  • If I had a nickel for every mega pixel this video has, I'd have one nickel.

  • why are snares playing matched grip? normally it doesnt matter to me what grip they use but its just that im use to seeing them using traditional grip

  • i love the fact that kent cater is at the very end of this video. scv's bass sound can be attributed that that man alone. :)

  • Jesus christ.....the tenors on double beat....i had an orgasm.

  • Agogo bells....? that's so badass.

  • @Timmyinc44 : It helps the line feel what they're playing instead of mechanically ramming out notes

  • @Timmyinc44 : It helps the line feel what they're playing instead of mechanically ramming out notes

  • @Timmyinc44: It helps the line with feel for what they're playing as opposed to the mechanical Dr. Beat or a some other drone.

  • haha I'm from vancouver and Gusseck lives here, used to teach at Evergreen HS.

I talked to him once, he seems pretty into drumset as well...

  • drumming: sweet!.......grip: gay!

  • why are they playing matched!!! boo on you SCV...boo on you!

  • I still can't believe they marched matched grip this year...

  • Match grip is a no no for snare drum!!! Lol

  • Why is everybody black

  • @TheMippo

Cuz black people have more feeling in there pants.

  • matched = win! and makes perfect sense if u think about it. and i love the outkast groove in there. SCV! literally the hippest and imo best shows in the lot.

  • whats up with matchgrip on snare

  • they play matched every ten years....

  • If I only had half the compositional skill of mr. gusseck I would be happy

  • Why were they playing in matched though? They always play traditional.

  • @DallasMorningNews A whole lot of very good groups seem to be doing pretty well with flat drums and traditional grip for many decades now.

  • @DallasMorningNews no if you are playing marching drums you should play traditional because it is just a better visual effect..

  • I saw them in Salem, Va. and although I really don't care for matched grip, they definitely threw down. :-)

  • I dislike matched, but jesus fuckin christ vanguard can rip it

  • matched grip wtf oh well still one of the best

  • Why aren't they using traditional grip? Man this is awesome 4.5 stars!

  • I was screaming my ass off at this lot. Was awesome!!!1

  • excellent work!

  • yeah!flammus and double beat

my two fav warm ups from scv

  • mr gusseck is a genius

  • im surprised with the matched grip anyways goovy lick

  • its hot but match grip??idk

  • its been talked about... years ago....

  • 05!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • its just a grip! it shouldnt affect anyones views and opinions if there was no video youd never know. A lot of people look down at this line for playing matched but it wasnt the grip that held them back they just didnt execute as well as usual.

  • really true

my high school drumline (i play bass)

plays matched grip its actually alot easier since most play with there snare level

  • THANK YOU!

  • the beat that starts at 2:00 is taken from a song by Outkast called "Spread".....it was still decent...

  • Why are you guys thumbing her down? It's true that that part is taken from Outkast.

And the first part of Double Beat is taken from a remix of Steve Reich's "Drumming".

Listen to these tunes before thumbing down. They share unmistakable similarities.

  • @Presonance i've been saying this for years!! it is the exact same parts as in "Spread". The bass part, tenors, and snares, its all there lol. My line played it in high school and we used to put spread on to play with it. Exact!!

  • @Presonance taken from? no

    sounds like? yes

  • @thisstinks92 Sorry bro, you're wrong.

You have no idea what you're talking about, do you?

  • @Presonance apparently you have no idea what I'm talking about. nothing is ever specifically taken from something else unless it's stated that that's what happened. electric wheelchair wasn't the first groove to have THAT specific beat; it's been around for ages. many others are like this as well

  • @thisstinks92 It seems as though you think I'm criticizing Murray for "stealing" musical ideas. I'm not. Maybe that's how the thinking goes in the popular music that you listen to, but in the percussion world, it's not stealing, it's a tribute or simply a borrowing of ideas -- explicitly attributed or not.

Regarding Double Beat 2004, I'm guessing you've never listened to the Steve Reich remix or Outkast tune, and never played this in a real line and seen the sheet music. Am I right?

  • mad nice since their uniforms are white get black sticks

  • wats the name of this cadence?

  • double beat

  • the first one is called "flammus". the second one is their double beat.

  • does the grip really matter.

    they're putting a b.a. book out there.

    get over it.

    go scv.

