  • GO!!!!

  • aah i hate it how people say "PUT" a stone...how bout PLACE a stone!.....

    i resign...

  • @shindouhikaru43

Where did u learn English? "Put" is the correct word.

  • @HoSayLiaoLah "Put" would of been proper if the sentence was like " How to put a stone on a go board"

  • @HoSayLiaoLah oh and by the way i happen to have ADV. English classes passed with an A. this is where i learned the difference.

  • Damnit i lost by 2 1/2 points on my second try

  • It also allows you to keep heavy sleeves (in traditional chinese and japanese dress off the board away from the board. If you try to place a stone using your index and thumb whilst keeping your sleeve up you end up obscuring the stone being placed from your opponent. (a very rude thing to do). The same movement occurs in Shogi for the same reasons.

  • A number of you have asked why is this the correct way (ie holding the stone between the index and middle finger as shown - with or without the demonstrators fiddly picking up).

One of the commentators did pick up that it keeps the underside of your hand clear of the board ..... close but only partially true.

  • Now it's upside down!

  • The thing for me is that I can't do it without all the stones around it flying everywhere XD (like when taking a ko) but I can do it so long as it doesn't have stones close to it...

  • man how is anyone gonna compete with this video

  • I always open at 4-3 and 3-4.

  • this video gives me hope

  • @makemehavefun lol!!

  • bad move!

  • And to think that all this time I've been using my feet

  • @frankiethefrank I actually have a picture of that. Look on KGS for the profile picture of user 'tijnhet'. :-)

  • @karmlol Unless you're a very cute girl I'd rather not see that:))

  • Out of curiosity, is there any particular reason this is the "proper" way to place stones? I've been doing this ever since I've had a physical board, but people I play with never understand why they "have" to place the stones like everyone else does.

  • "Holding stones this way not only lets you place the stones without disrupting the stones already on the board, but also helps to add grace to your plays. You take the stone and hold it with the nail of your pointer finger and the bottom the the midde finger. Although there are a few other ways to hold the stones, this is the easiest and most commonly used."

from the buffalo go club site

  • also when u use the index and middle try making the rest of your hand slant upward in a diagonal position that way the bottom half of your hand wont disturb stones either

  • The use of the index finger and middle finger to place a stone is because there is less chance of disturbing the other stones on the board. As for the flip with the thumb and index finger, its all a matter of style. Go is a very aesthetically pleasing game, being able to truly place a stone in the correct way contributes to the overall effect

  • 9 dan style

  • wow

  • I recommend the book "Get strong at putting stones".

  • no offence, but you should improve on that

  • I find it easiest to just pick right away with index and middle fingers. It's also useful for grabbing e.g. candies out of a bag, change out of small containers etc.

  • lol, does any1 actually plays like that? hard work just to put a hold a stone rofl

  • that way you can slam the stone as hard as you can on the board and scare the shit out of the player

  • almost everyone i know plays like that

  • probably copying sai? O_O there's no need to play like that.... just hold it with ur 2 fingers, what's the point of going through the extra effort? -0-;;

  • it's so that when you place stones, your fingers don't disturb other stones around it. also when you place a stone in a highly concetrated area some people holing it incorrectly may drop the stone in order to not disturb the other stones.

  • u can still accomplish that by holding it w/ 2 fingers

  • if you place a stone in the middle of 4 stones you can't place it gently. you're forced to drop it. unless your board is big enough to accomodate the width of the stone and your finger, but most boards are just big enough for the stones.

  • just hold it w/ ur index finger and the middle finger. there's no need to flip it... i saw absolutely NO ONE that flips it first

  • oh you mean flipping it... no one cares about that

  • exactly...

  • Picking with you thumb is easier. Moreover, placing the stone with your index and middle finger, you avoid messing the touching stones. And finally, this way is far more esthetic than rest :).

  • no, picking it up w/ the thumb isn't easier IMO. i didnt say anything about placing the stone w/ ur index and middle finger. flipping the stone is just hard ass work as displayed in dis vid. look at how long it took him to flip it

  • Yes you are right it is real hard work to flip. But it is not necessary to flip it (no sure if it is even correct) when you transfer the stone from thumb to middle finger. Try it , am I wrong?

  • so pick it up w/ ur middle finger and index finger to begin with....

  • Haha that is a nice conclusion :) To be honest I hardly recognize which fingers I use when picking up. I sometimes even pick with thumb+ring finger and place with index+middle.

  • that was done slowly it can be done faster.

  • i was just asking..., is there a point?

  • no not really i just thought id mention it.i agree actually while there is nothing wrong playing that way i still dont flip it.

  • Sai's style of flipping the stone~!

  • I really suck at go...any advice?

  • Play lots more.

  • Practice some moves in a 9x9 board look the posibilities that you have, the posibilities that the oponent could make, the traps, the unexpeted atari... watch, think and play more

  • Heres the way im learning... download the KGS go server, create an acount, and start buildin up yer rank. maby you will become a 9d some day with me and the others ("others" doesnt refer to the koreans, they are rigged)

  • lame, -_- he should have put it down with dramatic intensity to show the power of go

  • I RESIGN!

  • Please watch the movies in my "Famous go games re-enacted" playlist! It's a chain of movies of us (me and my friends) re-enacting famous old go games, in a humorous, instructive, Hikaru no go-ish style. Just give it a look, please :3

    Click my name now! :D

  • whats your KGS account name? Im only 13 kyu. you probably are a lot better than me. aheh. wanna play?

  • it's henzino. sure!

  • I resign.

  • Thats great. who needs to know how to hold a stone when you are already a 1 kyu like me. ill hold it however i want and i can maybe beat that guy in the video!

  • 1ks are so weak lol

  • BRAVO!!!! *bows* ^^

  • Some of the beginners are noisy when taking a stone and can't even hold it properly. Well done on you showing how it is properly done.

  • The technique of flipping the stone into the proper hold can be used to deceive opponents by holding it incorrectly and then flipping into correct position. This works best if you are trying to hustle them.

  • I'm speachless... just .... amazing. *crys*

  • i can do that with both hands tied behind my back! ... oh wait...

  • hehe, i guess you just need to play more go in real life, learning to place it right is not easy ^^^ so play more in real life rather than just virtual

  • so how do you place a stone properly online?

  • this video is a masterpiece

  • i just grab the stone wit my index and middle finger then raise my hand, extend and snap it down...is it ok if i do everythign right except the picking up part ??? o.o

  • yes

  • Yes. The reason you place it with the stone between your index and middle finger is because that gives you the ability to place it without touching any other stones on the board.

  • the sound comes late...

  • sound waves travels slower than light waves

  • Shouldn't all your fingers be extended as well?

  • yep

  • He also takes the stone out of the bowl incorrectly. If I recall correctly, you're supposed to pinch it between your middle and index fingers to start with, rather than take it out in a "beginner's grip" and then transfer it to the correct grip.

  • Never mind, turns out that actually isn't important.

  • amazing ive never doine that before lolololol
