LOL at Herbstreit when Holtz is talking about the 71' Nebraska team and Herbstreit says- "Great team, the best ever." You just said that you thought the 86' Penn St. team was better. Make up your mind.
Let me say that the 95 huskers took the gators who were at least a two touchdown favorite I may add and clobbers them by nearly 40 points. By the way that 71 team passed alot the option didn't become a stable point til the early 80s!
@TheMrsamuelson Yeah just because I don't root for a crappy football team that is my life and don't live in the most boring state in the union I must suck nuts
i agree w/Herbie on The U (2001) being one of the top canidates of the greatest college football teams of all time, but now if we're comparing whose better than the Huskers in 71' i guess i would have to give an edge to The U speed kills and the talent of the Hurricanes was no question..
Every game in 95 for the Huskers was a blow out.. you could have taken Nebraska's score by halftime, except for 2 games (Washington State and Florida) and we still would have won. Yea, i'd say 95 Nebraska was the best team ever.
both Nebraska teams are better than both of Herbstreit's teams USC 04 and Miami 01... and they were both busted for cheating... they cant even cheat their way to the top.. it took Tom Osborne a while, but look what he did.. 1995 HUSKERS. Best Team Ever.
@madhazzer hey dumbass I don't know where your from but hitting the caps lock button doesn't get your point across better. Two football games are one day a week so yeah were gonna make Saturday special here in Nebraska, and three just because Nebraska is the fourth winningest college football program of all time with 3 heisman winners, 5 national championships, and the best academic all American players in the nation doesn't mean you have to hate on us because were the best to ever play the gam

Your all dumbasses who think that Miami '01 is better than '95 Nebraska. The only reason you guys are saying that is because the players on the miami team became good NFL players. Nebraska played as a team and had one of the best coaches in all time in Tom Osborne. Miami's QB would get throttled by the blackshirts!! Are you serious?? That was by far the best defense of all time, no doubt. Im not saying they would blow out Miami, they would be the better team though.
@june1683 - great analysis June. Very insightful. Let me remind you, everyone on Nebraska's D behind the D line were black. And, other than Warren Sapp (and maybe Russell Maryland), name a D lineman at the U better than any of the four we started, all white, in '95. Christian and Jason Peter, Jared Tomich and Wistrom on the ends...the brothers you run in and out can't hang there. '01 was a good team but your declarative on mopping '95 NU is silly
@june1683 dude face it...95 nebraska had by far more talent then 01 miami, and i think your confused, im pretty sure its the other way round, your more likely to find inbreds in the southern states kinda like where miami is located *eh hum* get a clue bro
i really think mark and kurt missed having experienced the wrath of the big red MOchine up close...all the others have experienced it first hand and know better....effin choir boys...go put on more makeup.
NU was fantastic, but the stats that are looked at are often misleading and the information passed by is often telling. The "NU would kill '01 Miami, they rushed for 400 every game" nonsense doesn't fly if you watched NU that year. I think they could very well beat '01 Miami, but NU didn't just roll up every one on the ground.
@sribble1 yes they did lmao. 400 yards per game does not lie. Its not a thrown around # it is fact. Check the stats. I went to 2 or 3 games that year. Each of them Nebraska ran for 500 yards and threw for around 100-150. Their was no question that the 95 Nebraska team was the best and it was voted country wide as so.
@Tim8573 let me refresh you: vs. Kansas - 51 rushes 289 yards, 375 total yards. vs Oklahoma - 56 rushes 271 yards, 407 total yards. vs Colorado - 54 rushes 226 yards, 467 total yards. vs kstate - 46 rushes 190 yards, 338 total yards. Those are the stats for the 3 top 10's we played and our chief rival, albeit after a bye week, Oklahoma. And, I actually watched the OU and Kstate games on Youtube, all 2.5 hours. We did not blow them out offensively. They couldn't move the ball; get the facts plz
@Tim8573 I'm not saying Nebraska wasn't great. We just didn't roll everyone like scores indicated. I actually think the defense was better than the offense on that team, at least against the top 10 that year. Proof, watch the videos. Even Florida had some chances they blew...we were better, but if Hilliard doesn't short arm three catches, we don;t get the ball back and Florida is in position to score. Football is a big momentum game, and NU stole it from UF that day...
