  • I love this song!

  • hope i was there too. dancing with them, hehehe. one of my fave songs

  • 148 numb nuts watched this video

  • @dawson43 really why be so negative get a life

  • Do the guitarist and base player look like the Weasley brothers, or is it just me?

  • I don't think I'd try to dance to "Daniel". I'd get a beer and sit that one out.

  • @chrispmis

    That's funny right there!

  • miming in the 70's

  • Minha vida mudou depois do vídeo Palladium Mor ,

Pesquisem sobre Palladium Mor no falo sério.

  • Has anyone ever heard of dupstep? I'm 16 and all my idiot friends listen to that. Anyone else who is under 30 who likes Elton John and other artists like him other than me? (serious question)

  • I think Elton said this song was written about returning Vietnam veterans.

  • I'd never have imagined this song to be danceable until I saw this vid.. lol

  • Looks like they are dancing a little to fast to this song.

  • do you know this song is about a vet.

  • Is Cher playing drums?

  • @duncanstpt HAHA right?!

  • @duncanstpt lol

  • all i all, who can you really beat Elton? I ihink not!.

  • @TheGolferchick Boy George. >:D

  • 1973

  • Awesome footage!! Love it!!

  • THis Song Like Most of Eltons Hits a Major Cord in everyones Sprite Like no one else..

  • I've had a go at singing this great song on my channel, as Elton John is amazing and this track is one of my favourite Elton John songs. I know I can't compare to Elton John though; he's phenomenal. Cheers, Andy. :-)

  • reminded me of the good old days...beautiful song....thanks for sharing....

  • A SONG ABOUT HIS BROTHER...AND SEXUAL ABUSE

  • @treon123456 FFS...I bet you think every song that refers to "pain" is about sexual abuse.

  • I have a brother named Daniel who died away from home in 1996. The first time I heard this song I couldn't believe how accurate the lyrics were. The only difference is the headlights weren't heading for Spain...

  • No1 on my karaoke list

  • Key Double Lyric of song:"Daniel my brother, you are older than me, do you still feel the pain, of the scars that won't heal".Main/real meaning: Written about a wounded Viet Nam vet who is missed by his brother and is leaving the US after his return from the war to go live in Spain, the reason his brother is still missing him.

  • This original version will remain beautiful, but the song has shown more meaning when THIA MEGIA sang this song, and made it a mellow version. :) Love you Thia!

  • "The story was about a guy that went back to a small town in Texas, returning from the Vietnam War. They'd lauded him when he came home and treated him like a hero. But, he just wanted to go home, go back to the farm, and try to get back to the life that he'd led before. I wanted to write something that was sympathetic to the people that came home."

Elton stated on the night of Saturday, 21 October 2000 that this song is one of his all time favorite songs, and it's definitely in the top three

  • I love this song it's awesome.

  • thia megia >

  • Pretty lousy video to get over 3 million views.

  • @itsglen9646 Maybe so, but you have to understand the meaning and beautifully orchestrated talent behind this blockbuster mega hit that deservedly had got a lot of airplay on radio stations all over the U.S. circa 1973!

  • @HotBranMuffin At lest back then they didn't post things twice. I guess they couldn't have could they. Things change just like the styles. They were all living it up that is what is important in the end.

  • I grew up then, and I could not have imagined dancing to this one. It made me sad because i assumed he was singing about a brother going off to Vietnam.

  • Sweet ,Sweet Daniel.... I've missed you so

  • asong i never forget 4 more than40 years

most be the cloud on my eyes

  • the best song ever made ;D (cause im daniel too)

  • great

  • My dads family friends and a girl in my classes Anne brother Daniel was in the USAF at this time flying F-4 Phantoms and flew out of Spain and other Nato bases. That was my dream too. Dan Scace you rock!@ i dedicate this to you bro!

  • So funny seeing people trying to dance to this song. lol. Its also sad that alot of these tv shows only let people lip sync their songs which was why alot of artists hated doing the shows.

  • great! elton.....:-)

  • daniel, my brother....

  • My favorite EJ song. My youngest is named Daniel. Danny loves this song.

  • @TheKpaxx Danny boy loves this song!? Good for him!!

