  • The last part with Penelope's genius line is brilliant!

  • Fay Baintier looked oriental. Theresa Wright was so...i don't know what the word is considering she's like 90 now...I would say beautiful/hot

  • Marvelous video! My favorites are Kim Hunter, Eva Marie Saint, Sandy Dennis and Geena Davis. I can't picture anyone cast in their magnificent roles.

  • great video

  • I'm surprised nobody has mentioned anything about the fix 1993 Oscars when Marisa Tomei won ahead of the 4 much better British actresses

  • @gazzpash thats because she didnt win ahead of the 4 much better actresses... Marisa was the best!

  • whre is halle berry

  • @alberthurt1 IT's listed supporting actress not Lead actress, Halle won the Oscar for Lead not supporting.

  • What is the 1st song of this video? not the partnership one but the song for the first actresses?!? it is beautiful and I have been serching for it but don't know where or what to look for! someone help me!

  • @theflecker The very first song played is from the score to the movie Sneakers.

  • and monique ???????????

  • and monique

  • Um, could we just pretend that there was a tie between Abigail Breslin and Adriana Barraza in 2006 for the award?

  • goldie hawn was amazing!

  • Signifcances- Hattie McDaniel- first black person to win an oscar

Miyoshi Umeki- first asian and still the only asian to win an oscar for acting

Patty Duke- first minor to win an oscar

Tatum O'Neal- youngest person to win an oscar still to date

Beatrice Straight- person with the lease amount of screen time in a movie to win an oscar (5 minutes)

Anna Paquin- second youngest person to win an oscar

    :D

  • who's the young actress at 1:19 ??

    plz

  • Comment removed

  • @fandejackson That actress is Patty Duke. She played Hellen Keller in The Miracle Worker. She was the first person under the age of 18 to win an academy award. She did an amazing job. Her co-star, Anne Bancroft, won best actress.

  • @fandejackson Patty Duke for the Miracle Worker

  • LOL! Seriously loved Vicky Cristi Barcelona.

  • HOLY SHIT! Anne Baxter was HOT!

  • PERVERT!

  • Add Monique to the list I'd love to see her:)

  • I would like the names of the actresses. For about the first half, I have no idea who these women are.

  • Find them yourself.

  • @TheOscarFiles I shouldn't have to. You should provide them.

  • Lazy....

  • I'm just asking, but are your years in the description off a litte? I thought Penelope Cruz won in 2009?

  • It's not off. Vicky Christina Barcelona is a 2008 film, NOT 2009.

  • Thanks. I was thinkin of the showing of the awards, not the film itself. thanks alot! ^-^

  • Mo'nique was awesome. Will see.....

  • I loved it, but it seemed to get rushed with the last few.

I agree though, I think Mo'nique will be added to this list for Precious.

  • Great!

  • Saw Precious last night.... Mo'Nique will likely be winning BSA this year. I also wouldn't mind Gabby Sidibe winning best actress. They were both incredible.

  • THANK YOU!

Glad to finally see someone who agrees with Mo'Nique winning.

  • @DMProductionss U were right, she did win BSA

  • why is there so much hateful comments.

  • What piece of music is this??

    it´s soo beautiful :)

  • Soundtrack from "A Beautiful Mind"

  • @oscarestefano from 1:37 to the end is from "Shakespeare in Love". It's called "The Beginning of the Partnership" on the soundtrack.

  • @musicaltheatergeek79 On the - A Beautiful Mind- soundtrack

  • No, Patty Duke is the best winner.

  • Penelope Cruz was wonderful!

  • Uh, no.

  • Congratulations on being a dumbass!!

  • You are the biggest IDIOT on Youtube. Please go to film school and quit being a black idiot.

    Ta ta.

  • Hahaha, stay in school, DUMBASS.

  • You're a dumbass.

  • I thought she was nom. worthy. Didn't deserve a win.

  • Uhhhhhh...wrong

BSActress of 2006....based on the year it was released dumbass.... was cate Blanchett in Notes on a Scandal....

