing compared to that horrible looking faded one. good video too showing others how to convert it back to its former self before some crazy dudes decided to cripple the poor thing haha. thank you for this bro
@WickedClownNZ - Hey no problem mate :) Will be back in the post for ya Monday dude.. And thanks again for sending me the little beasty for me to work on :)
@sithwarrior - Cheers mate, some of the other YouTubers have said there is a real Asian Pal machine, but at least if ya get one of these knock off ones its an easy fix :)
@RetroGameTech - Hey mate, they seem to be quite common around these parts - Some of the other YouTubers have said there are real Asian PAL machines, but at least if ya ever found one of these units you know its an easy fix :) Cheers mate!
@SandyStarchild - The sound from Pin 1 and 8 isn't bad, its just unamplified, so its better for using into a stereo or TV with descent sound - Just some people prefer to have the pre-amplied audio from the Megadrive so I thought I'd quickly show the way of doing that - With this way, if you have the volume slider too high, the sound will distort. Cheers mate :)
SEGA did make an offical Asian PAL, I have two of them. They have an official SEGA sticker on the bottom with model number 1601-11 (PAL-I). What's the model number on the one you have there? Looks like it is a modded Japanese one. The PCBs on mine don't have those modifications (RF modulator and oscillator).
@shaurz - Hey man, I thought there might have been a proper Asian PAL, but there seems to be heaps of these Japanese machines being passed off as them and catching guys out :) Cheers mate!

More than welcome bud, another thing my Megadrive has PAL-I on the sticker seems like there are Asian PAL systems out there.
I'll let you know about the Saturn when I have the money, thanks for the offer of help I'll need it soon :)

@TheDamoMonster Usually it seems to be the other way around, people selling the Asian as if it were the Japanese, at least in my experience :-)
shaurz 4 months ago
The megadrive released in Hong Kong looks like a japanese system but it is proper a pal system.
You see them on ebay quite a lot with a large silver sticker that says Asian Specification and Pal-I.
I think this style of megadrive was also release in other parts of asia as i've also seen stickers that say Pal B
I've modded quite a few and they have the jumpers set the same as the UK pal system, no modification.
Thats a pal modded japanese system you have in the video though.

Nice vid, always preferred Jap over Pal, mainly due to that annoying 50mhz clock speed.
