i was a miner during the '89 strike, and my father, both my grandfathers, and even their fathers and grandfathers have retired from union west virginia coal mines. i have more respect for a union coal miner than almost any other critter on earth. my hats off to the umwa.

i feel for all the people workin in low top couldnt imagine somthin like that im in 5 to 6 ft coal in south west indiana pretty nice stuff..god bless all you fellow miners lets keep the lights on!
great vid, yea i've heard all the crappy stuff that goes on in mine, but i'd still love to get my miner's cards and find a job in a coal mine, because i believe that its a tough but rewarding job. God bless all past, present and future coal miners, the nation was built on the sweat of your brow.
hell yeah i work in 36-42 inch coal in the Little Eagle seam...you aint had a headache til youve hit your head on everything and it gets old fast. and your back gets all tore up..it just gets old quick but i wouldnt have it any other way
God bless all the brave miners in this world. They do what most men wouldn't do. They risk their lives every day to provide for their families. They deserve our respect. For those of you bashing coal miners, I suggest you think about who provides the electric you use. If not for the coal industry, our electric bills would outrageous even compared to what they are now.
Tell ya somethin else that will give you a headache....Handling dynamite. You get that stuff in your system, and its the worst headache you will EVER have. I blasted coal underground in the seventies, and finally got used to it, but before that, i thought i would flat die of a headache.
When I was the nipper at my first mine, I always kept a few ammonia caplets in my pocket for the guys. It was just about the only thing that would cut through a powder headache.
Even found a guy passed out cold from one. There he was laying in the middle of the haul road.....There is reason they call Tylenol miner candy.
Have to agree, being about 6'3" in a 50" seam and you hit every damn roof bolt. I would've like to have been there the day they "outlawed" low seam" hardhats back in the 80's cause they must have been a bunch of midgets.
Years ago I was hired to video tape a coal mine in Logan WV, and after it was all over, I started imitating the mine foreman. (He really used many of these phrases) You can hear him say "Dumber than a box of rocks" at the end. Cecil was a great guy...
Classic! Hubby is low seam mining here in Australia with whole team of Americans, a lot of them West Virginians.