Far better than Kikuchi...aswell as Hudson ... Breslin and Barrazza were pretty good...but CB was the best

  • I can understand the love for Kikuchi, but I really think Catherine O'Hara, of For You Consideration, deserved that trophy. Out of the nominees I'd side with Adriana Barraza.

  • You should also make montages for Lead Actor, Lead Actress, and Supporting Actor.

  • Um.. First of all Babel is a 2006 film NOT 2007. Secondly Jennifer Hudson deserved her Oscar.

  • Could you be anymore stupid? Some fatass who can sing wins an Oscar...what sounds wrong with the sentence? She can SING, NOT ACT. Plus, she's already got the Oscar curse.

  • if the oscars go by the mentality that one great song is equivalent to an oscar, then they should of awarded queen latifah the oscar back in 2002 cuz she can sing and she also acted very decently in chicago.

  • Yeah, right.

  • Rinko was amazing!

  • Abigail Breslin is.

  • y Abigail?

i though Blanchett in Notes.. was the best by a mile....Breslin probably third

  • Comment removed

  • Jennifer Hudson is the WORST winner EVER....

  • @LickMyCuntMoFo i wouldn't say 'worst', but cate blanchett should have won that year for 'note's on a scandal'

  • that was an awesome video - I really loved the closing sentence!

  • this video was excellent. you got the moments that most of these actresses won there oscars for really. plus i love shirley jones llaugh on elmer gantry, classic. the only negative bout this video is that jennifer hudson has to be on it, how bout we pretend abigail breslin won it or rinko or adrianna

  • hmm

What do people think about Beatrice Straight winning for 'Network' in '76?

Personally I thought it was a brilliant performance that absolutely breaks the audiences' hearts...

  • I thought it was great, but people got mad that she won because she role was very small..... and you know what I say... SO WHAT....it WAS long enough, and it was DAM GOOD. What do you think ??

  • She deserved her Oscar.

  • Jennifer Hudson was so fucking awful.

  • She was a scene-stealer. She gives one of the best musical performances of the decade. Totally deserved the Oscar.

  • She can sing, even though she's an American Idol LOSER, and she CAN NOT act for her life.

She needs to just retire, or give her Oscar to Breslin or Kickuchi.

  • @KadieMayBitch disagree very much

  • This was SO well done!!!

  • 0:51 , Masterpiece!!!!!!!

  • Anyone have any predictions for next year?

I'm predicting Monique winning for Precious.

  • Really? The one from "Phat Girlz"?

  • LOL! Yes.

  • Yeah I could see that. Kind of like Queen Latifah - showing natural dramatic acting ability, without shedding her street-smart style.

  • I wish Queen Latifah would do more drama, instead of her 2 dime "comedy" films.

  • I know! She's very talented, and actually can act. I hate how they can give Jennifer Hudson a Oscar, but not Latifah. Damn.

Even though her part was small in "Chicago" was small, i'm still glad she was nominated. By the way, what's your ranking for 2002?

  • 2002 is easy!

    Streep/Moore (they both were excellent)

    Latifah

    Bates

    Zeta Jones

  • You know, I can't decide over Streep or Moore either for the top spot!

Streep and Cooper were amazing together, creating a wierd, but true love affair.

Moore gave the best performance of the film, and was incredibly heartbreaking. A very subtle, and nuanced performance.

    I can't wait until StinkyLulu does 2002!

  • Me too!!

I'm somewhat thinkng Meryl will win a make-up Oscar this year for Julie and Julia....so far, the competition is extremely weak.

  • People have been saying Julieanne Moore has the "Glenn Close" career; well respected actress gets a couple Oscar nominations, then her career kind of fades, and she never wins. I really hope that doesn't happen to Julianne.

  • I was kinding hopeing Blindness would be her ticket to the Oscars, but turns out, it wasn't a good movie lol

  • So far? We're only halfway through the year. The big Oscar films don't start coming out 'til late fall.

