Back in school we all had that teacher we didn't want to mess with because they would give us either push-ups or math. Same basis. He tries to help his country by keeping the soldiers in line to the end of training. If he were their friend they wouldn't grow as brutal or as knowlagable. This is a common thing in basic training. Break them down to build them back up into Good, Trainable Soldiers. As an NCO in the Army, I have no problem with this. I do have a problem when NCO's do this and they aren't Drill Sergeants.

@PerryPantha In the U.S. military you address NCOs by their rank. A sergeant is "Sergeant". Only officers and civilians are "sir" or "ma'am". In this case, the private should have addressed his drill sergeant as "Drill Sergeant".

A combat situation is extremely stressful, but you still need to keep your wits about you and perform your tasks. When you start basic training, it seems like the drill sergeants are just trying to make your life suck, but eventually you realize that literally everything has a purpose - even the constant yelling.

@EnigmaV8 All the yelling in basic training is about inducing stress and forcing the new soldiers to adapt to unfamiliar stress. A combat situation is extremely stressful, but you still need to keep your wits about you and perform your tasks. When you start basic training, it seems like the drill sergeants are just trying to make your life suck, but eventually you realize that literally everything has a purpose - even the constant yelling.
