"Guilty Pleasure"! Get your head tested, then get back to me... Kate Bush is undisputable, irrevocable, untouchable. Put simply, she's simply unputtable...
I was lucky enough to be there all day when Kate filmed this video and she signed one of the tenners flying around at the end.
Had seen her twice Live before I spent the day with her and got to really meet her after she finished and she was really sweet and kind.....and gorgeous :-)
It's either the eyes or that great auburn mane that seems to take on a life of its own. You can tell a bit later in her career, as she works out her persona. She lets her hair out full and keeps it out.
@TheWoodlandwitch Oh bashing Americans is so passe. I doubt she "refused" to be Americanized, she just wrote the song in her own British idiom. As if I wrote a similar song and used an American idiom. BTW I knew what a tenner was immediately.
@KateFan I, SonicDeath10, bash the British? Hardly. Half the music I listen to is British. You may say "Americans do" but ah, isn't that stereotyping me by the behavior of a few people in my country? Oops.
I actually don't think anybody should bash a country but its citizens. Trust me, there are many things abuot America and Americans that are bashable. But not being American, you wouldn't really get the cultural significance. As I wouldn't bash Britain because I don't know the culture.
@sonicdeath10 I may be hanging a cherry bomb here but...America can be criticised by anyone, ANYONE in the world in a larger sense because of it's prominence (and ills) in world politics. The Wikileaks case of recent should hammer this point home.
I actually approve the British bashing America, and visa-versa, solely because criticism can lead to improvement. As it happens, Americans usually make the wrong brickbats against Britain. PM me if curious about what to say against Britain.
@sonicdeath10 I'd be very surprised if she didn't avoid Americanisms actually. The other epitome of Englishness that is Morrissey can also be said to have done this.
I respect your duty to defend your homeland outright, however, it must be expressed that American culture does hang like a shadow somewhat, meaning any artist abhorring (in the Latin sense) it will have access to artistry such as Kate displays.
@owenhunt Fair enough. There are some pretty good American artists though, if we are to speak solely of music. I really love Fiona Apple for example though her lyrics are a tad BLUNT.
It's not that I'm defending my home land per se. It's just a natural reaction I suppose. I don't "love" America but I'm from here. Not a lot of great musicians are from America. You can't deny some great Americans like Warren Zevon or Fiona Apple.
@sonicdeath10 You have a right to censure any criticism you feel to be too cliched. Kate Bush probably would have a more lopsided appeal if she incorporated American influence to visible effect. Have no doubt about it, she will have and will still listen to American artists.
I think you and the person you originally took to task with are both right. And so am I. Are we in agreeance?
oh lordy, I like much of her stuff but hated this at the time and time has not done it any favours. Still she's inventive and tries new things so what does it matter
my friend who worked at EMI studios often shared a pot of tea with Kate in the afternoons when she was in the studio, she wasn't even a Kate Bush fan!!, i was so jealous of her, being a hugh KB fan and still am. Apparently she was a really lovely person and very friendly... the only claim to being close to KB is that i live in the village where her parents once lived!!
I love the way she creates stories with characters. Most of her songs could be adapted into films or something, as well as making interesting songs themeselves with of course brilliant vocals. Brilliant music, brilliant lyrics, brilliant song topics, brilliant singer. Just an amazing ARTIST.
She's not the only great artist, but we feel as if she is. She's so authentic. Real music, and a real person. I really love her early interviews. Despite her ethereal music, she just didn't try to be cool. She passionately shared with us, without any arrogance, how she loved Art, what a joy it is to write, to create. Why are so many artists ashamed of doing the same?
Not that i'm even close to being in the creative league that Kate Bush is in, there are people like me who are talented with our craft but can't bear to bring it completely to the public. It's so VERY personal that we "give" it only in fleeting moments. I know this sounds like madness but I know it to be true for me and some of my musician friends. The public will not see some of the most outstanding performances ever given since they're privately done at homes worldwide.
She has got a very special sense of timing, with her coreos, her dancing!! I don't sing, but I do know something about dancing... and her timing for the moves is very very special, not common at all!!! I love that, you don't see it many times.
@TearInTheirHands ...Exhibit D: Siouxsie Sioux. and of course: Exhibit N:ina Hagen [list not complete]. ....ain't we just blessed to a.: have excellent taste and b.:loody youtube to avail us of it, at any time - often with footage I've never seen when I got into this fantastic music.

