i believe in male sterilisation, i'm mild mentally retarded{MENTALLY CHALLENGED}i got myself fixed when i was 20 years do to my mental retardation. i know i'm not capable of raising children do to my disability. i believe people who are mild-severily mentally retarded should be forced to get fixed. i know i carry the gene that will cause me to father a mentally retarded child, thats why i'm happy i got fixed.
@TheBigboy46 However, I am a woman with Asperger's Syndrome and Epilepsy. I believe that I was forced into getting the essure procedure (similar to a tubal ligation) by my father as a 19 year old. As someone who is part of the pro life movement and as a christian, I strongly regret this action that was placed upon me and know I have to live with it for the rest of my life. I always wanted a family of my own b/c I came from a family destroyed by divorce and felt the need to rewrite my past.
@Stephie2007 i'm mild mentally retarded(MENTALLY CHALLENGED)and it was best for me to get sterilized since i'm not capable of raising children myself.
Look, Dr. Paul Lewis is a devout Christian man. He has morals and values and he wouldn't do something unethical without knowing. I met him couple years ago in our church here in the states. I myself comes from an indigenous background and with Dr. Lewis's help, we have our own written language...
The disadvantages to sterilizing indigenous peoples: 1. It is irreversible- If the couple should later want more children- in the event, for example, that one or more of their children should die... there is no way of reversing the operation with our facilities.
2. Complications can take place- Such as possibility of burning the bowl when cauterizing the tubes. (Philips et al. 1976, Thompson and Wheeless1973)
3. It cannot be done in the village- Traveling to the hospital sometimes posses problems, as the time three Akha women coming in during rains could not cross a flooding stream. Also, I will reimburse them when they get there, but they cannot pay even the original expense.
4. Akha women do not like to have an abdominal scar because they wear their skirts very low, thus, exposing a fair amount of the abdomen. Thanks to the laparoscope and a skillful surgeon who cares, there is very little complaint about this from the Akha women.
5. There is a danger that funding organizations will push projects harder to get the largest numbers of sterilizations possible- whether the people really make the choice freely or not. This can have a backlash effect on the program, as is reported to have happened in India Lewis -- Introduction to Family planning- PG. 147-149
There are three pro's to five cons in Paul W Lewis Dissertation titled "Introduction of a family planning program to Akhas in Thailand" Lewis say's, "By far the most practical thing for akhas is the interval sterilization via tubal ligation, which our program has been offering akha women since march 1974.
Advantages 1. It is free- Programs pays for the hospital services, and their travel. 2. It is effective- Of the 1,351 women we have sterilized so far one Lahu women had another pregnancy 3. It is safe- the women can be out working in the fields again with in a couple of weeks after operation. There have been no fatalities.
The Bureau of Indian Affairs assimilate native children until the late 1900s, forcing them into boarding schools far from their homes and punishing them if they used indigenous languages or practiced their religion. State welfare agencies and courts perpetrated and allowed the removal of 1 in 4 native children to foster homes and adoptions, up until the Child Welfare Act of 1978 was passed to stop this.
Lee Brightman, United Native American President, Estimates that of the Native Population of 800,000(in the US), as many as 42% of the women of childbearing age and 10% of the men had been sterilized. Dr. Connie Uri reported the first official inquiry into the sterilization of native women that 25,000 Indian women had been permanently sterilized with Indian Health services facilities alone through 1975.
According to a 1970 fertilization study, 20% of married black women had been sterilized, almost three times the percentage of white married women. There was 180% rise in the numbers of sterilization performed during 1972-73 in New York city municipal hospitals which sere predominately Puerto Rican Neighborhoods.
what do you think giving out change piggy banks so people can put their change in 'em and then send the change to Mr. McDaniel?- sorry I forgot how to spell his name, I'm bad at names.
I can't quote the assistant executive to Frohnmayer perfectly,so take that into consideration.I filmed this back in Oct'07.I can tell you, that he was very nice to us. He told that their was nothing he could do and that the PhD could not be resided because once you get a PhD you always have a PhD, He told that He read the whole Thesis titled: "An Introduction to Family Planning Programs to Akhas In Thailand." and that a new type of Anthropology is practiced now, suppose to back then in 1978.
Personally I feel that If the thesis was pulled from the library that other students would not be able to look back at what was acceptable then and what is frowned upon now.
The sterilization have stopped because many Aid workers reported that the sterilizations where coercive in nature.
I do think that the University of Oregon has the power to make a right out of the wrong but I believe that this will only happen by public demand.
Between the early decades of the last century, the doctrine of eugenics gained widespread support in the scientific community. 1900-1925, Oregon was one of 33 states the enacted laws to provide forced sterilization. Governor of Oregon John Kizhaber,MD made public Apology regarding Eugenics and forced sterilization of 2,600 institutionalized patients. The Governor made Dec.10 human rights day in Oregon.
I think the article is Titled: Apology regarding Eugenics- Proclamation of Human Rights Day and Apology for Oregon's Forced sterilization of institutionalized patients.
