Hi I'm new to warhammer 40K and I'm ordering stuff for Christmas I love so far the Blood Angels, but what are the key things you would want to have in an blood angels army.
@Jawaballs How much would it cost to have those Rhinos and Baal Predators replicated as closely as possible, although I would want the wings and blood drop to be as symmetrical as possible and I would also want the Baal Predator in question to include the Marine aboard it with the lance. I would be willing to pay for the Warhammer Fantasy kit it comes with if neccesary.

If I had to pick a number to even begin estimating a value, I would say 20 hours at 20 dollars an hour... 400.00 minimum. I could probably knock it down a bit, but I can't see myself painting that again in less than 10-15 hours. The checkers alone took 3 or 4 hours to do! Email me at hotmail if you want to talk further.

how come i never see any regular dreadnoughts in a blood angels army?? i know theyre allowed in the BA codex so why not? are they useless in this kinda army?
Obviously I guess that the hobby can rarely be "profitable" but would you say the enourmous costs you clearly bear are at least lessened by your video income?
Between winning loot at tournaments and selling some stuff I have enough to pay for travel and supplies and buy the wife goodies to make up for spending days at a time playing games. I have managed to achieve a level where my hobby supports itself. Which I suppose is all we can ask for!

@Tomasdabest I have won quite a few "Best Painted". The problem now is that most of the places I go to for tournaments I go to all the time. you could use a airbrush or you could use jawas technique but i like the army painter red primer then highlight. much faster+no brush strokes+ looks really nice the only downside is that if you overspray your screwed
I get that question a lot. Prime white, then use a tank brush with slightly watered down blood red. The secret is to only do one or two strokes, and never do a back stroke with the brush. Let it dry, then do it again a few more times.
Fists are an example where fluff does not quite translate well into game mechanics. There really is little reason to take Lysander compared to some of the other more powerful characters. He is good, but from a competitive army point of view, more guys take Vulcan and a couple other guys. Stubborn is great for assaulty armies with large squads. So maybe two tacticals, 3 assault, and some termies coming out of a land raider with Lysander and a chaplain?

Yes... BA are the Only 40K army with Baal Preds with Overcharged Engines, But regular SM armys can now choose Assault Cannons on the Razor Back which BA can't ... 8(
Yes... Assault Marines in BA are troop choice but not the Veteran Assault marines, there Elites.

My army, without the hand painting, would still be pretty steep, about 1400 plus the cost of models. I charge 20 bucks an hour, and it takes me no less then an hour to paint each infantry model.

Hey, I have 2 dreads in my spacewolves army ( 1 ven with assault cannon and one normal with multi melta) and I was thinking of keeping them in cover behind my two landraiders( which are moving up anyways) until i get them close enough for close combat. Do you think this would work well or should i just get drop pods and forget about this whole idea? thanks, Mark

The only thing i dont like is the over the top highlighting on the black and yellow checkers on the vehicles and pods... other than that pretty dam cool.
In all honestly the army looks great Except the tactical squads the painting looks to red in comparison to your vehicles. especially the awesome banner seems to be held by a models that just looks flat and unfinished. It's to much red without contrast or shadow.
the rest of the army however is stunning I've seen the dreadnoughts and vehicles/pods which looks stunning. so hopefully all of the freehands on those will still win you best painted.
You are seeing some of the problems with my army. half of those tacticals were a thrown together rush job, and the other haf were painted 2 years ago! My painting has improved since i painted those boys. In april I will start fresh. :)
@jawaballs looking forward to that jawwa, in all honoustly it let's the army down as a whole since it's so different. I have to say it's only the infantary though the vehicles still look very coherent (the checkers really help :) ). Should be instant best painted when you get this sorted.

I forgot they had open gaming, I would have gone! Though I bet most of the guys were Fantasy players... they have like 3x the players! I'm pretty psyched. Last year was a great event. It was where I realized I could actually compete at this game, both painting and playing. (I took 6th and was in position to win it all.) :)

Man the tournaments must play a lot differently over there(not bashing, just making a point), here in Australia 3 drop pod dreadies is just throwing 6 KP's onto your opponents score, never seen 3 go more than 2 turns even all dropped at once, same goes for pretty much anything deep striking or fast moving like bikes, if you don't totally hide the bikes that is.
You could probably get away with a dual warboss dual nob biker units(plus the other 1000 points :P) army quite easily over there.
Not that wonderful, melta weapons needs to roll a 1 on the reroll to not remove a weapon, 3+ pretty much ruins a CC dread.
American gamers don't seem to be totally melta/flamer obsessed so a lot of the harder hitting tactics that rely on close assault drops are still viable.
Assault vehicle rushes are all the rage here, move up 6", take the incoming fire, then charge next turn, rinse repeat for almost every army, you guys have far more variety in forces from what I see.
jawaballs i don't see Corbulo, and that shocked me in surprise, your lists usually incoporate a special character. I actually like these lists better, not rellying on a special character. Good luck on the tournament and congrats on being a father :)
I have written droves on the subject on my blog. But the short of it is that this list needs leadership 10 more then furious charge. Corbs didnt cut it, and with him lacking a power weapon, he is a liability. I need every model pulling their weight in this list. So I needed a HQ with a melta shot and a PW. Dont worry, at a 1850 tournament next month I am using Corbs.
Well, last tournament I went to, I won... it was a 2k point tournament, so I added a Baal and 2 more bikes. In that one I managed to capture 4 of the 5 objectives in a 5 objective game... victory. Squads can capture more then one objective, and tactical squads can combat squad. So if I need them, I actually have 4 troops choices. But what it comes down to is not how many objectives you own, but how many of his you contest. If you own one, but contest 4 others... you win.
@jawaballs I was thinking in more of terms or survivability. If you split them into combat squads you only have to suffere two wounds before you have to start taking tests. But I'm sure you can pull it off.
You are right, if some one is determined to wipe out one of my 5 man squads, they sure can... but to do so will usually mean ignoring one of my dreads or preds... not smart. Oddly, I rarely lose even one...
@jawaballs I find dread normally get alot of heat thrown at them, and the Av12 unfortunatley can't handle to much of the heavy stuff. Although the drop pods 'ought to fix that problem. Just be careful of the dual wielding Melta Wolves. So...Many...Meltas.
I am not a fan of the checkers though; I have been watching you develop them and they do bring unity I agree, but, to be brutally honest, they look like tetris stones and really don't have any place on hardware of that calibre.