  • The reason I was named daniel. Beautiful and timeless song.

  • but such beautiful voice

  • gosh ugly gay

  • who knows what elton had in his head at that time..... I mean just god knows....

  • @happycat10100 ur a douche just because someone is gay doesnt mean u have to be a dick he has more talent then you bitch

  • @ViciousKillerGaming you got it wrong my friend......my brother es gay and I love him to death so

I have nothing against gays...I think elton es great and he is one of my foverites singers..so you don't need to be so mean....done

  • @ViciousKillerGaming wow, defensive much? Get it figured out, bro.

  • It's not really a dancing tune. he's missing his boyfriend..

  • @eastar49 Its about his brother, back then he couldnt really come out of the closet because it wasnt accepted back then

  • @samuelhoward70

they are actually about a real life U.S. marine called Daniel, who was injjured by a landmine in Vietnam. He was left wheelchair bound and blind. The military of the day used him for PR perposes, "A BRAVE AMERICAN, WHO GAVE FOR HIS COUNTRY", sort of thing. Television pictures showed Daniel receiving a medal in Washington, waving goodbye before boarding an aeroplane bouned for Spain (Texas).

  • Thanks, really thanks for all these sensations

  • MELLOW & AMAZIN!!!!!!!!

  • What's wrong with the people dancing, hadn't they ever heard a ballad before?

  • LOVE IT

  • Comparing the music now to the 70's and the difference in dancing,I'd say it looks like more people are taking fits now,you have to be drug induced to the pish they're playing now!!!

  • classic rimds me of the 70s

  • God those kids dance even worse than me. I'd have fit right in if I grew up during the 70s!

  • Comment removed

  • @GermanOperaSinger Thing is, those kids where told to dance, no matter if they could dance or not, or they where told to leave the studio. It was the rule on Top of the Pops....

  • @GermanOperaSinger lol...you made my night...I have not laughed that hard in awhile!!

  • @GermanOperaSinger lol...its like the floor manager was like "who gives a fuck if its not a danceable song- dance mofos, DANCE!!!"

  • @chickensw LOL! That's the funniest comment I've seen in a while :~) And, it's probably exactly what happened...

  • music for you hearts

  • Congratulations to Sir Elton John

  • Beautiful song.... Love it!!

  • one of the best songs ever written

  • He really is exceptionally brilliant.

  • doc28johnson is correct....Elton spent time with wounded veterans at a hospital and was inspired to write this song. A beautiful tribute if you ask me.

BTW- Can all of you "hono-phobics" just let it be...Elton is a musical talent gifted to the world. I for one have enjoyed his music for over 3 decades. One's personal preferences need to be left that way...personal.

  • @SuperLiftRick I agree. Musical genius is musical genius regardless what the sexual preferance

  • this sound fits into our musical history i dont know where but this guy is the master of it. i think he makes it easy to sing along to a fantastic sound that just hits a nerve man.

  • hey

  • REST IN PEACE

    DANIEL JAMES LEEK

    AUG 5, 1975- NOV 24, 2010

FRIEND, COLLEAGUE, NATUROPATHIC DOCTOR AND RESEARCHER EXTRAORDINAIRE

  • This song makes my heart break and soar at the same time.

  • DAAAAAAAAAANIEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEL.... AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!!!!!!! *-*

  • Actually it is a fictitious story about a viet nam vet who, lost his eye sight and flew off to Spain. The song is supposed to be his younger brother singing as his older brother leaves on a plane........

  • Comment removed

  • That, if I had to choose, is my FAVORITE song!!! I like Tom Cochrane's "Life is a high way" too!!

  • its such an honor to have a song written about me!

  • Elton John has some of the most awesome music ever, but I love music and I probably say this about so many songs. This one, being about someone's brother who died in Vietnam, Daniel was the star on the face of the Sky. Absolutely lovely! Thank you YouTube...