  • Honestly on a drum with no tilt i really think matched grip sounds more even. That is why a lot of lines tilt the snares for traditional. the tilt is made to fit your left hand traditional grip. Thats why the old army drums tilted them and played traditional.

  • actually to be honest..

the tilted drum didn't come from traditional grip.

traditional grip came from the tilted drum. they didn't have carriers and stuff waaay back in like the war of 1812. so they had to figure out a way to play a tilted drum because it had a strap.

also, evenness of sound depends on technique and stick pitch.

  • snaredrumming wasn't invented in the US. The traditional grip was developed long long long before your civil war, somewhere in the 15th century I believe, in Switzerland.

  • i never said snare drumming was invented in the US. I'm sure the traditional grip was developed way before 1812 or 1776, plus the civil war was in 1865 or 7 ish. I was just saying that's where it came from, the strap. that was just an example of where they used it.

  • I always thought it came from Scotland, or somewhere in the Scottish region.

  • DUDE!

The traditional grip comes from the days of the revolutionary war when the drum was on a sling and rested on the left leg. The grip was a means to an end.

  • well, thats true i guess, it might sound different for him personally, i mean ive been switched so much im used to both, but i remember my first time switching from traditional back to matched after about a year, and it felt so alien i kept screwing up dynamic, and all other aspects. but eh, then again im no where neeeear as good as the SCV. :D

  • its not the fact that matched grip looks so ugly, its the fact that we all know they practiced their asses off in matched but if they did the same in traditional [which they all are probably really good at] it would sound exactly the same. which ever grip you choose doesnt mean it sounds better thats a mattter of opinion.

  • Thanks for the clarification

  • our snare line this year might switch to matched grip. its completely new line next cause we had an all senior line thats graduating. if we do use traditional again then were tilting our drums. also our snareline was reduced to 3 from 5.

  • no offense to you guys but thats sad. start promoting or something.

  • Pretty sure they bring back the matched grip every 10 years.... Go back and check out SCV '95, '85, etc...

  • I love SCV but it was just so odd seeing them go amtch grip. But like ppencil said it does clean up some licks.

  • matched grip might LOOK wierd... but it sure as hell cleans the licks UP! and thats wat matters.. SCV baby..

  • those snares would of looked mad nice if they used traditional

  • honestly it doesn't matter what grip is used as long as the grip chosen is perfected, and vanguard is great no matter what grip they use.

  • cool. glad the snare line chose to go back to traditional grip in later years. :)

  • Ive heard its only a one year deal like they do it every 4 years so that everyone can like graduate from the line with doing both traditional and match. In this case I thnk their doing it this year. We'll see.

  • That'd be so retarted... I don't know what it is, but there's something about when I see snares playing matched grip that pisses me off... I don't really know why it bothers me either, cause I'm not a snare, I'm a tenor player. Still though It's kind of stupid. Snare players should play tradish. Period.

  • Amen.

  • You ARE a moron. WERE HAVE YOU MARCHED IM SURE NO WERE MORON!!! Matched is GREAT! They play this stuff so FAST you Play this and see how good of quality you have im sure it sucks

  • Excuse me? First of all, this video was filmed in 05, so they're over the whole MATCHED GRIP bullshit. Second I didn't say that they didn't play good. I said I didn't like matched grip. They played clean, with good technique, dynamics, and quality of sound, and all you're concerned about is how "FAST" they were? Sounds to me like YOU'RE the moron here. By the way, you're a fucking idiot who uses the fact that I don't like matched grip to defend your ignorant assumption of my ensemble experiences

  • woot! :D

    i agree with tenorsnarefun,

tcw, you have no clue about every individuals marching expirience and preference.

so in all the kindest ways, fuck you tcw.

  • I love the Neopolitan set up.

  • the groove that comes in around 1:40 is tits

  • thats double beat... a cadence look it up

  • PS Murray rulez

  • well im pretty sure that there was no reason to it. although i do remember that some guy said murray thinks drummers should be strong in both styles so that might be it

  • wtf MATCH GRIP? Why? Someone tell me?

  • they did match in 2005

  • I see that but WHY?

  • cause murray wanted to

  • ok and what was murrays reason? not enough guys in snare line have strong chops traditional?

