There were a few differences between the 96-97 and 98-99 model years...Most noticeable was the front emblem in the grille (except 96-99 SHO's which always had the blue oval in the grille), a different designed lower front opening, and of course, the discontinuation of the amber turn signals in the back for 98-99...and I think the GL and LX changed to LX and SE (respectively) in '98....
on my taurse, it idles at 700-800rmps in drive at a redlight, and when its in park it idles at like 1100-1200rpms .. Sometimes randomly the idles go up and down to like 500-1200, back down to like 200- 1500.. weird.
Everyone can have the blue cluster 96-99, the cluster panels are actually blue, but the original yellow incandescent lamps behind the cluster create that nasty green color. Just go on e-bay and find bright white #194 Replacement automotive LED bulbs and put them in your car's dash. Search google for instructions. I did the LED swap and it looked just like that in my dark blue 1997 Taurus. Looked cool, don't have video's of it though. :/ Make sure to get HIGH QUALITY led's, or you will be sorry.
@dzava The 99's came with a similar cluster to the 2000-2003 models, yet only the 99's came with the blue lights. If you wanted them i believe you can remove a cluster from a 99 taurus in the junkyard, then open it up and pull the speedometer, tach and temp/fuel gauges, and then plug them into your Gen IV cluster, keeping your original circuit board. All you need to do is unscrew the plastic cover on the front, remove the black bezel around the gauges, and literally just pull them out.
@99taurusse Yes, I can see the gauges look similar to mine. Maybe Ill find something, but I dont mind having those green ones... the thing I love the most on my Taurus is the sound :) and even my second car - BMW doesnt have that rough sounding engine
i wouldn't think of it so much as a problem but more as a normality. my mom's '05 sable with the duratec does that on a cold start also. it does not do it however in the summer time, only when the weather is rather cold. i'm pretty sure it happens with all cars.
@Uuuuuu15 The only thing is that it also did it after it was warmed up, I always had to wait like 10-20 seconds to put it in gear because I didn't want to ruin the torque converter. I don't have the car anymore, my cousin bought it from me, and she hasn't complained about it. She also has a 200 mile round trip commute every day, so she already has like 130,000 mi on the car and nothing's gone wrong. These cars are bulletproof if properly maintained.
My 99 has a high idle at startup as well.....also it seems as if Im using alot of gas. The car has 195,000kloms and I changed the plugs and wires about 15,000kloms ago but I still only get about 400 kloms to a tank of gas. When low gas light comes on, I drive it for a bit than go to fill up but when filling up the car will only take about 45 litres of gas??? Doesnt this car have a 61 litre tank?
@CerebralAssassin1977 Exactly! I have the same thing. I think, my gas gauge is shot, but in my fuel tank i do not put more like 40 ltrs. I dont understand it.
@PetrScorpio I recently kept driving the car even though the gas light was on and ended up pushing it to 430 kloms and when i went to fill it up it took 54 litres of gas. So I know I can get at lease 430 to a tank which still isnt that great considering it costs me $59 to fill it. So thats like $0.14/per klom.
just dug up a 99 taurus SE wagon from a friend of mine it has no body/engine or interior damage just been sitting there in the yard also a bit sun burned, first step would be to flush the engine and try a start with new blood ? just wondering :S
@bique10 They came with the car, I think only the 99 models had them. I also have a 2002 with green lights. I'm not sure if the bulbs are colored or if the gauges themselves are colored.
I changed out the idle air controll valve, It's a $90 part that you can instal yourself, stopped it for mine but mine would rise and drop to low. Check it out. Love this car, Mine is rusted as hell under but after a new muff and plugs & wires still starts and stay running.
can anyone please tell me 1.how to replace dashboard/instrument cluster lights and 2. how to remove the front door panels. I would greatly appreciate it. oh and TAURUS FOR LIFE!
It seems normal. A lot of engines are at high rev at cold start. My vulcan and duratech do the same. Vulcan idles at about 1800 rpm cold and duratech at about 1500
I still haven't figured it out, and it wasn't even that bad in this video. Sometimes it sticks at above 2000 rpm for like 10 seconds then goes down. I've replaced a bunch of things like the IAC valve and other vacuum lines, but I still can't figure it out. I think only the Duratec's do this, I've never seen a Vulcan taurus have this problem...
Mine would do the same but start to idle to low and almost stall, The new IAC seemed to help but still starts high in the cold (lower than it did b4) Must be norm.

@99taurusse I had a 96 vulcan and it used to idle around 1700rpm and then go down, i thin its just cold and it warming up. but im not to sure

@99taurusse Idle settings are messed up, Disconnect the battery for 30 secs, reconnect it then start the car and allow it to learn idle settings.