  • This year is going to beyond SUCKY.

I expect the horrible musical Nine, to win Best Picture.

  • Out of two just these two Supporting Actress nominees in 1945, which would you have picked for the win?

    Ann Blyth OR Eve Arden?

  • Ann Blyth

  • Fantastic!

  • this is a direct message to academy award guy: hi dude when exactly are you gonna upload your new videos with the other categories?? are you really preparing them?? because you have a lot of subscribers and you should please them with the videos you said you would post, don't you think? well I hope you do it very soon and very nice video the one with the supporting actress montage!

  • Yes, I am planning that, it's just that is not that easy. I don't like to upload videos with bad quality, or bad edited. I try to have quality videos. Now I am preparing The Supporting Actress montage, of the winning moments. While watching and getting the films I need for the Supporting Actor, montages. By the way, does anyy of you has The Subject Was Roses?

  • Nice job. How did you get these clips??

  • Can't wait to see the others!!

  • no for penelope :D

  • Kim Basinger sure as hell didn't deserve to win over Gloria Stuart. Neither did Anne Revere over Eve Arden!

  • glenn close should have won 82 for "the worls according to garp"!

jessica lange is a great actress, but was much better in other films...

  • This is a fantastic montage of talent. Worthy of being showcased of The Academy Awards broadcast. Thanks. I really enjoyed it.

  • Uh, you've gotten must of these WRONG:

Patty Duke DESERVED her Oscar in 1962

Anna Paquin DESERVED her Oscar in 1993

Juliette Binoche DESERVED her Oscar in 1996

Judi Dench DESERVED her Oscar in 1998

Marcia Gay Harden DESERVED her Oscar in 2000

So, maybe you need to sat your mind straight.

  • Judi Dench ten minute performance in Shakespeare In Love!!!!!!! Judi was far more better in Chocolat which she should have won in 2000.

  • NO, Marcia Gay Harden deserved it in 2000. And Judi gave a great Supporting performance, hint why she won.

  • What does screen time have to do with the quality of the performance? That's just a cop-out. Brad Pitt had nearly three hours in Benjamin Button and did nothing with it. Bea Straight and Judi Dench had mere minutes and made the most of them. Dench was alright in Chocolat, but in that year she shouldn't have made the top 5. I like Bacall too, but it was nice for them to avoid a sympathy vote for once.

  • Why are you comparing her performances? They're in different years! She deserved for oscar for Shakespeare and she should have won best actress anyway the year before.

  • To all of you who sent me messages. I am preparing new videos. I did this one first, because I have all the videos from my old channel... I am preparing a Best Supporting Actress montage with the winning moments. After that I am also preparing and trying to get the Supporting Actor montage, and then the Supporting Actor winning moments montage. And the same for Actress and Actor...

    Thanks for all the support...

  • To all of you people who like my channel. I have one confession. I am the person behind the SuppActress original channel. This SuppActress 2 is not me. YouTube deleted it. I just wanted to let you know guys, that I am not him or her.

  • To see all the Supporting Actress performances, go to my channel!!!

  • "but neither one of you vote in the Actor's Branch of the Academy Of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences, and neither of you understand actors or acting at all." I think Penelope was excellent and deserving of the acclaim, but that is a stupid, stupid remark. I rarely agree with anything LickMyCuntMoFo posts, but to hold up the academy as some sort of ultimate arbiter of cinematic worth is idiotic. While I agree with their decision to honor Penelope, this video contains some crappy performances.

  • you are entitled to your opinion, however the Academy doesn't vote based on the populace's opinion, but theirs and the individual branches in each category who determine the nominations and the winners

  • I disagree with you outinsider....The Return of The King may not have won if it hadn't been a big box office hit, same thing goes for Jennifer Hudson's win.

These things today are entirely political.

  • Oh my lord....you just said JENNIFER HUDSON deserved her Oscar.

She won, because she was an underdog, or using my own word, loser, and the award shows thought he, let's change it up and give her all these awards.