  • shut up

  • eat a dick

  • murray gusseck says in his blog that he was trying to get the same sound from both sticks playing traditional so he just had the snares play matched. no tradition or anything, just his personal preference for that year

  • It's a SCV tradition. With every year ending in a 5, they use match.

  • lolz at Murray and his cowbell jammin'.

  • lol match grip

  • two things I don't like...snares are too low...if you are gonna play matched, keep the drum at the same level, just change the grip...and I hate seeing the snare and tenor mix...it's not really appealing to see and I don't think it changes the quality of the sound that much...

  • yeah if you listen to his reasoning for everything, its so you can see how your sound fits in to the overall picture.....and having the drums low and angled that way is the most ergonomic way to play with matched

  • he used to teach at our school,

    hes hella funny

we got levi now(short guy with the fro in 07)

  • wtf? is the guy at 0:13 just like staring down that snare player?

    creeeeper...

  • That would be the tech. lol

  • jump to 2:00 on this vid. then listen to "spread" by outkast.

  • I seriously thot i was the only person who noticed that

  • thats awesome man. which one is he?

  • DOUBLE BEAT = AWSOME

  • ahh. bassess= amazing :DDD

  • AWESOME!!!

  • yeah that is pretty weird

  • that kicks ridiculous amounts of ass!!

  • that bassdrum waterfall is amazing =)

  • waterfall? you mean the roll?

  • no, the waterfall.. im guessing you call it something different

  • hip?

Good thing their playing traditional grip

  • does anybody know where i can get the music for that cadence starting at 0:40 ?

  • Its called SCV Double Beat, and i dont think it is a Cadence

  • is the music written anywhere? I'm taking a gamble on that question because I thought that the Cavaliers' Latin Lover wasn't written down then I found it later. lol

  • that was CLEAN!!!

  • Match grip.

  • They play matched cause Murray's theory is you have to be able to play matched before you can go to traditional. I took private lessons from him. The guys a beast

  • good theory but its not like these guys are beginner drummers. i think they deserve to play traditional at this moment

  • SCV has a tradition of playing matched ever so years or something like that

you'd have to look it up though

  • The bass line is fucking awesome

  • is gusseck playing what i think he's playing?

    if he is....

    MORE!!!

  • lol

  • Alright, i know some of the snare players are short, but they need to RAISE those stands!!! it just doesnt look very appealing visually and the matched grip doesnt help either.

Im an SCV fan and i think the sound is incredible here, but comeon guys...

  • if ur a fan y r u complaininf

if u notice all the drums are about level thats the look you want to go for

andevery line is diff btwn matche and traditional

  • SCV double beat is so fuckin cool! who would of ever thought that a diddle exercise could be so cool!!!!! way to go Murry Gusseck! Great job drummers of Santa Clara!

  • i think this exersize sounds cooler at a slower tempo

oh, and PS, it doesnt matter if u use matched or traditional, they both work the same

its like saying, green apples are better than red apples

  • but.... they are better than red apples. everyone knows that.

  • Why does it matter whether or not they use matched or traditional? Exceptional percussionists should be skilled with both techniques.

  • Gusseck was there before and they played traditional. "I guess I just didn't want to spend as much time trying to get the same sound out of the left hand." - Gusseck on a lot patrol interview.

  • why would they have a tenor tech for snares?

i thought they had different techs for different sections...

well, anyway, SCV was awesome this year. i saw them yesterday at Americafest...

  • Umm im gonna have to completely disagree. Possibly they were going for something different and Matched is deffinately more efficient of a style and theres a more even sound .

  • none of these naive, inexperienced kids know who Poole is...or his innovative, imaginative contribution to this activity.

  • TERRIBLE year for the SCV drumline.. I almost wasn't even a fan that year.. But I just couldn't help myself.

  • i was at that show.....i remember walking up to them and thinking i had wandered into the movie drumline....hahaha.....

  • whyy matchedd..

    =/

    it makes them look wierdd..lol

  • i agree, but the match grip is more lose and SCV is all about the lose and relaxed grip.

  • i wouldnt say the hippest...dirtiest, yes. average, yes. status quo, yes. want original, rocking, hip and tightest..look for cadets, devs.

  • screw you

  • oh wow, such an intelligent, eloquent retort. how impressive, your trailer living parents must be proud. LMAO

  • Arguing on a thread about DCI drumlines is kind of like jumping off a cliff-you think it's a good idea until you wisen up halfway down, and by then your whole credibility goes splat.