  • daniel is simple but a nice name..:)

  • look at that 70s dancing haha

  • @heavyharmony Haha,is'int it beautiful..back in a day when there wasn't violence you could actually sleep with your windows open and not have to worry about some crack head, scripthead, whatnot,Whatever, climbing in and not only stealing from you ,However, shooting you in the head..and stealing your last $5.00......Yeah,seriously,what a beautiful dance, haha

  • @doc28johnson My "Baby Daniel" (now 26 yrs old) is the Love of My Life!! I always loved this song, but never knew the meaning of the lyrics. Thanks!

  • That is ALWAYS an amazing song......no matter how often I've heard it!!!

  • Murky sound quality here. Anyway, Elton's new album The Union, with Leon Russell, is a classic!

  • Elton John is a true musical prodigy! people can't seem to get past him being gay to see the genius behind the music! that's what this site is about , isn't it! every song he writes is an instant hit and has been for many years. he's got a hard musical career for any one to beat! afterall, he's the piano man!

  • my friend Aubrey and I talked about football today, and I started liking it last Super Bowl...I know this has nothing to do w/Elton John, but this song reminds me of good friends who teach you things that you never knew/ and IT IS COOL!

  • THIS IS HORRID UPLOAD of a great song. Totally distorted!!- whoever uploaded this needs to work out the audio issues.. awful.

  • Yes Sir! kmck

  • daniel is such a weird name

  • @danielson726 Why do you say Daniel is a weird name since your name is Daniel? It's a great name for a male.

  • A great lyricist.

  • Top notch vocalist- right up there with Tom Araya and Van Morrisson.

  • A lot of teens here, who are now in their 50's.

  • Love this song. My fav Elton song. Thanks for posting it. Why judge a man by his life instead of his amazing talent.

  • Love this song. My fav Elton song. Thanks for posting it.

  • duh

  • What a song to remember

  • I was ACTUALLY, lucky enough to see him perform that song in Sault Ste. Marie, Ont June 2010!!! Phenomenal!!! All the hits, we LOST our MINDS!!! Standing Ovations every song! So grateful he came here, but also, so grateful he seemed to be happy to be here! 2 hours 55 minutes!!!! 6,200 people(sold out) of course! He actually STILL came here!!! Thank you!!

  • @LilWayneMetalGod its not about who he marries but HOW HE SINGS... And i bet that lil wayne is more stupid than monkey!!!

  • @LilWayneMetalGod Why did you come to see the video? Because he sucks? Because that makes perfect sense. Or do you go to videos of people you think sucks to post that they suck? That makes sense also. Maybe you could look into getting a hobby?

  • Elton looks funny in this retro look

  • While this song is open to interpretation, it isn't necessarily about a guy who died in Vietnam, or Bernie Taupin's brother. Taupin himself suggested it was about a guy who *returned* from Vietnam with war scars.

  • never be afraid of yourself, be true and do your thing and you too can be a Knight,

whether you're gay or straight... class and acclomplishment will win the day....trust me look at the roll call there is no slouches there

  • @Tdwagable Amen, amen, AMEN!

  • LIKE.....a lot...thank you Elton...:)

  • impressive doc ... now get over yourself

  • I've always loved this song!

  • Amazingly shitty sound quality. Thanks.

  • gosto muiinnnto desta cançao; bela letra

  • good lip sync....I'd replace the audio with better CD sourced audio.

Rock on Reg...Write more lyrics, Bernie...

  • GOOD. Just how I remember it. Thank you. xx

  • seems odd that they would have people dancing while listening to such a poignant and sad tribute to a maimed Vietnam war veteran, busted up physically, mentally and spiritually, trying to find solace in a place as far as he can get from the 'Nam. Vietnam, like any place of war, was one horrific place...

  • it's not actually about going to viet nam it was about a spanish war elton john cut down the original song by a lot look up the whole song and it mentions stuff about spain

  • luv my wee bro daniel hes called after this song

  • This song makes me wonder, deep really...

  • What a great singer and beautiful song. Love it !

    Regards from Israel :)

  • I think this is my favorite song by Elton. He is one of those uncommon song-writter singers that has the ability to connect to any one who will 'listen' to his music

  • as verdadeiras musicas se eternizam! belas demais

  • ...it's a song about his first wife...Her name was daniel...they were best friends-close like brothers...that is only a comparation...It's a great song...I love it!

