idk what specific notes are played on one vs the other so i cant comment there, but it doesnt take a musicion to know that a guitar and a piano sound very different...there's not just a different sound but a different quality to the sound, and more energy in the guitar (literally as well as figuratively)

In in the end of the day it is a rip off. Listen to The Cranberries - Zombie. The chords are the same but the song is different. Coldplay actually made their own song up even using the same chords. Sum 41 didnt. They changed the words and that is all they did.

The progression isn't that uncommon, that's the thing. These two aren't the only ones that use it I'm sure. You know what's funny though, on their live show Deryck plays pieces on the piano. Then it'd really be the same. But honestly, they're both brilliant songs and I couldn't give a damn if they sound similar because I somehow doubt Sum41 would copy Coldplay.

They actually ARE pretty similar, but like I've read many times in these comments, it's probably just similar chords. It's not enough to make a lawsuit as in dear Avril's case, because it's just similar, and not the same. Speaking of Avril, Girlfriend and "I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend" by the Roobinoos or whatever they're called, two different songs with similar words in the chorus. "Hey", "you", and "I wanna be" are common song words. Pointless lawsuit.

there are things called CHORDS. and chords have SCALES, and there they create PROGRESSIONS. there are really common chord progressions in popular music these days, like the I IV V progression (i.e C to F to G) and these are in soooooo many songs. did it occur to anyone here that maybe sum 41 used a common progression that coldplay also used? lol.