The girl is a fruitcake. Add a couple of blokes in white coats armed with a strait jacket and perhaps, just perhaps, it might start to add up. Perhaps.
Is there any kind of logic to the last line about the 10 shilling note, and that the "used to vote for him." Is it all just part of the dreamlike nature of the last verses?? Just WHO(M) did they used to vote for. I was thinking some pol's image was on the note, but looking it up on Google, it appears that all those bills have Queen Liz's image on them...
1:39 is my favorite, funniest moment! Here dead-pan delivery of, "To treat the gel-ignite tenderly for me..." is brilliant. Genius and humor...can't get enough of that Kate Bush!
Most female musicians today are overfed, overpaid hookers that have the charm, and grace of a Pit Bull. They certainly t dont have the intelligence to write their own music. As well, they cannot record music without million dollars worth of electronic back-up, and couldnt sing live if someone put a gun to their head.
the dreaming is one of my favourate albums on this earth. nothing has come remotely close to it's theatrical otherworldliness, however Planningotrock's album "have it all" is about as close as you can get. Another record that's gone completely under the radar despite it's genius. That said, The Dreaming is a creative surge that probably won't be repeated many times more within pop music.
She's so beautiful! For fucks sake! If there is anyone out there who knows of a girl who is comparable to Kate Bush, and they tell me, they win a prize!
I'd shave my bollocks with sand paper to lick her armpits for five seconds!
kate bush helped prototype a head mike, don't understand the reason behind the comment... is it supposed to be her fault that other artists lip synch? (because they will anyway!) Or are you saying that it's a good thing?
having a top 10 hit is achievable by any idiot. Witness the state of the charts at the moment! On the other hand, Kate Bush is doing pretty damn good for someone who never tours and had a 12 year gap between albums... and has a 30 year career based on her lack of commercialism! Talent will always out, end of story.
100% agree coracleman. Kate Bush is a unique, multi talented artist, who IS an artist in the true sense of the word. I wish that she had been a little more prolific than she has, but she has recorded so many wonderful songs and presented them in such a visual way, that one can hardly complain. Without doubt a comparison between Kate and the state of popular 'chart' music today is pointless. None of the x factor 'garbage' can possibly compare. Thank God for Kate.
Thank You! finally someone who appreciates Kate Bush for the genius song writer that she is. I have just re-appreciated hounds of love now that I am married, listen to all her music again , you will find new meaning in her songs if your life has changed.
I would love to have all of Kate's music videos released on DVD. Hell, some of the qualities post on Youtube are pretty impressive for something that's from either 1978, 1980, or 1982. Pretty damn good visual quality, I'll say.
Your fascination with anal sex is obvious from the way you keep coming back every few weeks to post the same message. But nobody wants to know. This compulsion to advertize your fantasies and share them with the world just makes you look sadder by the day. You'd better believe it, no one cares. So get lost, eh?
Well, leaving aside the references (at the very end of the song) to the fiver, tenner and ten-bob note, what is there in the lyrics that makes you think that's what it's about?
I honestly think it is about the value of the British pound because tenner means 10 pounds. I think this is Kate's reflection on the deflation on the British pound during that time, though I could be wrong. Any Kate followers care to give me some insight, please.
Some people might claim to find poetry in economics, but for most of us the fluctuating value of the pound would be a pretty dull subject to write a song about.
"I honestly think it is about the value of the British pound because tenner means 10 pounds. I think this is Kate's reflection on the deflation on the British pound during that time, though I could be wrong. Any Kate followers care to give me some insight, please."
Nope, it's more likely a homage to 40's and 50's Ealing Studios' brit flick crime capers such as the Lavender Hill Mob, etc. Thats one of the things I like about her, she's not ashamed to be thoroughly English.
As an American i would have to admit that I've not met enough fans of Kate Bush in the States, but the ones that are there are enduring fans. I always have "the dreaming" close to my music player. I'll never grow tired of it.
Kiegie, The Dreaming is a great album, but you've probably never listened to "Pawn Hearts" by Van Der Graaf Generator, considered by many one of the best recording feats and just as "brilliant, extreme, astonishing and beautiful."
The dreaming is a not easy accessible album, it´s lugubrious, dark, strange. It must be often hearded, the magic will appearing, i think. There is no comparison with Never for ever or Hounds of love - both fantastic albums, too.

I would love to have all of Kate's music videos released on DVD. Hell, some of the qualities post on Youtube are pretty impressive for something that's from either 1978, 1980, or 1982. Pretty damn good visual quality, I'll say.

This song in a metaphor for anal sex. Its true.
WKaliber1 3 years ago
Your fascination with anal sex is obvious from the way you keep coming back every few weeks to post the same message. But nobody wants to know. This compulsion to advertize your fantasies and share them with the world just makes you look sadder by the day. You'd better believe it, no one cares. So get lost, eh?

Only people with very sophisticated taste are able to understand her music. I'm very happy to be one of them :)

Well, leaving aside the references (at the very end of the song) to the fiver, tenner and ten-bob note, what is there in the lyrics that makes you think that's what it's about?
ketmaniac 3 years ago
Yeah, but wasn't the song about the economic situation that was happening at England during that time?

I honestly think it is about the value of the British pound because tenner means 10 pounds. I think this is Kate's reflection on the deflation on the British pound during that time, though I could be wrong. Any Kate followers care to give me some insight, please.
83survivor 3 years ago
Some people might claim to find poetry in economics, but for most of us the fluctuating value of the pound would be a pretty dull subject to write a song about.

Nope, it's more likely a homage to 40's and 50's Ealing Studios' brit flick crime capers such as the Lavender Hill Mob, etc. Thats one of the things I like about her, she's not ashamed to be thoroughly English.

I thought this song was about Bonny & Clyde, but the situation is kinda same to it.

As an American i would have to admit that I've not met enough fans of Kate Bush in the States, but the ones that are there are enduring fans. I always have "the dreaming" close to my music player. I'll never grow tired of it.

Indeed, I'm not afraid to state that The Dreaming is the most brilliant, extreme, astonishing and beautiful album ever made. Ever.
Absolutely amazing.

Kiegie, The Dreaming is a great album, but you've probably never listened to "Pawn Hearts" by Van Der Graaf Generator, considered by many one of the best recording feats and just as "brilliant, extreme, astonishing and beautiful."

There's a power to her music. She can harnest it like a weapon or flutter it like a butterfly.

The dreaming is a not easy accessible album, it´s lugubrious, dark, strange. It must be often hearded, the magic will appearing, i think. There is no comparison with Never for ever or Hounds of love - both fantastic albums, too.
peacemanhan 3 years ago 2
Yep. That's why I love the Dreaming (it's my favourite), it's so different and isn't easily accessible, and it makes you think. It's beautiful :D
