  • This is a good version, but this, coming from someone who saw him, it in no way Dylan. This is a fake. It is a cover, his voice had far more character than this bullshit attempt.

  • @Crankypantsareon This is Dylan you Plonker. Takem form his first album entitled 'Bob Dylan'

Dylan copied this version form Dave Van Ronk and the Animals copied form this version!

  • i love this, ty

  • @Wildwoodflowerify Me too! Thanks...

  • Yeah, you just cannot top Eric Burdan singing this song, God put him on this planet for that one sole purpose.

Dylan? His masterpiece is IMO The Times They Are a Changing and is the perfect song for his voice.

  • @Stiletos Oh, yeah, "The Times They Are a Changing"; one of his best! That recording has a little more passion than this, but I love them both. Thanks for commenting!

  • @solidearthmusic Okay, I just listened to "House..." again, and I want to retract the comment that "The Times..." has a little more passion. This recording of "House..." captured an amazing, heartfelt performance. I'm not sure it gets much better than this, but, again, I love them both. And, are you familiar with the Beatles' "Hide Your Love Away"? I always thought that was John Lennon's homage to Bob Dylan, and that Dylan had a huge impact on Lennon's future writings.

  • MASTERPISE

i don't know how to write it but I think that is a Masteriese..!!

    ...BoB Dylan...

  • @BJkingsize You write fine, hahaha, I understand your point; glad you enjoyed it.

  • @solidearthmusic

    -in the 2nd "MasterPise" i forgot "P" :P

    hahaha

  • In my humble opinion, Dylan's is the best version of this song I've heard.

  • @dim0nich Thanks for watching; I couldn't pick a "best", but Dylan's is masterful...

  • @solidearthmusic of course you could pick a best. the first i heard was The Animal's version, and i loved it then. Like 1 year later i heard Dylan's and i was stunned. It felt like i wouldnt be hearing this song covered by the animals any soon. so i didnt

  • wow

  • Eric Burden's voice inspires me. Bob Dylan is cool but, ehh

  • This is the best version of this song

  • the animals didnt write, bob dylan sang it first and he took it from one of his friends.

  • @JacobFoden It's an old popular folk music, if he took it from one of his friends, that friend didn't make the music anyway.

  • The animals sang this song about not gambling and drinking. it was originally made as a warning to prostitutes.

  • "Like many classic folk ballads, the authorship of "The House of the Rising Sun" is unknown." the original is not by leadbelly, nor by dylan, nor by the animals...

  • he sounds like a cat with sorethroat lol

  • @TheJohnnyisawesome Actually the original was by Leadbelly

  • Now that is blues.

  • I dont like his voice but DAMN that was good

  • best version in my opinion

  • Good version, but i personally like the animals better

  • I've always enjoyed the Animals' version of this song, but lordy, this one has me feeling so much more of what the singer is supposed to be feeling. I think I just found my new favorite version of this song. :-)

  • Me gusta mucho esta versión mas que la de los animals. gracias por subirla

  • The Animals recorded this song in 1964 with a tempo very close similar to the Passacaglia BWV 582 from J.S: Bach (a nice version by Xaver Varnus could de found under the code QGXCxF83Iv0)

  • I've always liked this song in the many versions it's been done by many people. I've always loved Dylan... but never heard this version before. Thanks so much for this. It's pricceless!

  • @lrcelano I am so glad you enjoyed it; I was amazed the first time I heard this recording, about a year ago. Thanks for watching!

  • @lrcelano A jewel in the rough... glad you enjoyed it.

  • Dave Van Ronk and Woody Guthrie have great versions too.

  • interesting choice for him to throw in "girl" instead of "boy" at the end there...

  • @jerban8879 The song was originally about a girl. It was The Animals who changed the lyrics.