To summarize: the Big 8 was the best conference that year. 4 teams in the top 10 with each losing to Nebraska and beating each other. Games were over in the 3rd...stats could have been worse for opponents. And stats don't tell the whole story. NU had trouble on the ground against 4 opponents at least in '95. Florida had some chances to keep it close. Hilliard alligator armed at least 3 big throws from Danny. And, that FLA team was pretty good winning it the next year.
4. The Florida team that NU beat won the NC the next year. That's saying something. They were a very good team in '95 and a champion in '96.
5. in '96 Fiesta Bowl looked like a route, and it was, but Florida had some opportunities to make it closer. A few better reads by Weurffel and if Hilliard doesn't short arm 4 throws, the game is a little closer. I've watched that game 12 times (have it on dvd), it was bad for Florida, but they had chances to keep it close
2. Nebraska played in the toughest conference that year. A telling sign is not records or rankings at the end of the year only but bowl wins. This is the time you flex against other conferences. CU, K St, Kansas and Nebraska all won bowls. Impressive. And, the reason the other Big 8 schools struggled...look at the conference
3. Nebraska averaged 8 points in the 4th quarter. They were up on average 45-10 after 3. So, stats don't really tell the story. 3rd stringers are running around
I am a die hard Nebraska fan and have been watching them faithfully since 1988.
I have watched more videos and read more articles on them. Many of the latter do not know what they are talking about. Here are my thoughts on the '95 team:
1. There were games they had trouble moving the ball. The first half against Oklahoma was rough. The Wazzu game was tough to move the ball on them. Colorado relegated NU to a lot of passing. Kansas also played well defensively -'95 Nebraska struggled some
Desperate for air time.......it's like comparing a 1999 computer to a 2009 computer........it's not even logical.......might as well compare WW1 with Desert Storm......too many variables........
unfortunate it was my teams in final but im sure 95 skerz would kill ne team out there cuz well look at the body of work ppl said they was underdogs in title game vs florida n they made them look like raw meat come on
hahaha i love Lee, this gets me pumped for College Gameday on Saturday mornings. Anyway Kirk has a point, I don't think the 2 Nebraska teams were the best two, there was obviously a bigger turnout of voters from Nebraska than the other teams.
No question! I don't know much about the '71 team, but that '95 team was incredible. I like Herby, but he is waaaay off on this. I watched that '95 squad every week (I lived in Omaha at the time). I couldn't stand Nebraska football, so don't call me a homer. '95 WITHOUT A DOUBT!!!!!
1995 Florida (Team and year Nebraska beat 62-24) Final Stats:
Before Nebraska Game: Avg Score W 44.5-16.8
After Nebraska Game: Avg Score W 42.9-20.2
Many considered Nebraska to be the underdog in this game. Nebraska had the best rush defense in the nation and against Florida's pass heavy offense the score going into the 6th minute of the 4th quarter was 62-18 and was 62-24 off of a kickoff return due to NU not caring too much. Nebraska also knelt on the 1 yard line as time expired.
'95 Nebraska had no non-conference opponents (none were ranked), Oklahoma was 2-5 that season in the conference (down big time), and Texas wasn't in the league. They skated to the championship beating the likes of Kansas, Missouri, etc... Best team ever? What a joke.
@scarletshrapnel Kansas State FINISHED #8 (final score 49-25), Kansas finished #10 (final score 41-3), Colorado FINISHED #5 (Final score 44-21). Washington State gave up 428 RUSH yards to Nebraska. Over the entire season WSU gave up an average of 162.4 rush yards/game. Your COMMENT is a joke.
@scarletshrapnel The lowest amount of points they scored in a game was 35. They played three top ten teams toward the end of the regular season and beat each of them by more than 20 points. And they put up over 60 points four times in the season, including a 62-24 dismantling of the #2 team in the nation, Florida. They had third-string players in for almost the entire fourth quarter of the national championship for crying out loud!