I used a cork bulletin board from staples and some plastic texture sheet from plastruct. The levels were just sheets of foamboard. Pretty simple!

yes assault are troops for BA. If you want assault marines, play blood angels but paint them however you want.

Hey, I have 2 dreads in my spacewolves army ( 1 ven with assault cannon and one normal with multi melta) and I was thinking of keeping them in cover behind my two landraiders( which are moving up anyways) until i get them close enough for close combat. Do you think this would work well or should i just get drop pods and forget about this whole idea? thanks, Mark

The only thing i dont like is the over the top highlighting on the black and yellow checkers on the vehicles and pods... other than that pretty dam cool.

In all honestly the army looks great Except the tactical squads the painting looks to red in comparison to your vehicles. especially the awesome banner seems to be held by a models that just looks flat and unfinished. It's to much red without contrast or shadow.
the rest of the army however is stunning I've seen the dreadnoughts and vehicles/pods which looks stunning. so hopefully all of the freehands on those will still win you best painted.

You are seeing some of the problems with my army. half of those tacticals were a thrown together rush job, and the other haf were painted 2 years ago! My painting has improved since i painted those boys. In april I will start fresh. :)

@jawaballs looking forward to that jawwa, in all honoustly it let's the army down as a whole since it's so different. I have to say it's only the infantary though the vehicles still look very coherent (the checkers really help :) ). Should be instant best painted when you get this sorted.

I forgot they had open gaming, I would have gone! Though I bet most of the guys were Fantasy players... they have like 3x the players! I'm pretty psyched. Last year was a great event. It was where I realized I could actually compete at this game, both painting and playing. (I took 6th and was in position to win it all.) :)

Man the tournaments must play a lot differently over there(not bashing, just making a point), here in Australia 3 drop pod dreadies is just throwing 6 KP's onto your opponents score, never seen 3 go more than 2 turns even all dropped at once, same goes for pretty much anything deep striking or fast moving like bikes, if you don't totally hide the bikes that is.
You could probably get away with a dual warboss dual nob biker units(plus the other 1000 points :P) army quite easily over there.

Not that wonderful, melta weapons needs to roll a 1 on the reroll to not remove a weapon, 3+ pretty much ruins a CC dread.
American gamers don't seem to be totally melta/flamer obsessed so a lot of the harder hitting tactics that rely on close assault drops are still viable.
Assault vehicle rushes are all the rage here, move up 6", take the incoming fire, then charge next turn, rinse repeat for almost every army, you guys have far more variety in forces from what I see.

jawaballs i don't see Corbulo, and that shocked me in surprise, your lists usually incoporate a special character. I actually like these lists better, not rellying on a special character. Good luck on the tournament and congrats on being a father :)

I have written droves on the subject on my blog. But the short of it is that this list needs leadership 10 more then furious charge. Corbs didnt cut it, and with him lacking a power weapon, he is a liability. I need every model pulling their weight in this list. So I needed a HQ with a melta shot and a PW. Dont worry, at a 1850 tournament next month I am using Corbs.

Well, last tournament I went to, I won... it was a 2k point tournament, so I added a Baal and 2 more bikes. In that one I managed to capture 4 of the 5 objectives in a 5 objective game... victory. Squads can capture more then one objective, and tactical squads can combat squad. So if I need them, I actually have 4 troops choices. But what it comes down to is not how many objectives you own, but how many of his you contest. If you own one, but contest 4 others... you win.

@jawaballs I was thinking in more of terms or survivability. If you split them into combat squads you only have to suffere two wounds before you have to start taking tests. But I'm sure you can pull it off.

You are right, if some one is determined to wipe out one of my 5 man squads, they sure can... but to do so will usually mean ignoring one of my dreads or preds... not smart. Oddly, I rarely lose even one...

@jawaballs I find dread normally get alot of heat thrown at them, and the Av12 unfortunatley can't handle to much of the heavy stuff. Although the drop pods 'ought to fix that problem. Just be careful of the dual wielding Melta Wolves. So...Many...Meltas.

I am not a fan of the checkers though; I have been watching you develop them and they do bring unity I agree, but, to be brutally honest, they look like tetris stones and really don't have any place on hardware of that calibre.