She's arguebly the worst winner in any of the categories.

  • outinsider, i've been a film student for 4 years, that doesn't mean I can't judge acting.

  • No, Hudson did not deserve her Oscar.

  • "And a small group of amateur film students and their massive egos"

    What was that about egos?

  • I love the last clip of Penelope Cruz in VCB. Because, all these performances are not only a sign of talent, but genius. Total genius.

  • Yes...but too bad Peneople ACTUALLY WON. The fact is, she's terrible.

  • I think you mean to say " In my opinion" if you are capable of factually saying those three words to define your opinion/

  • correction: actually saying those three words

  • Well, sorry to sound like such a bitch. So, do you actually think Cruz deserved it?

  • There must have been something about her performance that made the Actor's Branch vote so strongly for her.

  • I've heard rumors she slept with Weinstein for vote blocking.

  • well, one, that's a rumor, which actually makes it uncredibile. Secondly, that is a biased low expectation of the artist and her craft. Thirdly, in regards to her craft, as an actor looking at another actor's performance, does she fulfill what a supporting performer is supposed to do in the medium? You have to approach it like an actor, not from a discredible press venue. Hedda Hopper may have appeared in a couple Hollywood movies, but that doesn't give her cred to the profession.

  • I think she's good when she's doing things in Spanish....I can barely even understand her when she's speaking English. And honestly, I really didn't like Vicky Christina Barcelona...she could have made much more of an impact in her role, I just didn't think she did.

I can understand why Viola didn't win, because no one reallys knows her...

  • Well, you are entitled to your opinions, but I do have a question for you. More like questions. One: if she is a supporting character and depending on the script, how much more of an impact should she have made with less than 40 minutes of screentime? Two: It takes a great actress to steal away the carpet from a leading star, to make people care more for her than her leading players. Did she steal away the carpet from Scarlett and Javier? Three: Does her character drive the picture?

  • cont'd: I mean, if the movie sucked, but her characterization is the only thing that keeps people interested, then that's something. A movie can be crap but one character can still keep you interested. Did she keep you interested?

  • In your opinion, what should be the fulfillment or what do you think a supporting preformer is supposed to do in the medium?

  • Well, my smartass answer is based on my questions, what do you think? But, I'll list them.

A supporting player must fulfill a majority of these qualities: The performer must have made a considerable impact on the film given their limited screentime; The performer must steal away the interest that would go to the leading roles on them. The performer must drive the character they are portraying so well that it makes the film worth something contd

  • A good sign of a great supporting player is when the supporting player sizes up the lead in some effective way by their portrayal, and they are right about their observations. They are so right you depend on them in a way. Of course, that standard comes and goes nowadays, but that defines the classic Oscar deserved performances like Alice Brady in In Old Chicago, Fay Bainter in Jezebel, Hattie McDaniel in Gone With The Wind, Ma Joad in The Grapes Of Wrath, and Mary Astor in The Great Lie.

  • There is another good sign too, when an actor's portrayal just gets under your skin, and you enjoy it even if the character is unfavorable- like Gale Sondergaard in Anthony Adverse, Shirley Jones in Elmer Gantry, Angelina Jolie in Girl, Interrupted, and most recently, Tilda Swinton in Michael Clayton.

  • To basically sum it up, Peneople didn't do anything except scream Spanish and kiss a woman. PERIOD

  • Do you always analyze performances based on their surface, or have you actually explored depth in your analyses? I would think someone so *educated* in film would understand how important depth is to an actor.

  • If you where trying to be sarcastic, the joke is on you, motherfucker. For one of my acting classes, we actually watched Vicky Christina Barcelona, and, we had to find Cruz's depth. Sorry! This could have been one great performance, but the movie was AWFUL, and Cruz was no better.

  • Actually I was trying to be nice. G-d you are such a baby!

  • A smart, educated baby.