Da U in 01' almost lost to BC and VT. 95" Skers rolled everybody. Its funny to me how Herby gets all mad! All we have out here is NU football and we love it! Like Corso said "GET OVER IT!" lol!
herbsteit just doesn't like nebraska. I mean, did the 04'Usc team dominate every single opponent on the schedule including the national championship? I believe not. 95 huskers are the best team to step on college football turf, period the end
the 95 huskers were the best ever period. the best teams ever cant play eachother obviously but they can see how they did against the teams they played during the year and no one has ever dominated their opponets like the 95 husker team miami from 01 was a great team 05 texas and the usc teams were good but none of the good teams of recent times or teams from the past were as good against opponets as the 95 cornhuskers
Here's a website with a complex system used in determining the best college football team of all time. 1995 Nebraska is ranked 1st by quite a bit. Plus 1971 Nebraska is ranked 3rd, the 1997 Nebraska team is ranked 5th, and if you include teams that didn't go undefeated the 1983 Nebraska is still ranked 13th. 95' wasn't our only good year.
im sorry they are all forgetting about the 97 michigan team who had arguablly the best defense that ever stepped on the field allowed an average of only 43 yds rushing a game
It's not about how those teams would play today's teams, that's an unfair comparison. It's two totally different styles of football. It's about what those teams did IN THEIR TIME. The '71 Cornhuskers held their opponents to an average 7 points a game. The '95 Cornhuskers completely smothered every team they played, the closest score was 35-21. Those were the two greatest football teams ever.
From an Arkansas fan who has enough sense to see the obvious, unlike Herbie.
you call yourself a college football analyst kirk? if ur an analyst how come u said the 1995 cornhuskers didn't play anybody? they beat 4 top ten teams which no other national champion has done that
Don't forget that U$C of 2004 never even played the second best team that year, that being an undefeated Auburn team out of the SEC. Ya the same SEC that has produced the last 5 national titles. Not saying U$C would not have won but we will never know for sure. By the way would love to put that 95 Nebraska team against the 2004 U$C team and watch the O Line for Nebraska wear the hell out of U$C.
Screw kirk Herbsteit, we didnt have to pas the ball in '71 because we didnt HAVE TO! Nebraska is an amazing team and i dont care what anybody, even Herbstreit, says!
I love how they all sit there saying they don't know much about 71 Nebraska with BARRY SWITZER, who coached against 71 Nebraska, is just sitting over there completely silent. Hey guys, how about you SHUT UP and listen to someone who would actually have something worthwhile to contribute.
herby is such a fucking usc lover. its funny he played for ohio st. and the only reason why usc seemed all good cuz they get homered. People just cant admit 95' Nebraska was God's created team.
woodAfrica....I'm glad you're defending the Huskers, but Tom Osborne did not create the spread offense in 71. He wasn't even the head coach. If anyone did it was Bob Devaney cuz he was the coach at the time.
@subwayg16 You're half right Deveney was the head coach but Osborne was the offensive coordinator who revamped offense with a balanced attack operated from the I formation. The spread offence has been used for a long long time. TCU used it in the 1950s.
1971 Nebraska did not run the option. They didn't start running the option until the early 80's with Turner Gill. 71 Nebraska threw the ball out of the I-form and Tagge went to the NFL as a passing quarterback.
now as someone who knows nebraska football the 71 team ran what we know today as the spead offense. thats right tom osborne created the spead offense.
@woodAfrica2010 Tom Osborne wasn't the coach in 71 so he couldn't have come up with the spread. He was just an assistant. Devaney was pry the one to come up with it if it did in fact start at Nebraska.
Herbie was right. The '95 team was really really good and deserved to be there, but the '71 team had no business being in the top four. '01 Miami, '04 'SC, and '05 Texas were way better. Its a joke.