  • BTW-does anyone knw of ANY LIVE versio nof this song by DYLANi nthe 60's ? I have never heard a LIVE version by Dtlna done in the 60s..I am not interested in later versions becausxe his voice just wasn't/isn';t the same as this period 1961-1964

  • This is the REAL Dylan...when he was 100% PURE and not influenced by fame, fighting society or anything..excep aLOVE o roots music..and this is the finest example I have ever heard of pure emotion and raw depth..this is my favorite versio nof all time...ther is sorrow,m there is poverty, there is sadness..all of those things are missing from modern music..the are offensive to TV and record labels.

  • @DavelovesRealMusic Dave, I think you got that right: "pure emotion and raw depth". (in response to your comment on "House of the Rising Sun" about a month ago; sorry, I've been busy. Thanks for watching and commenting!)

  • @solidearthmusic Hello. Thank you. yes..I have always thought this was the greatest modern version (in the past 50+ years) of the song. To those who say he is 'over the top" you miss what he is singing about. he is feeling the song and the pain and he is reaching deep within to give us 'his all". It is exactly what the song NEEDS..Dylan always knows what he is doing..it is for US to figure out he is right all along..

  • @DavelovesRealMusic Well said...

  • woody guthrie i think

  • dude... that version is so full of emotion!

  • @rippersk8er I was blown away the first time I heard it, and I still love it...

  • @solidearthmusic

hay música que funciona en días tristes y en días alegres ... Bob Dylan tiene el poder de hacer de su música algo tan fuerte, que puede ser escuchada por cualquier persona en cualquier circunstancia ...

There ... Let me know if you could translate it and I can check if it`s right ...

And thank you for been open minded and let my express myself ...

Greetings from Colombia !!! ... (Sorry if my english isn't perfect ... I'm working on it)

  • @tribuprod Greetings from America to Colombia! Your English is better than my Spanish! Anyway, I pasted your post into Google translator, and it came back with this: "there is music that works on sad days and happy days ... Bob Dylan has the power to make their music so strong, that can be heard by anyone in any circumstance ..."

That makes sense to me, so let me know if that's okay with you, and thanks for putting in the extra effort! Adios...

  • @solidearthmusic

    Spot on !!! .... That's exactly what I mean ....

  • @tribuprod Okay, then, thank you, and feel free to comment to your Spanish-speaking friends... cheers!

  • who originally wrote this song

    ?

  • @boardsaket Its an old folk song. No one knows who the original author was... :s

  • If you enjoy the "classical rock" era of this song, still make sure you check out the oldest version of the recognizable rendition (1933 not 1928, as 1928 is a different rendition completely). Make sure you allow yourself to respect the other people of older generations that helped keep this song alive. The Animals, and Bob Dylan, both carry on that legacy, but we must respect those who have come before us, to respect what we can do with the future.

  • leadbelly-bob d-animals-frijid pink. thats what i think.

  • Great.!..having lived my teen years in the 60's...we were so lucky to be exposed to the best music around..from Elvis.to the Beatles..and Dylan...thanks..

  • @dar4869 You're welcome; thanks for taking the time to comment.

  • @dar4869 no...except the beatles

  • His voice melts my heart, my soul. Bob forever !!!!!!

  • I think this is the best cover ever made (:

  • @mrsdamngoodcoffee Glad you enjoyed it... and I must say to you, mrsdamngoodcoffee, you have one of the best youtube names ever!

  • this song is awesome, in any possible version. Animals' specially, Dylan's too, Muse's as well, the sound of it is magic

  • It was recorded by Dylan first or Animals?

  • @trani123 the animals

  • @agrow0 Wrong. Dylan recored this in 1961, where as the animals recorded theirs in 1964. They were inspired by Dylans version. The original song of course is older than both.

  • Never before being poverty-stricken was so soulful. Only Dylan could do this!!! :-)

  • This version breaks my heart. Brings out the remorse, the desperation, the hopelessness of the voice (i.e. the subject) of the song. Dylan sure does know how to treat his subjects with respect.

  • @bdogwynn Bdog, that was my reaction, as well, the first time I heard this almost a year ago. "The voice of the song": exactly! I think Bob got it so well, he didn't even feel compelled to change the gender of the subject to match his own; he just played it as it lay!

