I had the pleasure of seeing Jan perform ( without Dean unfortunately ) in 1978 at the Capricorn Lounge in Joppatowne, Md. just east of Baltimore on Rt.40. It was a small facility that held maybe 200 people, so it was intimate. After the show I got to go backstage and meet and briefly talk with Jan! He surprised me that he could sing as well as he did.It was a great memory.
i saw Jans band at Six Flags in Arlington tx in abooout out 1978. i think they called primoted it as the Jan Berry Beach Band. it was a good show but not the same without Dean. I finally got to see Dean with the All stars for the first time at South Padre Island. What a great show! Growing up i never saw video clips of Jan&dean. Thanks for sharing Mary. These u tube videos are great.
@26marbay ...i love all the pieces on this SO much....i just HAD to share!! : ) I love Jan & Dean and all they did in Phase I and Phase II and now...all that Dean is doing in "Phase III" You're welcome...and thank you for commenting. Mary
Wonderful clip. We get to see exactly how hard it was for Jan and what extraordinary courage he had. Also, he was fortunate to have such a good friend as Dean.
I REALLY THINK IT IS ASHAME THAT ROCK AND ROLL DOESN'T RECOGNIZE THE IMPORTANCE OF JAN AND DEAN TO THE MUSIC WORLD. THEY HAD ALOT TO DO WITH THE INDUSTRY IN THE STUDIO AND THE BUSINESS THE LAID IMPORTANT TRAILS THAT MUSICIANS IGNORE.
This is HenriMusicBox's comment: Only great artists have a fake; that proves how great Jan and Dean were; sorry still are!.
That interview is indeed very rare and good quality for a more than 30 yr old recording. I'm glad that Mary spends so much time to make these historical facts accessible to everybody. (...but me, the amateur!, accidentally "deleted" it...)
@Maryw7 I watched the video again and enjoyed it like before. Henri, the short-memory amateur, doesn't remember what he wrote... Looking to the comment, I think there is nothing more to say. However (perhaps I wrote that before), it seems to me that Dean acts like an older brother of Jan. Not only when he is helpin finding the right word (at 5:00) but also the little joke at 4:42. That alone proves that he is the real Dean. In The Netherlands we say that there is 'a good chemistry' .
@HenriMusicBox Hey...Henri? See how I tried copying your first comment and put it on...therefore it looks like it's my "own" comment. But it's your first one, really! and thank you for it very much!
I really like your second comments so very much, too! And agree with each totally. Just how I feel !! : )

To underscore how bad Jan's accident was I believe he was pronounced dead at the site of the accident when the cops and EMTs found him.

Somewhere else, I remember reading about Dean joking that he should start touring with a fake Jan when he found out about it! Typical Dean humor LOL!