"I wish people in south florida and in southern california get espn classic." you would think they would have espn classic before us nebraskans. kirk is a bitch
Herbstreit is an idiot and a joke. For a professional he doesn't know jack squat. 95 Nebraska didn't play anybody? Seriously? They annihilated 4 top 10 teams by an average score of 49-18, averaging more than 400 rushing yards per game! No doubt the 95 Huskers are the greatest team of all time. Suck it Herbstreit! GBR!
@coolsouthernrain75 I saw the 1972 Orange Bowl where Nebraska destroyed a good Bammer team by 38-6. Nebraska also defeated OU that year and was by far the best ever. And I am a USC Trojan guy. OUr 1972 team was close. And so was the 2004 squad.
"Did Nebraska throw in 1971?" Nice job taking such an ardent stand on a team you obviously know nothing about. What are you even doing on this show if you don't know anything about sports prior to 1985? The '71 Nebraska team, as well as the 1995 Nebraska team were hardcore, power option, defensive powerhouses. I wasn't around for '71 but I would love to watch the '95 team play anyone, anywhere, anytime & absolutely CRUSH em. If you don't think so, watch some tape from the '95 Fiesta Bowl
@Estavida17 Well, another thing Kirk and Lou got wrong about the 71 Nebraska team is that they ran the option. Nebraska didnt start running the option until Tom Osborne became the coach. But you're right. Kirk doesnt know shit about the 71 team. I think the only 2 games Nebraska was televised in 71 was the Oklahoma game and Alabama
05 Texas team is the best. They beat two heisman winners in USC and NO ONE can stop Vince Young in the Collegiate Level. Hell, he's killing most in not all of the NFL teams he plays. I think there's too many Nebraska fans with time on their hands..seeing that they've sucked since 98 that explains why.
@smilebruce anyone with a fucking brain can see that 1995 nebraska is the best of all time. 2005 texas almost lost their game in 2005. You cant be the best of all time when you almost lost. 2005 texas wouldnt score 10 points on 95 nebraska. its no contest. and nebraska doesnt suck anymore. now texas and usc both suck. so whats up now????
@Mr420woo hey way to jinx your own team man. saying texas sucks and then they come out and lock your team down for four quarters. proving taylor martinez is no more than a running back taking snaps at QB! That was beautiful to see.
@ejvols4 actually taylor martinez can throw they just have sucky wide recievers that game martinez threw some great passes he threw some bad ones too. but the point is, is that they dropped 8 passes 4 were touchdown passes you cant blame that game on taylor martinez
@148sharp very true. it was dissapointing cause that was the first UN game i'd seen all year so i was pretty pumped to see martinez. Pelini screwed up by taking him out in my opinion. He' s your guy. You don't pull him, that just kinda sends the wrong message. He's definitely got a future though.
@ejvols4 oh yea no doubt that he has a future. Pelini probably shouldnt have pulled Taylor Martinez but the only thing we can focus on now is beating beating mizzou to get back in the top 10.
@ejvols4 Yeah I think there is a curse with Texas. Even in 1999 Nebraska got beat by a weak Texas team and ended our chances of going to the national championship. Because we ended up beating them later in the year in the big 12 championship.
@Mr420woo It's the same with UT and Florida. Gah they beat us every damn year (not a surprise this year cause we suck for real). But we almost always are playing catch up cause after three games we always have a loss.
@ejvols4 The Texas game was a fluke. Taylor Martinez passed for 5 touchdowns and 313 passing yards on Okie State and rushed for 112 yards. Wanna take back ur comment?
2001 hurricanes would destroy them. Not even close.
jonothan vilma, ken dorsey, najeh davenport, frank gore, clinton portis, andre johnson, jeremy shockey, kellen winslow, ed reed and sean taylor. Get real. Im not a canes fan, but they're easily the best team ever.