  • @solidearthmusic Yes he played it as if he was a prostute.

  • wonderful song

  • Animals version is damn good... But when I heard Dylan... no doubt anymore... Bob FOREVER!!!!

  • @GunsBrother Thanks for watching and writing...

  • This the first time I hear the house of rising sun song by Bob Dylan....fantastic....two thumb.

If all of you don't mind can help me for download MP3 only ? TIA

  • @GunsBrother That's exactly what I thought when I first heard Dylan's version! The man is incredible!

  • @GunsBrother if you think Dylan sings it good you should check out the Joan Baez version..

  • @GunsBrother The animals version, is the original...

  • @TheJohnnyisawesome Original version is from 40's... Dylan's 1962, animals 1964... cheers

  • @GunsBrother My apologies, I just looked it up, you're right bro

  • @GunsBrother oldest recording of this song is actually 1933 but alan price from the animals claims the song was originally an english folk song from the 1500's about a soho brothel and that people brought it to america where it became a new orleans setting

  • @Motorbreath82 well someones jealous :)

  • this version actually tells the story! i love it!

  • The Animals version is rockin, this one is compelling. You feel every bit of anguish. The guy in the Animal's version is weighed down by his vices, the girl in this version (which is particularly amazing for a guy like Dylan to pull off) is crushed by them. Effectively two totally different awesome for their own reasons versions. Made me think of the song in a whole new way I was blown away.

  • I prefer this version. It's probably because his voice is more soulful!

  • I prefer The Animals . But this version is really really good.

  • this is the other take on a great song..... the animals punched it dylan gave it emotion .......whats the argument people?

  • Bah, so much argument about whether The Animals or Bob Dylan sing it better. Atleast we can all agree that both are far better than the Muse version

  • @jhasxvd Glad you enjoyed it; I did, too.

  • bob dylan is god ?

  • Wow.

  • Bob > God

  • First time hearing this version. It is very good, as is the Animals' version.

  • @XR4turbo Glad you enjoyed it; thanks for watching!

  • i always like this one.

  • Bob stole this version from Dave VanRonk. The Animals used this version for inspiration, and turned it Rock and Roll. But No one is more desolate than Dylan.

  • @kateified Desolate... I like that... can you imagine, over the last 200 years since this song first made it's way over to America from England, how many other desolate, soulful versions were sung that would never touch the likes of a microphone or recording tape, lost to the wind and the generations that came before and after... I like to think that Dylan's version was similar to those he borrowed from... and kudos to the Animals for their re-interpretation!

  • @solidearthmusic I love the video you made for this. My dad gave me a book of folk songs when I was a little girl. House of the Rising Sun was included. I fell for it before I knew what it meant, or heard it performed. I just played it on my flute.

  • @kateified Thank you; that is sweet of you. And I thank your Dad for giving you the gift of music; that is the best... my Dad was a physicist (very scientific!), but I will remember always the music that he loved. Enjoy your flute; I'm a really bad guitar-player, but I love it...

  • @kateified I play guitar too, Science and music are related disciplines. Your dad probably enjoyed that aspect as well as the beauty...

  • @kateified he got paid back with watchtower though didn't he?

  • @kateified or even payback in the same song..where people accused him of stealing it from the animals

  • I don't like... But I don't dislike

  • In the last couple minutes, does he not have a little Ralph Stanley tone?

  • @lifepoint03 Your comment prompted me to check out Ralph Stanley, whose name I have heard before, but whose recordings are unfamiliar to me. He's going on my Christmas wish-list; thanks!

