..oh look, people bitching a who's better, wilco or son volt. y'all must be bored as shit, to argue such a shitty argument. enjoy them both like i do, or enjoy either one and keep your negativities about the other to yourself
Anyone that says Jeff Tweedy and Wilco are not equal, much less better than Jay are insane! Wilco rocks and Jeff's lyrics and melodies are so much better since being unchained from Jay: Jay is an egomaniac. Wilco has successfully put out album after album in several styles. Uncle Tupelo was good. However, they seem infantile when compared to Wilco.
@mconolly Right you are. Wilco just has done some great songs and Jeff writes more interesting songs, better melodies and lyrics by a mile, . Sometimes Jeff' or Wilco flop but they reach much higher highs and Son Volt never leaves their country roots. Sometimes they almost sound like crazy horse but then comes the country .. sorry not a fan of country-alt usually so I should shut up but I love the hate mail.
Uncle Tupelo was something special and all three members were essential. Taken apart, Jay is the force. His voice, cadence and lyrics are fantastic and Son Volt is really Uncle Tupelo II, much better with Mike's perfectly sloppy percussion. I will never understand Wilco's attraction. Tweedy's whiney voice with no balls and no clever lyrics. I had the privilege of opening for Uncle Tupelo several times in the 80's and I will never forget those times.
@olddude1800 I think they are both clever in there own rights. Jeff is a great poet without Jay... I'm from St. Louis, what band did you play for? My only problem with Jeff is he forgot where he came from. As far as Wilco goes they are in there peak, while Jay will always be Jay and you have to love him for it.
yeah , i didn't know if it was just me , but the wilco songs to me , are sloppy , and the melodies are not catchy . Apparently i'm in the minority , but i dig Farrar much better than tweedy .
@friendofsyd I totally agree with you. Just had an extensive conversation about Wilco and Son Volt. Jay Farrar is the genius - unfortunately Wilco has had more commercial success.
We are the minority , but I know that genuine ears usually are . Happy to be in good company. Jay is an asshole yes , but theres something not so sincere with Wilco , i cant put my finger on it , but then again , Jeffs not the one who put Tupelo on the map . . ....
when in doubt move on....no need to sort it out. can't get enough of farrar's lyrics and music... from UT to sonvolt one of the best song writers and voices out there...keep it up Jay!

Love this band but this is the definition of "phoning it in". Totally uninterested performance.

don't really see the volt/farrar fans trolling the wilco boards. Speaks volumes as to the difference between the two bands.

@friendofsyd No wait--I'm in. Wilco--they are good, but this led me to all that and I prefer this.

Jeff Tweedy is a tool. All the ignorant folks look away. Farrar is the true genius.

Very tight performance. I wish I could see Jay's guitar brand. It looks like a sweet axe. Thanks for posting.

Looks like a Gretsch Jet Firebird to me.

I'm sure you're right. The Bigsby would suggest Gretsch. I'll have to look that up. Thanks.

Its a Gretsch Jet Firebird. And it is, indeed, a sweet axe.