  • Daniel Cleaves, my best friend in high school when I was an exchange student. Where are you?...I miss you.

  • Quanto è bella questa canzone di Elton.

  • This song is boss. It's so heartbreakingly beautiful. So boss. Lol.

  • best name in the world!!:D

  • This song reminds my of my dad, ypu lives very far away, in my parents divorce my dad went through alot of pain, alot of unheals scars, and every time I watch him go I think of this song,,

    to you daddy, Daniel Ray

  • It is impossible for me to listen to this song without thinking of SOMEONE, ANYONE, named Daniel who has died. Pick a town anywhere in the US and it seems that someone named Daniel died much too young and this song was dragged out at the funeral.

  • this is a classic

  • i named my son with the thought of this song in my mind...oh God i miss daniel oh i miss him so much really makes me cry...

  • R.I.P Daniel I miss u Big Bro

  • keep on toking !

  • one of his best songs!

  • I love this song and remember it from 7th grade. It was on the charts the same time as Danny's song. Being a Daniel it can't forget. Also my dads best friend had a son named Daniel that flew F-4 Phatom jet for the USAF and I thought of him since he actually flew in Spain and EU for USAF in Europe the 1970's. Must be the clouds in my eyes!

  • i was named daniel cauz of this song lol...its so amazing hear my name from this semi-god singer..

  • @dadenel Me to brother. I only just now stopped excepting the name "Dan" and chose "Daniel" as my name...

  • Im a total headbanger but i have a weakness for piano music .... my mom would play all elton songs on her baby grand when i was growin up

  • @tuggydatiger that is so lovely :)

  • Pure class man. I'm a drum and bass head and I feel this to the core. Legend.

  • elton in my heart

  • me & my Girlfriend used to listen to her moms old Elton John Collection and this was one of the songs she really liked! She's been Gone to heaven for sometime now and she is a star on the face of the sky and thats how I wanna remember her Elton is a True music Legend! Who gives a Rats Ass whether he is gay or not!

  • its a song about someones brother who died in viet nam after being in the military for some time doing tours of duty through spain. i.e. daniel your a star on the face of the sky means he is dead and thats how his brother wants to remember him as a star in the sky. do your research. i have every album elton john made and i do mean vinyl

  • @doc28johnson No. Bernie Taupin wrote "Daniel" while inspired by the events of the Vietnam War. The lyrics (including a verse in the original draft that was cut from the final version) describe a fictional veteran who was blinded as a result of the war ("your eyes have died"/"but you see more than I") and travels to Spain to escape those around him back home ("do you still feel the pain"/"of the scars that won't heal?"), including his brother, from whose point of view the story is told.

  • ""Daniel" had been the most misinterpreted song that we'd ever written," explained Bernie, in the Two Rooms tribute project. "The story was about a guy that went back to a small town in Texas, returning from the Vietnam War. They'd lauded him when he came home and treated him like a hero. But, he just wanted to go home, go back to the farm, and try to get back to the life that he'd led before. I wanted to write something that was sympathetic to the people that came home."

  • @doc28johnson ahh vinyl! the time when data had meaning, not just a heap of space.

  • @doc28johnson - Dude I'm not questioning your dedication to Elton John, however my research from multiple sources (NOT including Wikipedia) shows that this song was about a Vietnam vet who escapes to Spain to get away from his home town after the war and try and get his life back to normal. Does the original album the songs on (if I'm not mistaken its the "dont shoot me im only the piano player" album?) talk about the origin of the lyrics?

  • @doc28johnson GOD DAMN MOTHER FUCKING SON OF A BITCH YOU ARE SOO COOOOL

  • @doc28johnson, its not about Daniel dying it's about him loosing his sight and leaves to live in spain after the war. The two brothers drift a part becasuse Daniel needs to get away

do you still feel the pain"/"of the scars that won't heal?"

  • @doc28johnson The song is about Daniel, a vietnam vet who, rather that losing his life in Vietnam, returns to his home town in Texas and is unable to readjust - leaving to start a new life for himself in Spain.

  • @MsGuernseyGirl i tought that daniel was himself .. i heard in the radio the story