@mrisaac1995 1995 nebraska > 2001 miami did you even see 95 huskers play? I think miami would get tired after LP and frazier having over 300 yards rushing in the 1st half
ima nebraska fan but honestly dont diss our team like that we had the best team of the 90's tho so fuck off herby ur ohio state bias ass gna get throwed in lincoln next year
kirk has to be the biggest nebraska hater of all time...i personally hate the guy and think he's a fucking idiot...once he finally pulls the dick out of his ass and realizes he sucked as a player and is never right about anything, he might actually one day be a good commentator...as for the greatest team all time, its impossible to know which team is better unless they played each other, and that will obviously never happen...but '95 Neb was a pretty awesome team regardless...go big red!! :)
kirk you are mad OSU wasnt the best team ever and they will never be the best team ever stop your bitching shut up and GO BIG RED BEAT THE OSU NEXT YEAR AND THE BIG TEN SHOW OSU HOW TO RUN THE BALLL AND PLAY REAL FOOOTBALLL
The 2001 Miami team was unbelievable. If you have the time just look at their roster. Every position was loaded with talent. Andre Johnson, Clinton Portis, Frank Gore (THE BACKUP), Jonathan Vilma, Ed Reed, Jeremy Shockey, Najeh Davenport, Bryant Mckinnie, Philip Buchanon, etc, etc,
Now look at the Nebraska squad.
I'm not seeing anything that's even comparable to that 2001 Hurricanes squad.
@ejvols4 Im sorry man but 1995 nebraska would demolish 2001 miami like nothing. look up the 1996 fiesta bowl where nebraska beat florida 62-24. and 1995 florida could put a whippin on 2001 miami
@Mr420woo 95 Huskers were huge. They just lined up and were just more physical than everyone they played. THat being said, the 2001 Miami team just has WAY too much talent on the team to get dominated by them. Maybe 95 would win, but I think its absolutely ridiculous when people get on here saying that 95 would destroy every team brought up. If i were betting though, i'd put money on 2001 Miami.
Actually Kirk, the 1971 Nebraska team passed for a Conference leading 179 yards per game while running for 258 yards per game. Yes...we threw the ball.
wait i understand that. but all that speed from miami would have given fits to the 95 huskers and the 71 huskers. come on man lou holtz and lee corso are the biggest miami haters ever and everyone knows it. you cant think that the athletes from the 70's were as good as the ones from the 01 canes but you are absolutely wrong
@TheRiverdog14 That's funny because Lou Holtz and Lee Corso are the village idiots of ESPN analysts. Lee Corso is a clown and Holtz is senile.
Honestly, Herbstreit is right about this one. I mean, you can win the argument with the simple fact that athletic ability increases with time. That's why you see Olympic records being shattered all the time. Everything else aside, the 2010 Alabama team is probably the best team ever based on that alone.
The 04' USC and 01" Miami team were the best? ROFLMAO! One, Auburn 04' was a better team than USC. 01' Miami wasn't jack. No doubt about it, the 95' Husker team was the best team ever in College football.
I bleed red through & through, but as I try not get too nostalgic about how good we (NU) were, I do feel it's my duty to post some stats for those who are confused.
1) No other National Champion can boast wins over 4 other AP Top 10 finishers.
2) Nebraska beat those four teams by a combined score of 196-73,
3) Kansas State had statistically the best defense in the country, & got destroyed.
Oregon and Colorado were robbed in 2001 and you can't deny that.

Football is a big momentum game, and NU stole it from UF that day...
sribble1 6 months ago
To summarize: the Big 8 was the best conference that year. 4 teams in the top 10 with each losing to Nebraska and beating each other. Games were over in the 3rd...stats could have been worse for opponents. And stats don't tell the whole story. NU had trouble on the ground against 4 opponents at least in '95. Florida had some chances to keep it close. Hilliard alligator armed at least 3 big throws from Danny. And, that FLA team was pretty good winning it the next year.
sribble1 7 months ago
I've watched that game 12 times (have it on dvd), it was bad for Florida, but they had chances to keep it close
sribble1 7 months ago
3rd stringers are running around
sribble1 7 months ago
I am a die hard Nebraska fan and have been watching them faithfully since 1988.
