The AMIGA one is the original and best version for this game. Every other version has stuff like censored or changed enemies and the FM Towns is just a straight 16-bit to 32-Bit AMIGA port I think anyway.
i have this on amiga 500, pc engine turbo duo, r and rx, also got it on fm towns marty. i know theres alot of amiga is the best on this topic, i can understand that, but for me , the marty version is the best, 32 bit, ;-) check out my vid
The Amiga version is most regarded as the classic I think, on account of the jaw dropping graphics and sound at the time. As it was diluted to other systems which just couldn't handle those things, the rose coloured spectacles faded to reveal the reality of its average gameplay.
Its one of those games you had to have played originally to appreciate it which I hadn't so I was confused at why it was a classic in many people's eyes. However we all have games we like but we know aren't very good. Great commentary Luke, I think you summed up its appeal and shortcomings very well. :)
SOTB was originally an Amiga 500 tech demo - that got made into a full game and was a big hit back in 1989... The gameplay was very basic and frustrating, but the atmosphere was compelling... The Amiga version is the best looking.
"In a world where everything you can imagine is being endlessly flung at you from the left and right of the screen, how can a purple monster thingy survive? Your only hope is to traverse endlessly into an abysmal pit in search of the Bamboo Machinegun! If things get too hot to handle, just jump onto a nearby ladder, where you instantly shrink and are transformed into Dobby the magical house-elf. You can do it. After all, your character has 6 more frames of animation than your foes!"
The American Genesis version is worse, they fucked the porting and made it run 16.7 frames faster. Its just...UGH...The game is pretty looking, and the original Amiga version was brutally beautiful. The difficulty just makes you want to throw your controller, though.
@sekretsu Many early AMIGA games run in 60hz as well as 50hz. It depends on if the screen crops whether you decide to play it on 50 or 60 settings on your machine or emulator.
Great video Luke. I love this game for the Amiga. It has even better sound and graphics on that platform and believe it or not it's even more brutal thanks to the lack of continues. Great to see it on the PC Engine and I'll definitely get it if ever get the CD ROM drive for me.
Looks really cool Luke.. I definatly need to get a PC Engine.. It's one of the only systems I do not own.. Thanks for sharing the game looks pretty cool.
Great video, this game is worth playing just for the soundtrack itself! The Amiga 500 version is indeed the best one; it has better graphics and frankly I prefer the original soundtrack to this remixed CD-ROM one. I also rather play the Japanese Mega Drive (not the US Genesis) version of Shadow of the Beast over this one since it's a closer port to the original Amiga game.
Nice Video Luke. I have to say that, IMHO, the Amiga version is the better version and the nostalgic side of me will always love the music of the Amiga game. However, I would love to play a version of the game that's the Amiga graphics and sound effects but with the PC Engine soundtrack, because this soundtrack is just stunning.
I've been really getting into collecting for the system as of late, especially imports, and I'm curious Luke. Aside from some of the more obvious choices like Dracula X, and Gunhed/Blazing Lazers, what are some of your favorite titles to look out for on the Pc-Engine??
This was typical for games developed outside of Japan back when it came out. Absolutely horrible gameplay. No thought put into enemy placement or A.I. At least the game looks and sounds good.
Yeah, this game is really brutally tough! PepAlacant put up a video of this one running of the FM-Towns computer, I know you also own the FM-Towns as I remember you picked one up at hard off years ago. Nice video!
I have this for the Amiga 500 as well as its 2 sequels. This is a good version of the game, BUT the Amiga version is still better. This is the game that got me to buy an Amiga all those years ago.
Nice graphics, very unique and spectacular for the time when the game came out. I had this game on the atari st, and it was pretty unplayable there too. Psygnosis made some nice looking games, but the early ones were lacking playability. Have you tried Leander? That was a sidescrolling Psygnosis game that had better playability, I had a chance to play the demo and it seemed pretty cool.
I'm sorry but this is the best version of Shadow of the Beast out there. I got this game when it first came out and the graphics and the soundtrack were pretty intense for the time. Play the genesis version and you'll go running for the duo version. My love for this game is bias with great memories. Great video.
I have this for the Amiga, the version I have is much harder as you can't change the health or credits. All atmosphere no gameplay unfortunately. Luke you should look up shadow of the beast 3 for the amiga, it's the only game in the series that really works. It's a little short but the gameplay is there.
Yes, as previously mentioned, the original Amiga version was gorgeous for its time (1989) and I strongly recommend that you take a look at it (at least on Youtube), Luke. It it somewhat slower than the PC Engine version (thus giving the player better reaction time) and has a few different(/better?) design choices! It has a slightly more haunting feel to it as well and-- OH YES that music is a thing of beauty~!
@Banzeken yeh i remember it was the BIG exclusive game for 16-bit home computers like Amiga and Atari ST. didnt come out on the Megadrive later did it? remember Zool, they tried to push that as a mario/sonic killer lol
@Polaventris Quite different really. PC Engine has an 8-bit 65C02, Amiga had 16-bit 68000, although strangely they both run at 7.16 MHz. They both have custom graphics and sound chipsets too, but developed by independently by Hudson and Commodore.
I still need to find a copy of this for the GEN...everyone and there Grandmother seems to have played it. Damn...you could make a sandwich, eat, digest it and then take a nap with all that load time. o_0
On a side note.... don't knock food from an oil drum if you haven't tried it...lol
hey luke just wondering if u have come across any 6 button controllers for the pcengine as im after one for when i grab street fighter 2 for my pc engine
This was originally released on Amiga. The level of graphics the game achieved at the time was revolutionary on the system. Lots of colors and up to 12 layers of parallax background scrolling and it would run on a standard A500 with 512kb ram.
wow never even knew there was a PC engine version of this game, i knew of the Amiga and Mega Drive versions through, but yeah this game does have a beyond insane diffculty to it, least going from when i played the Mega Drive version
Some of those flying eyeballs were flying Psygnosis logos in the original I think.

Did you play the Amiga original? I quite like that game, despite how flawed it is.
Btw, that boss just before you climb up the well goes down a lot faster if you collect the power punch potion first.

@wrestletube1 Well as well as if it runs in 60hz which judging by the amount of 60hz ports this got I wouldn't mind betting it can.

@wrestletube1 The Genesis version was improperly ported..Strangley the Japanese US version ran at the correct speed. Maybe us in the US Got a beta?
