I've been wondering about something pertaining to Afrikaans grammar and I was wondering if maybe an Afrikaner/Afrikaans-speaking person could clarify it for me: Can the words 'vir' and 'voor' be used interchangeably to mean 'for'? For some reason, I like the way 'voor' looks, but I don't know if it is considered to be correct in Standard Afrikaans.

We can as well be more + and less - about it, as we live in a world where people are on the MOVE. Afrikaans started and evolved this way since 1652 . First people to speak and write it were Malay slaves: ask what is "many" and "banana" in Afrikaans, for example. To say today still its the language of the oppressor is to say it of pidgin english. Sure, Afrikaans is an Indo-European and Germanic language, so from a linguistic point of view, isn't African, but it's a language of Africa. (In Afrikaans, there is a distinction made between 'Afrikaans' and 'Afrikaan', unlike Dutch, in which 'Afrikaans' just means 'African'.) Similarly, Suriname Hindustani isn't related to indigenous South American languages - but it's still language of South America, and as different from Hindi spoken in India as Afrikaans is from Dutch.

@muhammadisasissy No, the Dutch in SA spoke what would then have been regarded as standard Dutch - however, the Malay slaves used a kitchen Dutch with simpler grammar, which then was passed back to the white settlers. The Cape Malay Muslims wrote this simplified form of Dutch in Arabic script, and some claim that this was 'hijacked' by whites, who you would have thought would have wanted to keep a standard form of Dutch, instead of using a patois used by non-whites.

The main differences are simplified spelling and grammar. One Afrikaans word that tends to puzzle Dutch speakers is 'baie' ('very' or 'many') which may be from the Malay 'banyak' - there are people of Malay ancestry in South Africa, who wrote Afrikaans using Arabic script, as they once did Malay.