I have watched more videos and read more articles on them. Many of the latter do not know what they are talking about. Here are my thoughts on the '95 team:
1. There were games they had trouble moving the ball. The first half against Oklahoma was rough. The Wazzu game was tough to move the ball on them. Colorado relegated NU to a lot of passing. Kansas also played well defensively -'95 Nebraska struggled some

Nebraska also knelt on the 1 yard line as time expired.
acrnkovich31 8 months ago
'95 Nebraska had no non-conference opponents (none were ranked), Oklahoma was 2-5 that season in the conference (down big time), and Texas wasn't in the league. They skated to the championship beating the likes of Kansas, Missouri, etc... Best team ever? What a joke.
scarletshrapnel 9 months ago
@scarletshrapnel
They destroyed four ranked teams that year, including #2 Florida 62-24.....setting the record for largest margin of victory and most rush yards.
gif4445 9 months ago
@scarletshrapnel Kansas State FINISHED #8 (final score 49-25), Kansas finished #10 (final score 41-3), Colorado FINISHED #5 (Final score 44-21). Washington State gave up 428 RUSH yards to Nebraska. Over the entire season WSU gave up an average of 162.4 rush yards/game. Your COMMENT is a joke.
acrnkovich31 9 months ago
@scarletshrapnel The lowest amount of points they scored in a game was 35. They played three top ten teams toward the end of the regular season and beat each of them by more than 20 points. And they put up over 60 points four times in the season, including a 62-24 dismantling of the #2 team in the nation, Florida. They had third-string players in for almost the entire fourth quarter of the national championship for crying out loud!

DwideShrude64 1 year ago
Just google "best college football team ever" and it should be the 5th link. It's on a website called associatedcontent
DwideShrude64 1 year ago
im sorry they are all forgetting about the 97 michigan team who had arguablly the best defense that ever stepped on the field allowed an average of only 43 yds rushing a game
sjh200765 1 year ago
It's not about how those teams would play today's teams, that's an unfair comparison. It's two totally different styles of football. It's about what those teams did IN THEIR TIME. The '71 Cornhuskers held their opponents to an average 7 points a game. The '95 Cornhuskers completely smothered every team they played, the closest score was 35-21. Those were the two greatest football teams ever.
From an Arkansas fan who has enough sense to see the obvious, unlike Herbie.

Don't forget that U$C of 2004 never even played the second best team that year, that being an undefeated Auburn team out of the SEC. Ya the same SEC that has produced the last 5 national titles. By the way would love to put that 95 Nebraska team against the 2004 U$C team and watch the O Line for Nebraska wear the hell out of U$C.

woodAfrica....I'm glad you're defending the Huskers, but Tom Osborne did not create the spread offense in 71. He wasn't even the head coach. If anyone did it was Bob Devaney cuz he was the coach at the time.
subwayg16 1 year ago
@subwayg16 You're half right Deveney was the head coach but Osborne was the offensive coordinator who revamped offense with a balanced attack operated from the I formation. The spread offence has been used for a long long time. TCU used it in the 1950s.
willmickel71 1 year ago
1971 Nebraska did not run the option. They didn't start running the option until the early 80's with Turner Gill. 71 Nebraska threw the ball out of the I-form and Tagge went to the NFL as a passing quarterback.
DruDP 1 year ago
now as someone who knows nebraska football the 71 team ran what we know today as the spead offense. thats right tom osborne created the spead offense.
woodAfrica2010 1 year ago
@woodAfrica2010 Tom Osborne wasn't the coach in 71 so he couldn't have come up with the spread. He was just an assistant. Devaney was pry the one to come up with it if it did in fact start at Nebraska.

@ejvols4 actually taylor martinez can throw they just have sucky wide recievers that game martinez threw some great passes he threw some bad ones too. but the point is, is that they dropped 8 passes 4 were touchdown passes you cant blame that game on taylor martinez

I'm a Vol fan and I think 01 Miami is better....

@Mr420woo 95 Huskers were huge. They just lined up and were just more physical than everyone they played. THat being said, the 2001 Miami team just has WAY too much talent on the team to get dominated by them.