  • @churcillcrocodile thank you, you said it all in three sentences.. : ). idk how it came by dylan, but it clearly reverberated through him in full. no question, the man had souul

  • to see dylan in his prime.... i would pay anything

  • animals have created a rock/blues song.... but in this song must be despair, suffering and sorrownes.... and bob dylan aced it...xD

  • Beautiful ..... It really touches the soul. ♥♥ Frijid Pink & The Animal's verison are also really good, but in my opinion, this is best :)

  • I like the blues feel of this one much more. It really conveys the sadness of the situation. Gambling people into slavery. PEACE x_X

  • check out my version of House of the Rising Sun- Michelle Owen

  • he sings this song so well that you forget that it is told from a womans point of view, and while the animals version is a lot more popular i think it took a big hit artistically when it used the tone it did and did the song from a man's point of view. its a great song to listen to but it took away from the emotion, which (in my opinion) is on full display here. dave van ronk wrote this version of the song its true but i really doubt anybody could beat this performance at what it was going for

  • @whitehops101 you are spot on!!

  • this version is coo but the ANIMALS version was way better!

  • @BizCali Thanks for taking the time to watch and have an opinion; that's what this is all about. I have always loved the version by The Animals, but this one really touched me with it's sparseness.

  • Personally, i like the Animals better. Dylan is good, but i think The Animals made it more original.

  • @ConverseStar141

I think they made it more primal. You can feel the pain in the song with them. I always find it so amusing the way they are dressed. It just doesen't quite fit with the image you have when hearing this song.

Quite like the difference with The Everly Brother's song "Love Hurts" and Nazareth's interpretation of the same song.

  • wow, I love this version!! but its funny how he doesn't bother to change the lyrics "poor girl" and sinead o'connor doesn't bother to change her version from "poor boy"

  • Who cares who wrote the song bob rocked it!!

  • Best version for me. Simple and haunting as it should be.

  • Happy birthday,RIP TUPAC, RIP JIMI, RIP BILL HICKS, RIP LENNON

    ALL THE PROPHETS!

  • POET!

  • People can dislike dylan and post negative comments as far as im concerned, But hey if you are listening to dylan now then you most probably enjoying this and love music which is great. Music is personal, its "mine!!" in a way, no one can take that away from me. . . HAPPY 70th Bobbie........... RIP Bob marley RIP Sam Cooke RIP John Lennon,

  • i would like to add though, Bob Dylan did not write this song

  • @JacobFoden Do you know who did then?

  • I got goosebumps every time i hear this exact VERSION of the song...I didn't get it neither on the animals' version nor any other version...

  • baaaaaaab dylaaaaaaaannnnn

  • Thanks.

  • @vladileche - neither. It's a traditional song at least a century old, recorded as early as the 1930s by a very large number of major artists.

  • What's all this about a "Dylan version" or "Animals" version? "Rising Sun" is an old folk song that literally everyone who liked folk had heard in multiple versions decades before this - Ronnie Gilbert of the Weavers had done it on an album in the mid-50s that sold hundreds of thousands, and it was that version (adapted from Josh White's) that Dave van Ronk used - and Dylan simply covered Van Ronk, right down to the growls. Legit superstar Joan Baez also recorded a better version before BD.

  • @sensei48 "Version" does not mean "original" It doesn't matter who wrote it, when someone records a song they have created their own version.

  • Attention Bob Dylan fans! Listen to The Tallest Man on Earth, alot like Bob Dylan and an excellent artist.

  • @yelvisthecat2 Well, then, if this is true, I appreciate The Animals' version all the more for inspiring Bob to go electric...

  • i cannot bealive that there are people who dont like this!

  • this song is amazing...long live bob dylan ! =)

  • The animals made a really good cover but just too complicated and too happy for a song like this, their cover just don't have that despairing feel to it. Bob's version is classic. Dude no one can replicate his voice.

  • Animals version is way better

  • I know this will break a few hearts but i think Bobby was over rated. He did alright with this song and a couple others i have heard. Knockin on ......you know.

  • @journeyquest1 No worries; to each his own... music is in many ways a purely subjective thing, and I appreciate your respectful input.

  • @solidearthmusic subscribed because of the peaceful comments :D

  • @mynameisauk

    Hi Auk,

I have to say, I have only deleted 3 or 4 comments because they were rude or disrespectful, because I don't want that on my channel, so what you see is SLIGHTLY purified... however, 99% of people, even those who aren't big Dylan fans, have been polite and thoughtful in their comments, so I'm glad you noticed; thanks. Keep watching; I'm going to check out your channel... take care.

