Wow that was amazing. I never was thinking of which instrument they played at the beginning. I heard that Jonsi had a special method playing the guitar with a cello bow, though but I didn't realize that he is using it in Svefn-n-englar. .
I am playing with an orchestra at the moment, the collective value of the cello section's bows(10 cellists) is in excess of £120,000. The collective value of their instruments is well over half a million.
The soloist (Natalie Clein) - use google if you don't know about her, has a cello and bow worth approx 3 million.
I think I know what I am talking about, I am not being ridiculous.
Ugh. What the hell. What the hell, what the hell. I have tried about 17 times to come up with a witty retort for this, but I'm just so depressed that so many of us cellists are so stuck up about music. God damn it. Really. Please lighten up. He's making music. It's soulful. It's soothing. Why are you even on the internet. God damn it.
thaanks! (: i'm planning on doing a rerecord of it. i've become a lot better at using the bow now (ive started using it with my band) and i've got some new reverb gear making it sound even more awesome. i just need to finish an EP with my band before i do it, so check back later!!
LOVED this video. For one -> You did an AWSOME job! I must say.
2 -> Can you kind of... Tell me how you did it? I know what you used, from the video, but I mean... Do you tab or anything for it. I'm just wondering because I've been trying to do this song for the past little while now, and can't get a hold of it as of yet.
thanks aloot. it's good to hear that others are fascinated by this bowguitareffect too! instead of just trying to explain how i do it with words, i think i'm going to record a new vid, explaining what i do. i've also learnt a few new techniques that i think bring the sound even closer to the original. i'll record them as well. give me a few days!
LOl that must have taken a lot of rosin on ur bow, otherwise it would have been probably worse than nails on a chalk board, that was realy cool ive allways wonderd how a guitar would sound with a cello bow
thanks! glad you liked it (: it did take me some time to find the right amount of rosin, yeah. i've now discovered a few new ways to use the bow on the guitar - techniques that make it sound more like the guitar in the original sigur rós song, especially the first 4-5 notes. i'll record it and put it up as soon as i find the time!
Quite a unique (and may I say interesting) approach there, young lad. I have a sensitive ear for buzzing strings, but thankfully this was very nice and tidy. Nicely executed, indeed!
Is this in standard tuning?

The sound quality of the video makes the louder parts a little rough, but its such a dreamy sound I really like the video and your playing!
Thumbs up

sounds pretty good id say! get yourself a rat and a a better (or another) reverb and maybe a delay and youre pretty much there
and jonsi breaks bows because he attacks his guitar with it. ive had the same bow for about a year now and havnt even had to restring it.

How much does a cello bow cost?
kusss1 3 years ago
next to nothing
Septimius 3 years ago
You can get a really cheap one for around $75 but i bet it would be kinda crappy. usually around $200 for a decent one
ILoveHisGoldenEyes 3 years ago
at the rate Jónsi gets through bows, I doubt he's spending $200 on each one, unless he gets a discount for buying in bulk.

I highly doubt anyone goes through bows a lot. You need to replace the strings, not the bow.
Inresurrection 3 years ago
He throws his bows into the crowd at end of gigs so he needs new bows whether the strings are torn to pieces or not.
thesurgeon 3 years ago 2
actually jonsi breaks the bows completely quite frequently . he broke two in one night when i saw them live!

Wow.

A decent cello bow and to be honest you are looking at paying over £2000.
But I suppose if your going to play a guitar with it, using such bad technique it makes very little difference.

Two thousand for a bow? Don't be ridiculous.

Im not being ridiculous.

@Clarkedj2140 Don't be a pretentious twat, money doesn't make music.

Money doesn't make music.....
Yeh I agree
but to get a decent instrument you'll have to fork out a fair amount
especially stringed instruments.
Although if your going to do this with it a cheap shit cello bow will be perfectly adequate,
You are correct.

Why the hell are people marking Clarkedj2140's comments down? He's telling the truth, good bows cost a lot of money.