  • bizarre, illogical, left field, abstract analogy. I take it you dont read or write creatively all that much.

  • 2 JesOnTheRun:Y don't you go watch those videos then Mr. Smarty pants, doubt you could play like them anyways, you're probably just a Ree Ree.

@ the video: I like SCV and I think Murray had a good idea using matched but that's just me.

2 everyone: SCV was still a good corps and they did it to help with tone between hands plus it was a while ago so WAH. I bet none of you has more experience with a drumline than Murray so I think you should just chill. :-D Leave the line to him.

  • Dude, how old are you? Your prose is that of a 15 yr old teenage child. 1.)dont worry about what I do, as I enjoy freedom of expression, I do as I please. 2.)No Murray doesnt have more experience than I, his first year of corp was my 5th, I aged out 2 years before he did. 3.) No one is dissing Murray, I actually know the man, you dont.

  • YEAH YOU KNOW HIM!!!! You remind me of this guy...he's 18 and he's acts like he's big stuff when he's not. You're kinda funny. Have a nice day moron.

  • yeah, okay...dumbass, i met murray when he was marching under scott johnson at SCV...scotty taught me, we hung on tour, being that i was teaching another line,duh...its a small world in dci, but you wouldnt know. You are too busy being old, wrinkled, middle aged loser who cant seem to construct a legible, comprehensive sentence. Like I give two shits what someone like YOU thinks. LOL. Dude, get a life and get a grip.

  • @JessOnTheRun if youre really as old as you say you are then LOL WTF LOSER. someone thats as old or older then a genius like murray shouldnt be immature enough to argue like that, hahahaha. so therefore you are the loser.

  • @gothdrummer7: you are bringing up something from 2 years ago? LOL.... dude, get a life... just because I embarrassingly slapped you with ownage, you are still walking around bitter? What a dumbass... no wonder women laugh at you and you cant get laid.... "goth drummer" buwhahahahaha.... "goth" is fucking nerd and is 20 years out of date... get with the program hick

  • that was awesome!

but yea r they doin matched grip for fun or wat?

  • i believe so.. it SCV lol, there always different..

  • Man this piece is tight...for tenors lol. Not much happening for snares until the triplet (?) groove lol.

  • was that glen crosby at the end?

  • It is Kent Cater, Bass Drum Deity

  • it went by fast... thanks...

  • wasnt the reason why they stopped playing double beat was because they got a new instructor right?

  • Lol the ending is funny

  • tatally not diggin the match grip, it looks so much less intaminating than traditional. thats just my opinion

  • OMG, That was so clean and together. o had to just get up and leave the room and collect myself. That was great!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • love their basses

  • Not too into the match grip snare thing, but they were still bad ass like they are every year.

  • If this was '06, I don't believe SVC marched match that year. I think, that grip is just for that warm-down.......

  • it was 05, we didnt change grip to warm-down....why warmdown? trad means higher snares and very awkward match grip

  • Wow super tight. Well done!

  • WHY OH WHY ARE YOU PLAYING MATCH???? Atleast Gusseck was smart enough to switch back to Trad in '06

  • every ten years, the scv snares play match for one season.

  • really? is that true?

  • I thought it was 5

  • even though gusseck left. =]

    Mike jackson took over.

  • Murray Gusseck wasn't with SCV in 2006...Tim Jackson took over as Battery Caption. He's back for 2008 though.

  • dont you mean mike jackson...

  • Yeah, sorry hahaha.

  • id like to see you do it half as good as them

  • i think you pretty much got it there lol

  • this is a cadence written by Gussek called "Double Beat", and that was the Second version with the two tenor breaks.

  • Yeah!

  • Match grip for a drum corp hmmm....

  • ya know at least the Vanguard Drumline over the years has had the courage to try new things, see how they work and roll with the result, no matter what it is. In addition, playing matched in the snareline was a staple that made them who they are......my instructor marched '81, '84 and played both matched and traditional at Santa Clara, so really its whatever the caption head wants to do and if that doesnt work they find something that does, so just deal with it

  • hippest show in the lot? you serious? maybe the year after...and deff the year before...but 05? what they get? like 10th? hippest show my ass...