  • listening and memorizing Herle Haggard at teh age of 3 doesn't make you smart or educated. And getting into a pre-pubscent tiff simply because I'm questioning your intellect and you don't think I should( which isn't much of a sign of intelligence as it is a more of a sign of a four year old who always got candy and throws a tantrum when no one will give him any).

  • Listen, I'm happy with me life, and probably smarter than you in many areas. So, just drop it.

  • Whatever helps you sleep at night. To me and few other people on here, you are just compensating for your lack of cocksmanship.

  • Refer to my screename.

  • Your screenname only amplifies my point.

  • That is your opinion, that is his opinion, but neither one of you vote in the Actor's Branch of the Academy Of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences, and neither of you understand actors or acting at all. You may think you know, but you know jack shit.

  • I don't put Jennifer Hudson with Dolly Parton and Steve Carrell, she has more talent than those two combined, not to mention, better screen presence.

  • It's not the fucking People's Choice Awards. and why are you channeling your complaints towards LickMyCuntMoFo onto me?

  • Comment removed

  • you don't see how similar you and him sound with your "arguments?"

  • Comment removed

  • It is a requirement that every Academy member see all the movies of the year so that they could make the nominations and determine the winners. I think in regards to industry politics versus global politics, it does tend to go towards the other one but that doesn't demean the value of the work. I don't think sentimentality plays a role in determining winners at all.

  • Also, I'm not judging you for thinking like that amateur, but I am saying that a little more education and less biased opinions might help you understand more about the Oscars.

  • "but theirs and the individual branches in each category who determine the nominations and the winners"

Yes, and it is their choices that we are critiquing.

  • And herein lies the difference. The public doesn't trust that actors don't know enough of their craft to recognize great performances that the public adores. If the Academy was meant to serve the public in their recognition, the Oscars and the People's Choice would be very similar and appease to the public's opinions on who should be recognized. But, no , it falls back to the actor, who I believe, knows well their craft to determine who deserves real recognition and who doesn't.

  • "The public doesn't trust that actors don't know enough of their craft to recognize great performances that the public adores."

I am not on the "the Academy is out-of-touch with the public" bandwagon. I wish they were more out of touch and occasionally voted for something outside of their comfort zone.

"I don't think sentimentality plays a role in determining winners at all."

How can you look at this list (or any other of the categories) and tell me that sentiment has no role?

  • I'm not saying that the Academy IS out of touch with the public, but they shouldn't accommodate themselves to please the public with their choice of winners. The Oscars are no different from any other public award ceremony, peers recognizing peers for their achievements. But, since the Academy does want to maintain influence, it does often nominate performers that the public likes to keep us interested.

  • Also, I might add that it really isn't about THEIR comfort zone, but yours in that respect. The Academy often recognized unrecognized performances by the public to question the PUBLIC's comfort zone and hope the public can inquire the reasons why they chose what they chose. To answer your question, sentiment has no role because it is not about winning sentiment, it is about excellence in their craft and the hard work the performers have taken in their craft.

  • Usually, the Academy recognizes performances the public does not recognize because they know the performers have challenged themselves beyond their comfort zone. The public doesn't recognize this because the public establishes the comfort zone. Sure, some of the winners are predictable in some years, but all in all, sentiment towards their profession drives their decisions, not sentiment toward their peers.

  • "Usually, the Academy recognizes performances the public does not recognize because they know the performers have challenged themselves beyond their comfort zone."

By comfort zone, I was referring to their preferred stock characters and genres: biopics, Holocaust dramas, drug addicts, etc.

I have no doubt that actors are best at judging their fellow artists. The problem is that when it comes to actual awards consideration, they pick the same kind of roles every year.

  • well, but that;s the thing though. Not every biopic wins an Oscar, not every Holocaust movie wins an Oscar, not every story of a drug addict wins an Oscar. The myths surrounding these conventions and how they are recognized are only just myths. I do think, however, that producers are behind a lot of Hollywood movies and they establish the conventions for the actor to challenge in their performances. The only way to change up the comfort zone established is to bring something new to the table...