  • @solidearthmusic yeah I don't really love bob, neither his cover for this legendary song, but it's alright. keep it up.

  • @journeyquest1 Overrated? You might want to take a peek @ his Wikipedia page. (Just type Bob - he's the first entry.) Skip down to the Legacy section for a quick primer on what others, in and out of the music industry think of his artistry. And you might consider that he was a 20 21 year old neophyte at the time of this recording.

  • @journeyquest1

I agree. Dylan was a talented songwriter and I like this version of this song. But generally speaking, covers of his songs were far superior, e.g. House of the Rising Sun, by the Animals; Mr. Tambourine Man, the Byrds; and the absolutely phenomenal Hendrix version of All Along the Watchtower, arguably the best rock song ever recorded. Dylan had a cult following and devotees always do their utmost to boost the master

  • @journeyquest1

    I think journeyquest1 is overrated.

  • @geargfgeg Your probably right.

  • @journeyquest1 if you say he was over rated as a singer, that's possible. But if you say as a composer, that's wrong.

  • @journeyquest1

You must have a somewhat overinflated sense of self to think that your anonymous comment would break anyone's heart

  • @journeyquest1 No hearts broken, but you obviously don't see the genius of the man. He wasn't a singer for sure but he was one hell of a poet.

  • @oldhammer1966 A long time ago, I made an off-hand remark about Dylan not being a very good singer, but, hey, look what he's accomplished... I was quickly corrected by a friend who said, no, he may not have a great singing VOICE, but he is a great SINGER... and I had to agree. Gave me a whole new perspective. And, yes, a poet for sure...

  • @journeyquest1 This song was made popular by The Animals anyway lol. listen to their verson

  • @journeyquest1 ....Yeah just about every respected musician in the world over rated him as well, you should inform them sometime. By the way, where can i buy any 20 of your top albums?. Sorry is that harsh, it's as nice as i could be, i bit my tongue so hard i chewed my own head off.

  • am

    G

    D

    F

    Am

    G

    E

  • @STONEDSAPPY i think that after the Am chord, he plays a C chord, which includes the note 'G' on the 3rd fret of the 6th string. sounds great either way

  • Well not really the pace, that stays the same. But you all know what I mean. The urgency in his voice increases.

  • This is my favorite version of this song. The pain in his voice once the pace picks up gives me goosebumps.

  • @vladileche Bob Dylan first then the animals but the song goes back long before Dylan.

  • This is the best recording of this song. Nobody sings like Bob Dylan. His voice is a living legend.

  • It's a shame Jim Croce never did this song. I think he would have done a fantastic job. I do love Bob Dylan, though.

  • shelter by corrosion of conformity sounds alot like this song

  • Only Bob Dylan can sing like that!!! He's the best in his way of singing!!! Definitely him!!! <3

  • @SammyStyle no sir it isnt the guy sent me a message who sang this song.

  • @themancdogg k sorry it was a different version my bad

  • @themancdogg

I appreciate the courteous 'tone' of your writing. However, I assure you (as an owner of the album), this is Bob Dylan's version as published on his 1962 album "Bob Dylan."

  • Now i know where Nirvana got there spirits from.....

  • @alpina76 Oh, very interesting...

  • @solidearthmusic Think about "Tell me where did you sleep last night" as played unplugged by Nirvana.

  • @alpina76 That is awesome! I love that. Think of the amazing music Mr. Cobain could have shared with us, if only...

  • i live in new orleans :)

  • i love bod style, he is apart of the folk american songs

  • Still the best version.

  • 2nd best cover of this song, behind frijid pink's one.

  • i friggin love his vocals from that little section starting at 2:40

  • See yall im only a kid but this song sends chills through me.. How his voice goes and how this song makes me think of eternity, the semi sad singing and the semi sad guitar makes me thing everything is okay..

  • Best version out there, how a man with and his acoustic guitar can sound so rock'n roll is beyond me...
